I'm rooting for all you guys! I had every intention of joining the underdogs until my MCAT made me an "average" applicant.
 
underdog here. 3.3 cGPA, 2.93 sGPA, and 29 (9-9-11). It confuses me to this day. but my AACOM and AMCAS sGPA was the same. Look forward to going through this with you guys!

Have you submitted yet? We have similar numbers. My sgpa is slightly above 3.0 though.

I have submitted all of my DO secondaries in the last few days with the exception of NJ DO
 
Hoping for an interview soon! but losing hope🙁 23mcat 6PS9V8BS with a 3.86 overall gpa and a 3.78 science gpa. I was complete in the middle of June to most of my schools! waiting is terrible!
 
Just got an invite for an interview for LECOM- Seton Hill. My stats: 3.2c/2.9s/30 (9, 10, 11). I swear I was so happy, I could've cried. We got this, underdogs =)

Got my first acceptance today. I was very ecstatic. I am hoping to get a couple more, but I will not complain if I only get just this one. (LECOM Seton Hill)

I really enjoyed my interview, and from what I saw it looks like a great place despite not having a cadaver lab. I know certain people have there problem with the school, but they have great results. I would recommend applying here to any other underdawg.

5 years as ICU RN experience. MD and DO LOR.
still waiting for DO app to be verified, but should be any day now..

What are your thoughts? I'm definitely retaking mcat next app cycle..but do you think i should withdraw this cycle? I'm not getting any younger here. :scared:👎

If you've already applied/ submitted your secondary then just go with it. That being said if you have not, I'd recommend you sit out this cycle.
 
I applied a month ago, while my mcat was still pending....aacomas application is still processing. no secondaries submitted.

I'll be frank, and I'm not even sure that it's because I'm slightly pessimistic and seeing that schools are raising their averages, but a 25 in many cases isn't going to cover it for many schools. Last year schools broke the limit by pushing the top tier into the 30s, mid tier into the 28s, and even new schools into what was formerly the national average for accepted DO schools.

Hopefully I'm proven wrong this cycle, but I've got my doubts.

Nah, it's cool. I imagine people will still get acceptances, but we probably shouldn't expect things to be like the 2011 cycle where you even with below average stats and an early app would get multiple interviews and acceptances.

But anyways, like I said I'm just a tad bit pessimistic seeing the first round of interviews go out to primarily students with very high mcats.

Idk I've seen quite a few 25s getting interviews. When are you gonna add interviews into the front page Btw?

Yah, we do sometimes with his whole apply with a 3.0/23 and you'll be accepted mantra of statistical impossibility.
But anyways I'll hope this cycle makes me more optimistic as it progresses.

I wasn't even going to apply with my 25 until I actually called DMU admissions and talked to them about it and the rest of my app and was given the "get in first day apps open and you may have a chance" because of rolling admin and I got an interview...so we'll see.

I'm new to the forum. Just thought I'd take a risk and post my story, as I'm looking for honest feedback from an eclectic group of people.

I started undergrad with my sights set on earning a medical degree; however, due to my status as a student-athlete, I did not perform well in school and ultimately gave up the proverbial "dream." I got myself superficially interested in finance and subsequently landed an internship with a private wealth management company during the summer of 2012. I hated what I was doing, and after an extended period of self-reflection I began to revisit the idea of becoming a doctor. Unfortunately, my grades were terrible, and because I was almost finished with college, reversing the damage that I'd done to my grades at my undergraduate institution (a "top 20" school, whatever that means) was not possible. I kept toying with the option of alternative medical routes during the fall of 2012, but didn't have time to seriously pursue it because I was in season.

Over Christmas break between 2012 and 2013, I started to panic. The thought of becoming a doctor had, sorry to be cliche, incepted my mind. I couldn't think of anything else that I wanted to do for the rest of my life. I looked into post-bacc programs and applied. I returned, exceptionally determined, to a rigorous final semester's schedule and came away with an admission to La Salle University's Post-Baccalaureate Certificate Program and a semester's GPA of 3.85. My grades during senior spring pulled my overall GPA up to 2.95, with a science GPA (in 3 classes) of 2.8. I landed a job this summer (2013) working at a hospital in NY. I have been working closely with patients and doctors as a discharge facilitator in the inpatient unit, writing 5 research papers for ultimate publication, managing two clinical practices in the hospital system, and shadowing surgeons and physicians from all areas of the hospital.

I've not taken all of the medical prerequisites yet; I will begin that process at La Salle in the fall of 2013. So, here's my ultimate question: what are my chances? If I perform at an extremely high level in my post-bacc program, can I get into medical school?

Summary:
Underperformed in ugrad, cGPA=2.95; sGPA=2.8
In La Salle's post-bacc program
Only want to be a doctor.

If the applicant is posting in this thread, I am assuming he/she is applying DO.... I was told by one DO school that they look favorably at applicants who have been working in the healthcare field... I was not talking about MD though...

More like 3.3, 24. The majority of applicant just want to get in, and they don't care about the school's mission (no matter how much they lie on secondaries and say they do).
 
trust me, for the VAST majority of underdogs on here, it isn't going to be a matter of whether they get in, but to how established of a school they end up getting into. With all the new schools + Liberty, there WILL be decent opportunity even for people with low 3.0's/low 20's to get in somewhere.

MCAT: 23 (PS: 7, V:8, B:8) **Re-take coming up in 8/22/2013.

My MCAT is below average so I guess I am underdog.

But I do have volunteering, research, shadowing (Scribing under Emergency Department), and medical mission trips (Kenya and Guatemala). Also 4 LoR (1 from M.D. that I worked with for my Scribe job).

First year applying to any M.D./D.O. schools. I am very anxious... You guys think I'll get some interviews?

Nope not yet.

On my AACOMAS, it still states that my application is "processing". I submitted AACOMAS primary applications about 1 week ago so I don't expect them to be done processing yet. Hopefully as soon as possible so that I can get some secondaries back to work with.

Respectfully disagree. I sat in on the board for this years interviews for the new residents.. One of the main things they looked for was past medical experience. They selected 3 previous RNs.

Residency apps =\= med school apps though, so that experience might not transfer. Admittedly if I recall why nursing majors were getting in almost 50% as likely to get in was due to a deficit of nurses and ADCOMs not liking that they wasted a spot. You'll probably not be negatively affected by this, but how much you'll gain from the experience who knows, there's simply not enough evidence.

I do agree there is lack of evidence to support the amount of RNs being accepted, but what is evidence based is that nurses always score the lowest on mcat every year 🙁

I think you'd be better off using that money for scratch and sniff lottos. Just retake, do well, and get in.
 
I honesty dont think that poorly of the US IMGs. Yes it is expensive to go to the Carib, but those physicians actually do well.. and match well too.. Really can't tell the difference between them in the hospital setting.
