If you are an URM AA and your GPAs are the same for AMCAS, you might have a good shot at MD as well.

you guys! could you please let me know my chances? Im freaking out!

CGPA: 3.66
SGPA: 3.75

MCAT:22

Do I have a shot if I submit and apply now or wait for next cycle after a re-take?
Thanks in advance

Are you black? What are your ecs like? Do you have a LOR from a DO? What's your state of residency?

I am a hispanic female, with average ECs, (former scribe, pre-med club involvement, volunteer work in the past) Yes, I have two DO letters, one MD, and two biology faculty letters.

Id say your chances are pretty low applying now because of your low MCAT and late app. However if you have the money for it I would suggest applying to cusom acom lmu pcom ga pikeville vcom and wcu. It's possible you could get some love at one of those. However with a 25 or above MCAT you would have a much better shot at a larger number of schools. So if you are willing to go to a any DO school and aren't worried about money then go for it. Regardless study ur bum off for your retake.

User3 is like that shine of light through the dark clouds of reality haha. The most positive WAMC poster award.

thanks for the information serenade. I withdrew from an international med school and was going to apply this cycle, have my aacomas application complete except for the personal statement, but decided to sit it out and re-take my mcat in January.

cgpa: 3.69
sgpa: 3.77
MCAT: 22 8/6/8 (third try)

decent ECs
Do you guys think I should disclose about attending med school out the US for one week and then returning to the US once I apply? There is a question on aacomas that asks if i ever matriculated into a md or do school. I was thinking mentioning it and stating the reasons why I decided not to stay.

I don't think you should since it will open doors for more questions during interview(s)...

what do you mean open doors?

Also is there a way for them to find out about it? I have no problem explaining the situation, but don't know if it is detrimental to write about it in the application.

Finally got verified!!! When should I expect them to release it to the schools? And then how long until secondaries start rolling in?

User3 is the most out of touch with reality person on SDN I think I have ever seen. Seriously I hope nobody goes around believing some of the stuff he says.

Although, the same can be said for much of the advice given on SDN.

But he IS the hope giver. Even for those who took the Mcat 3 times and failed to break a 20, he's had constructive criticism.

There's no criticism for someone who has had that happen and has genuinely poured their soul into studying for the test. It is simply the end of the road.

I mean he does give hope, but there is a difference between hope and false hope. Citing all those n=1 scenarios for people getting into med schools doesn't do much for when reality hits. I mean I only know because i've been there with a terrible score so I know what it feels like to hold on to the thought of med schools accepting me with a bad score.

I have been reading (PORING over) mdapplicants, underdog threads, and school specific threads for a good while now. I speak from experience to back my saying, for example, that 3.3/23 has a decent shot at the newer schools. For god sakes, people with < 3.4 sgpa's and 23 MCATs that have applied broadly have been able to get multiple interviews. People with high GPA's and 22 MCATs have been able to get multiple interviews and even multiple acceptances from the newer and lower tier schools (like LMU, VCOM, CUSOM, and WVSOM). I have seen multiple instances of this over my SDN existence and they no longer surprise me.

Believe me when I say that for the vast majority of people, it will be a matter of how strong of a school they will get into, not whether they get in or not!

And the thing is, for the newer schools ~95% of the matriculants have a score in the range of 21-29 (I realize it is probably skewed right) so it isn't hopeless for those with lower scores.

Now if only all the rejected boasted about it online being rejected with 3.4/25s.

Yeah but you fail to realize these schools receive thousands of applications, just because they let one person in with bad stats doesn't mean that everyone with bad stats has "a good shot". For all we know those people with bad stats had relatives or friends on the admissions boards or for some odd reason had something crazy in their app that proved to the adcoms that they were a worthy candidate. For the rest of the general population the chances of getting in with low stats are not very good.
question for you Tomato. So if you wouldn't of scored a better MCAT, and you would of been stuck with the 22 that you had, would you be posting the same post?.. Or would you be thanking user3 for the hope that he could of given you?

Could applying late make you an underdog? I've been sitting here waiting to get verified for about 3 weeks now, and I notice that a few schools are coming close to making decisions. I feel helpless not being able to get the ball rolling with my secondaries. What boggles me is that most of these schools deadlines are months from now, I actually considered myself early by submitting early August.

I have a 3.8 and 27 with lots of ECs/research. Could being this late hinder my chances enough to not receive an acceptance?

You're not that late. Had you posted this in January, it might be another story.

Admissions really are on a rolling basis. For every batch of interviews, some get accepted, rejected, or waitlisted.

user3 can get carried away sometimes, but his/her assessments are not wildly inaccurate as much of you guys/gals portraying them... The fact of the matter is: If someone has 3.3-3.4 GPAs and 24-25 MCAT, they have a good shot in getting into DO if they have decent ECs and know when and where to apply...

As user3 said, I think you have 50/50 shot in getting into some of the new and low tier schools like CUSOM, LMU, VCOM, LUCOM, WCUCOM, WVUSOM, KYCOM, PCOM-GA, ACOM...

It's one thing to give people a positive outlook, but it should come with a reminder that you're about to spend a lot of money on the whole thing--and the lower your numbers, the more schools you need to apply to.

I agree these stats can and may land you acceptances to some schools, provided that the rest of your app is good or has something that makes you stand out. However i've seen him tell ppl applying with low 20 MCAT right now still has a decent shot, which in reality it doesn't.

user3 usually gives people hope when they have a combo high-low gpa/mcat or vice versa... ie 3.7 GPA and 22-23 mcat or 3.1-3.2 and 26-27 mcat. It is obvious that a 3.1-3.2 gpa with 22-23 mcat will likely not make it and looking for false reassurance with these stats would be unwise.

Hey guys, Im getting secondaries invites from Texas schools, should I not bother sending in to them with these stats? Specifically TCOM?

I plan on sending secondaries to all the DO programs I applied to? Advice? THANKS!

Nice!! We should update the front page where underdawgs get acceptances from!

I was verified yesterday and received 6 secondaries so far today. If everything of yours is in it shouldn't be too long.

Good god man.

How many schools are you applying to? I'm hoping the same thing happens to me. I'm getting to the party kind of late.

Are you from TX? If so, that state's schools are lawfully obligated to take 90% of its own residents.

Success! Just got an acceptance. 3.1/31/no research but a lot of communty service stuff

Keep your heads up and keep moving forward guys and gals, we can do it!

No I am not from TX but I do have family in there (which I know doesnt merit very much at all). Is it worth it or should I just not waste my time and/or money?

Sooo.... I submitted my app earlier today. I would like to make a change to my app. Is it possible to do it before my application gets verified? Also if I do some changes, will the schools know of my changes or not?

User3 actually speaks the truth. 3.5/24 and I have 3 interviews. I think user3 is the only one who realizes that DO schools are not just about numbers. User3 keep on keeping on. You were the only one who gave me any hope in my chances thread.

3.5/24 is a far cry from the 3.0/23 I keep seeing marked as competitive.

Probably, and no they won't. They haven't received your application yet.

s/he never says competitive, only that you have a chance. Nothing wrong with that. In most cases user3 has a point.

I see them say those exact numbers with "competitive" all the time.

I have not seen him/her said that... He usually says 3.3-3.4 and 24-25 MCAT are competitive, but people with numbers like 3.3-3.4 GPA/22-23 MCAT has a shot while most people in here would tell you don't even bother applying...
