2013 APPIC Internship Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Another rejection. Children's mercy hospital and clinics. Personalized.

Well, the wait is finally over. I just received my first notification - a rejection from Cincinnati VAMC. 👎

It is a little disappointing but fingers crossed for the next 20 notifications!
Forgot to add - health track for Cincinnati VAMC

Personalized interview offer by email from the Syracuse VA (general track). I submitted my application on 11/14.

nyprincess, is there any way that you could make the newest additions to the list be a different color? if it is too much of a pain, no problem. thank you for volunteering to admin the list!!

Done!
New invitations in BLUE
New rejections in RED

thank you!! you are a goddess!!!!

What are some thoughts about attending or not attending Open Houses at sites that note they consider applicants even if they do not attend? Is it worth it to save the $ and date for a site that requires in-person interviews?

I'd be interested in hearing more abt this as well--i have 3 sites on my list like that.

Thanks, nyprincess!

I'd be interested in hearing more about the open house issue as well. I have one open house on the other side of the nation (Tacoma VA), and I don't plan on going because I have some travel restrictions. They explicitly say that attendance will not affect rankings and that it's only to help you make your decision.

Sorry to hear! Hopefully interviews are coming your way. Was this the adult or child track?

Thanks! I hope so too:xf:
Best of luck to you!
Kings County rejection was for the Adult track

Most sites say not attending the open house won't negatively impact your application. However, if you go, you will be interviewed and your interview will factor in, of course. So going is to your benefit, but won't hurt you NOT to go.

I know that there are at least a couple of spots where the open house is truly an open house - so you can get a feel for the place and meet people - without any interviews or impact on final rankings

Yeah, probably depends on how they handle the open house. If they say it's not going to affect your ranking one way or the other, then I'd likely only consider going in the contexts of 1) how many other interviews I had/how my schedule looked, 2) how much I liked the site, and 3) how my finances were doing.

If the site will be conducting interviews that could work in your favor, then if I had the money, had the time, and were a good interviewee, I'd probably make the effort to go.

Hi there,
Does anyone want to share a hotel room at the Skyline Inn and/or a rental car with me? Just PM me. Thanks.

Well, I don't know if this will help but my roommate applied to a site (twice) that only held open houses instead of interviews. He went the first year and didn't match (obviously). Second time, he didn't go to the open hous. Guess where he is currently an intern now?

Me too - rejected from Texas Woman's Univ this morning. Good luck with your other sites.

Sorry to hear that! But this is just the beginning of the notifications--here's hoping that you'll get many invites later this month and in December.

Generic email invite to neuropsychology track at the University of Chicago!

University of Chicago, Adult Neuropsychology Track via generic email. Interview dates are as follows: 1/4, 1/11, 1/18, and 1/25

University of Oklahoma Health Science Center, OU Medical Center/Clinical Neuropsychology, phone call (11/16)
University of Florida, Department of Clinical and Health Psychology, Adult Neuro and Underserved Neuro, personalized email (11/16)

Also rejected from Cincinnati VAMC, Neuropsychology and Health Psychology. Trying to keep my head up!

So there's two sites that I havent been rejected from, but that have sent out interview invites (but not to me). Is it likely that I'm in the running, but havent been invited yet, or that they just havent bothered to reject yet? Someone with insight into how internships do this, please help me out. Should I just consider myself out of the running there?

Bmed, just wanted to let you know that I am in the same boat. I wish that there were some more formalized way of letting applicants know their status a bit sooner. There are a couple sites with late deadlines that I could add to my list, and having a better sense of where I stand would help me figure out whether it makes sense to apply...

I am in the same boat. One of my sites sent out interviews to someone else, but then sent me an interview several days later. I think they do certain tracks at a time, so I wouldn't read too much into it.

Same here--there are two sites that sent out e-mails on Monday and Tuesday. But the persons who reported that here didn't list the tracks, so I'm not sure of my chances. Hope it's as you say, and they aren't done reviewing all of the applications! I also noticed that several sites (not mine) actually sent out invites before their application deadline, so it's obvious that those sites are not done with their interview notifications and must have some sort of rolling review process.

Me too. My current practicum supervisor was previously involved in intern selection. She mentioned that the site used to divide up the applications by track and different reviewers notified people at different times. She also cautioned me to keep in mind that most reviewers are busy with other things so it is likely that most of our notifications will be late in the process.

Personalized email invite for Neuropsych track at Emory. Interview dates are: 12/7, 12/14, or 1/11.

It's going to vary by site; some will make all of their decisions at once, and others will use more of a rolling process (even potentially within the same track). Since it's generally impossible for applicants to know, my advice is to not count yourself out until you receive an explicit rejection email.

Boston University Medical's Center for Multicultural Training (One date offered: 12/6)

Yeah, we had some folks last year who attended open houses where they were provided tours and the opportunity to talk with others, but no one kept up with the applicants. There were no nametags, attendance sheet, or what have you. It sounded really informal and "take it or leave it."

General track. 11/20. Poop. Bye bye top choice.

Everyone likely has an ideal top choice when they submit their applications, but try not to feel significantly discouraged if you get a rejection from your "top choice." Sites may look great on paper (e.g., offer a great stipend, be in a great location, name brand recognition), but that does not mean they will also stay your top choice after interviews. Once you visit a location, and multiple locations, then you can truly judge what has value and meaning for you both professional and personally. It is interesting that APPIC list statistics of how many applicants get their number 1 rank, but I have often wondered how many people get their pre-application submission dream number 1. In fact, APPIC should have applicants due a pre-submission rank order that would be anonymous and have no weighting at all in the process, but compare with post-interview ranks.

First notification, first interview! Durham VA. Generic email, interview dates of Jan 7, 8, 10, 15, or 16.

Not sure if this has been posted already, but just got an interview invite from the Durham VA. Interview dates are:

Monday, January 7
Tuesday, January 8
Thursday, January 10
Tuesday, January 15
Wednesday, January 16

Personal phone call from training director at Columbia, MO Consortium (Missouri Health Sciences) for an interview for the VA track. Dates were January 4, 11, 18, 25.

I'm bummed that I didn't get an e-mail from Durham--that was one of my sites! Not one of my top-ranked ones, though, so it's okay. I already have 5 interviews, so I should stop worrying so much about it.

Thanks for the words of encouragement. Much appreciated. Yes, perhaps it wasn't a good match for me after all. Better to think that way.

ugh i am waiting for that to happen to me ( I have a few "1st choices"). hang in there!!!

I keep on reminding myself that my application will be reviewed by maybe 1 maybe more people, people i have never met, who have their own personal likes and dislikes, which may be something wholly different from how the program is presented on the website and in the brochure. the people on the committee may not actually be folks i would work with heavily, or they may like my app a lot but got their top choices last year and so don't this year. or the fit may be something that is not clear in the brochure, kinda like how it is hard to put into words why your partner or friends are so uniquely great, but they are. fit can be concrete aspects of a program but it can also be ineffable qualities that may not come across in written materials. there are all these unknown factors.

Does anyone know if human resource departments at major hospitals will call for interviews? I received a missed call but no voicemail from Columbia NYPRes Human Resource Dept. today. I will probably try tomorrow on Thanksgiving- but am dying to know from anyone who got an interview ????

I am sure they will be closed on Txgving (maddening I know). Is there any OTHER reason why you'd get a call from their HR dept? Have you ever applied for a job there or ut your cv into their online system?

No- I tried to narrow it down and have no other reason for the call. I guess I have to sweat I out and return the call-which is probably nothing anyway!

This is such a strange process. I interviewed at Durham last year but haven't gotten an invite email (yet, although still holding out hope!). I'm faring considerably better in terms of interview invites this year, and I thought for sure they would bring me back. How bizarre

I received a phone call from Columbia/NY Pres for an interview, but the number is listed as being from NYSPI with no mention of HR (I just Googled it). I'm not sure if that is helpful to you at all, but I hope you are able to figure it out soon! I know I would be going nuts not knowing. Sending lots of good thoughts your way!

And the maddening silence continues!!! I see that Utah State University sent out invitations.... I suppose I can assume I won't be moving to Utah next year. 🙁 On the plus side, Nebraska hasn't rejected me yet, so maybe an interview offer is coming! I'm keeping my chin up and trying to remember that 17 of my sites haven't contacted ANYONE yet.

Best of luck everyone! Have a happy Thanksgiving and try not to let the stress interfere with your holiday. 🙂
