2013 APPIC Internship Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Interview offer for the St. Louis VAMC. Interview dates are Jan 4, 11, and 18.

The interview didn't specify what track, but I stated that I wanted to be considered for both the General and Neuropsych tracks.

Did it seem like a mass email?

Ditto 🙁

I didn't apply this year. I was interested in their forensic track. They still had it listed on their APPIC materials, and then their website didn't list it. Seemed a little disorganized. So, based on that I am going with you guys deserve better. Good luck with the rest!:luck:

FWIW, it also seems that a lot of CMH places have not sent out invites or rejections yet. I have many on my list that seem to still be making decisions.

A friend in my program got an invite at Miami/Jackson Memorial today for the adult rehab and behavioral medicine tracks! All I know is it came via email. I applied to both assessment tracks and haven't heard anything yet.

Personalized email invite to San Francisco VA. Interviews any day in January except holidays.

Generic email invite for Behavioral Medicine/Neuropsychology training track at UW SOM. Open House 1/9/12!

Non-personalized rejection letter from the site - Neuropsychology track. A friend in my program got an invite for the Neuropsych Track, so I think they've sent those out as well.

*just keep swimming, just keep swimming* 🙂

Me too, a "not a good fit" response for the Victoria Hospital Track at London Clinical Psychology Residency Program 👎

Kind generic e mail - no go from Long Beach VA

Ditto. While I appreciated them taking the time to talk about their process, it also made me angry at this whole thing. How many years of talking about the internship imbalance will we have before something is actually done about it? Not that it's their job to do this, but they just hit a sore spot. This makes 6 rejections in a row for me, and 10 total, + 4 interviews. Sigh.

Positive thoughts are going out to all of those who are struggling with not hearing and rejections. 😍

Ok now here goes random musing/vent. Being in this process now is opening my eyes to how bad the internship imbalance issue is. I am also realizing that people who are leading our programs (at least mine and at least PhD programs) are still applying crazy logic that amazingly is not based on empirical reality. Advice like - you shouldn't apply to more than 15 sites (really? look at the stats, your match rate doesn't go down until you apply to more than 21 so why not apply to more). And this constant "of course you will match, you are a strong student" - really, look at the stats? Also, coming from a PhD program, I think they totally dismiss the strength and numbers of PsyD programs and do not appreciate that many sites do not care about a PhD! They tell themselves that certain PsyD programs account for the majority of the applicants and they aren't qualified. Um, that is kind of a blind, sweeping generalization. In our program, we have to FIGHT for placements at the VA or a medical center and every year, students apply for match without either one of those placements and there is really no reason for it. It has a real impact on those student's interview options. This may not be the case in all PsyD programs, probably, but I find that my friends in those programs have a lot more options for practica. This really matters in my mind. What better way to base an internship hire than prior experience in the same setting with a reference? Duh!

Ok, I just needed to get that vent out there.

Good luck to everyone! Alot can happen in a week! :luck:

Can't agree more! This is my second time around and hearing that others are getting 6 interviews or more is really frustrating/frightening to me. I, too, have gotten advice from supervisors and advisors and it is all based on information that was accurate 5 to 10 years ago but is now outdated. This is now a whole different game. Seriously don't know what I'll do if I don't match: only 1 invite, 1 waitlist, and 4 "no gos", and 1 "we don't have that internship anymore". :barf:
Waiting on 13. :xf:

I know the AAPI says all payments are final but can you get your money back in that case? The email sounds like they knew COMCARE may not be able to accommodate interns this year. They could have at least said they were not accepting applications for that rotation until further notice.

I wish! I would have totally picked another site if I had known that this would no longer be an option. Now I wish I would have applied to 25 sites instead of 20 or so...

Anyone heard from NOPIP - Laureate/TU counseling center track yet?

Here's hoping for better luck, eh? :luck:

Has anyone heard about interviews for the Substance Abuse Track at MUSC? I know they do rolling but it seems like the other tracks have sent out invites....

Hey-
Regarding not hearing either way-

That happened to me yesterday.. A site sent out rejections and invites on the 3rd but I heard nothing. I emailed the training director and she stated that if I did not receive an invite then I should consider myself out of the running.. The language APPIC uses regarding this matter states- "reasonable" efforts must be made to contact each applicant.

Did the site say they would notify by a date other than 12/15? I wouldn't contact any site before either their announced date or 12/15, just seems to invite a rejection for not following the process. Just my two cents. And sorry, but that email they sent you was harsh.

Congrats! And I got one, too, but for the General Child Track, which is the same day.

Personalized invites from both UPenn and UCF Counseling Centers.

So far 8 invites, 4 declines, and waiting on 13 more.

What do you all think happens when people have a ton of interviews and don't match? I have 9 and, like everyone else, I know amazing people that only got 1 and matched (to a top choice) and amazing people that got 17 and didn't match. So clearly there is an X factor that we can't control, that is not logical. But any reflections on what some controllable factors may be?

I don't know that "fit" is a "controllable" factor..but my observation is that some applicants are better than others at selecting sites that are congruent with their experience/goals. Programs often get applications from students that they do not interview because it is not evident that, despite good qualifications, the intern REALLY wants to do what is done at that particular site. TDs want to interview applicants who are actually likely to rank and match with them and they read with an ear for that. And the algorithm of how they rank is complex at each site.

Also, sometimes applicants are not realistic about how competitive some sites are and put too many applications into the most competitive bracket sites. They might get ranked 4th at 5 (or 10) competitive sites that only take 3 interns...so highly qualified candidates can wind up unmatched and more strategic planners do get matched. It is the best system we have at the moment but it does not serve everyone well.

Finally, many students apply before their dissertations are sufficiently advanced. Sites are motivated to have students who will progress to post-doc readily and not being at the data analysis stage can be a factor.

Thanks, coloradocutter. I appreciate your encouragement. It would`ve been a good site, but there are a couple of other Colorado sites I would be more excited to get an interview at, like the Mental Health Institute at Pueblo... which as far as I know, hasn`t made any decisions yet.

I interviewed at MUSC today, and there was a SA applicant there.

Hey-

Yes the site stated Dec 1 as their notification date. Yeah I definitely would not have contacted them had the website stated a 15th notification date!

Personalized email invite to San Francisco VA. Interviews any day in January except holidays.

I know San Francisco VA sent out a batch of rejections a while ago, and looks like they have now sent out some invitations. Does anyone know if they've sent out a second round of rejections (or, just generally, have any other people heard)? I haven't received anything from them either way.

Thanks!

I'm also curious, this is my top site and I'm rather freaking out now that it's the evening and I haven't heard anything!

Thank you all for posting your feedback and experiences through this process. It is nice to have interactions with others going through the APPIC internship process. I wish us all the best and a successful day on February 22nd 🙂.

I had a little bit of news today....heard from two additional sites today. Now at 5 rejections, 2 interviews and 8 more still out there. Hoping that next week is productive for everyone !

I was wondering what most people's ratio of interviews to rejections seem to be. Looking around anecdotally at my own program and a little on here is that generally people are getting slightly more rejections than invites.

I personally have received so far 6 interviews, 8 rejections, 1 wait list (didn't even know that was a thing), and I have 8 more to go (though I think 2 of them are rejects-in-waiting because they already sent out interview e-mails.)

What's going on with other people?

10 interviews, 5 rejections, waiting on 8

The DCT of that program sounds very rude.... I wouldn't like to work in a place with someone like that, maybe it's a good thing that you didn't get invited because a better place will come up 👍

I just finished what I should call a 38hr "driving campaign" to make it to three interviews. Driving was cheaper than any other option, including public transit, but it has really exhausted me. Just drove a straight 13 hrs back to my home state after last interview. Thankful I could go...but, UGH! LOL. I just wanted to post that we all still need to find ways to take good care of ourselves so we can shine! And I'm not feeling very sun shiny right about now!

I think I have a "Get an internship or die trying" mentality right now, but sleep is going to the top of my currently non-existent self care list! 😴

I need to get better at self-care! What are you guys doing for self-care during this madness?

Yeah, I'll have to do a lot of driving too to save money on interviews. I'm planning to try to catch up on rest on the weekends and on weekdays between interviews (and prioritizing sleep over exploring the cities in which my interviews are located). Also, I'm thinking coffee will be necessary. If you already have 3 interviews down in December, that's huge for self-care. My January is going to be nightmarish in terms of sleep/stress!

Where's the "like" button around here? 🙂

Mostly just rocking back and forth in the fetal position.....seems to be working 😳

I received a generalized email invitation to interview at Mid-Ohio Psychological Services yesterday. The dates offered were Friday, January 18 and Tuesday, January 22.

Wow PhDiva 2013! That is pretty impressive!

The most significant thing I've done for self-care is allowing myself to step away from this process once in a while. I don't allow myself to constantly check my email or SDN; I give myself a time limit. I've also decided that, no matter what, I'm going to enjoy this holiday season. For me, that means taking time to decorate my home, baking, belting out Christmas songs as loud as I can while driving, and spending time with my friends who know nothing about APPIC 🙂 I refuse to allow this process to destroy my physical and/or mental health!

Think there will be any invites on the weekend? Or can I stop being crazy 2 days out of the week? I peeked at the thread from last year and several sites sent out invites on the weekend...including 2 of the sites I applied to!

Eeek. Only 1 invite so far, 3 rejections, 2 sites have dropped out. Waiting on 20 more. Trying not to freak out.

I haven't personally received an invite over a weekend; however, I did receive a rejection on a Sunday. Not the best email to receive on a Sunday afternoon, but I guess it is better to know about a site rather than keep waiting. I would say that it is rare to receive an invite on a weekend, but not unheard of.

Sounds like next week is going to be a big notification week for you. Hang in there! Best of luck!!!

PsychGal222 I think you are right on with this approach! I'm going to try and adopt your philosophy. After all, internship is one very important step in graduate training, but sometimes it's easy to lose perspective and start to feel like it is the MOST IMPORTANT THING EVER. Here is to a weekend of reduced email checking and perhaps some baking or other self-care activity. Hope everyone is hanging in there! 👍

On the SSMH webpage, today is listed as the notification deadline. Is anyone expecting to hear from them today? Or are you assuming it is more likely to be Monday??

I not holding my breath on hearing from them today. Sounds like a lot of these places didn't update their websites from previous years. Irritating.

I hope you take good care of yourserselve. Personally I'm planning to spend whatever money is reasonable, even if that means using my student loans, to get a hotel near by my earliest interview, try to schedule interviews at least a day apart so I can rest and prepare for the next one, flying within the state, and renting cars as needed. I don't want to be too tired in my interviews. The way I see it is if I match my investment would have been worth it. If I don't, it would be an interesting experience 🙂

I schedule bi-weekly massages and bi-weekly sessions with a consultant who's been through it already, to unload the stress. It's much less stressful the second time through since all my coursework is done.

I have one in-person interview on Monday (on the plane now) and went Saturday to see a little of the town and get good rest. I'm also seeing some friends there for dinner tonight!

You're right wkupmaggie, internship isn't the MOST IMPORTANT THING EVER! Having a reasonable perspective can be hard sometimes but it's needed. Spending the weekend catching up with friends and Christmas baking. The break from internship craziness is welcome!

Invitation from South Shore Mental Health! 😀😀😀😀

Wow, impressed they work Sat. Interview date Jan 4th (pre-selected)
