2013 APPIC Internship Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Tonight I received a personalized e-mail invitation to interview at James Quillen VAMC. I was surprised because they had already popped upon the forum earlier...must be doing rolling invites.

Oh, holy crap, that's AWESOME! I loved their site, but had resigned it to the "no" pile! YAY for hope!

Phone interview with Orlando VA this morning...wow, that's all I have to say! Very challenging questions compared to my previous interviews. I was so nervous and they could tell 🙁

Resaroman - thanks for sharing your experience with the Orlando VA. It seems to me, that these Phase II interview are ALOT more intense! I feel like Phase I, I mostly had questions like "what do you do for fun?" or "where do you see yourself in 5 yrs?" Its becoming an endurance battle at this point, trying to not dwell on what has happened and focusing on the upcoming interviews, but its been hard.

ps - I was poking around some of your previous posts, and I can relate, I thought having diverse practicum experience would help us, but not sure if it's panning out that way for me either. *fingers crossed* for all of us that there is a program out there that is a great fit for each of us! 🙂

While its very possible that these sites have contacted people, and it just happens to not be anyone on SDN, it seems suspect to me. I am still waiting on like 7 sites (all UCC except San Bernardino) and I find it surprising that not one single person has heard from them. Not even a "friend of a friend heard through the grapevine that so and so got an interview here and here"...

Let's say we are all going through phase 2 with at least 3 other people in our cohort. If you figure how many sites you may here about then, it just seems more than a coincidence that there are so many sites that haven't been heard from yet.

Not sure if it helps or not, but I have an interview set for this Friday! So perhaps some of these other sites that haven't contacted people yet, will also offer interviews closer to the wire as well. Here's hoping anyways...

i really thought there would be more news popping off here today. Huh, maybe tomorrow.

congrats to all who got good news today.

I KNOW! Me too. I am surprised. What are these sites doing?! Dang!

I know! I'm starting to care less about my receiving interviews and more about sites just saying something to someone! Though, I am hoping for a couple of specific sites....

Here's wishing everyone a better day tomorrow!

Has anyone else not heard anything either way from Cincinnati VA or Univ. of Oklahoma? They sent both rejections and invitations, but I haven't received news either way. Also, what about UAB?

I'm also still waiting on Alabama... someone has to hear something soon!

I got a rejection today from Cincinnati.

I emailed training directors yesterday but still have no replies. I know that TDs are not mandated to contact students but if you initiate the email, are they also not mandated to reply?

I don't know that they're mandated, but I imagine they'll try to return your email at some point if it's reasonably possible. Odds are they're getting absolutely swamped both with emails and applications, and will likely be diverting the most significant portion of their resources to reviewing materials and interviewing applicants.

Even if they don't reply, I'm absolutely certain that the TDs appreciate how stressful the process is for applicants; thus, I wouldn't take an absence of a reply to mean that they don't appreciate the situation.

I don't think anyone is ever "mandated" to reply to an email.. It's definitely common courtesy, but given that you only contacted them yesterday, I'd give them a little bit more time. I know it's frustrating though.

Have you checked your spam folder? I interviewed with Oklahoma already, and have been in regular contact with them. If you haven't heard anything, I'd shoot them an email asking what's up.

Lol I gues they are not mandated to reply. This was incorrect word usage on my part. Courtesy is definitely a better descriptor. Nothing in the spam but still hopeful

oh my gosh, ppl, it is tuesday already! i cant believe that i still have no news from 5 sites! and im not expecting a letter, i know that they are not required to inform us of our status this time around. 5 sites on my list have interviewed fellow sdners so i know that i can prob cross them off the list (and that they still exist!) but a whole additional 5 sites dont appear to have said anything to anybody!

1. University of Alabama at birmingham
2. coatesvile va (neuro track)
3. northern california VA (neuro track)
4. bay pines VA
5. Jesse brown VA

am i going crazy? did yall already hear from them and i missed it? because it is getting really last minute here!!!

(sorry for all the exclamation marks and general repetitive nature of this post, i just feel better at least writing to yall instead of wringing my hands in consternation )

Wagwise, I feel the same exact way! I too am waiting for ANYTHING about:

1. University of Alabama at Birmingham
2. Coatesvile VA (neuro track)
3. Northern California VA (neuro track)
4. Jesse Brown VA

Additionally, I also haven't seen anything about:

5. San Bernardino County Department of Behavioral Health
6. University of Idaho
7. Applied Psychology Group of Texoma
8. Institute for Multicultural Counseling and Education Services
9. Child and Family Guidance Center

Yes, that is 9 sites and its Tuesday!

I just had my interview with UMDNJ for the Clinica Latina site. I was extended an interview on March 4th and he's conducting interviews until the 14th. Just in case anyone is still waiting on this one.

FYI to all inquiring....I received an interview email from Bay Pines 3/1. Based on the details of the email, I believe 25 people received the same email to interview. I interviewed on the 8th.

I have yet to hear from:

UAB
UMDNJ/Robert Wood Johnson
Ann Arbor VA
Jesse Brown VA
Reading Hospital
Institute for Multicultural Counseling &Educational services

Has ANYONE heard from any of these?

Yesterday I heard from James Quillen, so I think they are rolling if you are still waiting!

Phone interview with Orlando VA this morning...wow, that's all I have to say! Very challenging questions compared to my previous interviews. I was so nervous and they could tell 🙁

Anyone have any idea why the Orlando VA didn't fill any of their spots in Phase 1? (Aside from perhaps that no one was capable of answering their challenging questions appropriately 🤣) I'm wondering if that should be a concern for applicants when ranking the site. I know they are not APA accredited, but I would have thought they would fill at least one or two positions.

Are we allowed to do this?

You might want to look back throug the thread and the updated list on page 92. I am almost certain people have heard from Reading Hospital and someone posted something about UMDNJ on pg 97.

APPIC asks that we be judicious in deciding whether or not to do this. I have e-mailed a couple I haven't heard from (and from my understanding nobody has heard from) because it is Tuesday! I figured that I had either not heard from them because I wasn't being considered, which in that case my e-mail won't affect anything OR they have not sent things out and my e-mail was polite enough to not make it a deal-breaker.

I was not aware either that we could not email sites especially if there has been no contact. We were informed that sites were not mandated to send out rejection emails but I am trying to to move on and not continue to feel like I am in limbo and I know a lot of people feel this way. My emails just politely asked the status of my apps.

I received an invite by phone this morning from Western Kentucky Consortium. I had marked them off my list, because others had already heard from them last week. Don't give up hope. It ain't over 'til it's over. This makes 9 interviews for me. Wish I could have been so lucky during Match I.

Wow CACPstudent, thats great congratulations! I'm in a different situation where I got more interviews Phase I than II. Did you change anything about your application? Or apply to places that you didn't want to the first time? To me, it seems like Phase II is more competitive than Phase I as there are roughly 1000 of us trying for 280 spots, and not too many of those are APA.

Actually, I did change my application and I'm sorry to say that I left out my ethnicity this time around. I'm Native American. Of course I can't say for sure if this is what changed things, but it has certainly made me wonder.

Received an e-mail today from LAS*PIC to set up an interview. It was addressed to "dear applicant" and offered three options, as far as days are concerned for interviewing.

It would be disheartening if your ethnicity made such a difference. May I ask why you chose to leave this off?

CACPstudent - I heard that it is best not to mention ethnicity unless you speak a second language and are highlighting this. I'm a minority and one of my supervisors suggested that I don't mention my ethnicity in my essays but I know some sites say they highly encourage minorities to apply so I think mentioning your ethnicity depends on the site.

I decided to leave it off after I noticed that a disproportionate number of minority students at my school were the ones that did not match in Match I.

Here's the skinny with Ann Arbor. I decided to call and inquire about interviews. The TD said that as long as we have not heard from them, our application is being considered. If you receive an email it will be to inform you that you are No Longer being considered. In this case, no news is really good news.

So did you take it off your essays and cover letters? I didn't realize we could actually make any changes to the application itself for Phase II. I'm pretty sure it asked what ethnicity I was on the actual application. I noted on my cover letters that I am bilingual, but I definitely incorporated my ethnicity or nationality in my multicultural essay because I thought I was giving it depth and personalizing it. Perhaps I shouldn’t have done this?

I am hope the best for everyone in this Phase II process. I am seeing that many of the sites where I did not even snag an interview are now seeking interns in Phase II. Yet they did not interview me, even thought I matched at an APA site. Something seems very very very wrong about this whole mess. If anyone could reconstruct the process from the ground up, what would you do to change it?? Would you scrap the process and what would or should replace it.

I only changed my essays and cover letters. I did NOT take anything off my CV even though it has experiences/information that would reveal my ethnicity to those paying attention.

Sad.. I've experienced the same thing though and this is my second year applying. Both myself, and peers of 'color'

neuropsych2be, looks like ur eager for a response since uve already posted this twice in the last hr. i dont think ur questions are being purposefully ignored, but they may not really belong in this thread. so far this thread has been about interviews for internship in phase I and phase II.

we r all so involved in that, i doubt we have much capacity for a theoretical discussion of how to reconstruct the entire process. at least not until after match day, lol.

Whew! So far I've received three interviews, two rejection emails, and four assumed rejections. Still waiting on:

University of Central Florida
Southern Illinois University
New Mexico State University
Indiana Perdue
