2014-2015 University of Mississippi Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Me! Anyone willing to share stats..?
30 MCAT 3.8 gpa. Good bit of volunteering, research, and leadership. Just graduated this past spring so I guess I'm sort of a non-trad? I got the secondary from them but I'm still waiting on my rec letters and stuff. Apparently you have to send them the transcripts despite having them already sent to AMCAS

What about you?

Same boat, my PMC takes a long time to send their letter, otherwise would be done by now. Also, anyone please post if you have received II.

You have to log in into their application portal to access the secondary. Most of it is just the background info which shouldn't take more than 15-20 mins to complete. They have an essay this time though: Describe what you have done to demonstrate your desire for a career in medicine (500 word limit)

Hope this helps!

Yikes..getting nervous. Just submitted my primary, should be verified by next Thursday according to usual wait times. Taking the MCAT on the very last date possible for UMC...which is in 5 days. Very nervous and not hitting 28+. I will likely have to reapply next year bc I don't think my MCAT + GPA combo will cut it although I do believe I have fairly strong I'm everything else.

Interviews haven't started yet. The first one is September 9th which is only for EDP; the 2nd one is on September 19th, which is EDP and RDP.

About your MCAT, I did much better on the actual thing than I did on my practice tests. In addition, I had to take it another time after that and that score went up 8 points, so there's definitely room to improve if you don't do well on that one! So be confident and good luck!

Anyone interviewing on 9/9 or 9/19?

Thanks for the update about interviews. Dr. Case wasn't giving out much info. I would feel better about my mcat if this wasn't the first and last time I could take it for umc! With the mcat changing, most schools are accepting mcat scores well into November but Dr. Case said that is not the case with UMC, scores must be received by Oct 15, which means you have to test on either Sept 10 or 12 🙁

I feel like I'm capable of a good score but just haven't enough practice under my belt. Good luck to you all.

Does anyone know the interview schedule. On the website it says they only have two interview dates per month. Also, did you guys get a "file complete" email or just green check marks on the website?

Could you shed some light on the interview process please. I know they do MMI but it would be nice to get an interviewee's perspective. What type of questions, group/individual interviews, etc. Also, any general tips and advice for the future interviewers?

I would be glad to! As you already stated, Ole Miss does MMI. Unfortunately, I'm not allowed to disclose any questions, but I will be glad to let you know how I prepared. Simply google MMI questions and practice answering those questions with little time to think. You will have 2 minutes to read the scenario, and then 8 minutes to discuss said scenario with the evaluator. I personally found that they love when you incorporate your own life experiences to relate to the scenario. In my opinion, the MMI system really allows you to demonstrate how you can have compassion and empathy for people. Worry a lot less about "impressing the evaluators" and a lot more about letting your true motivation and compassion for people shine through. They will see right through the prototypical answers. Be honest and real with he interviewers and they will respond with questions relating to what you have said. Always try to see both sides of every question. Don't assume your way is the only correct way. Hope that helps! Let me know of there are any more questions or things I might can clarify better.

Hey guys!
Officially accepted as of yesterday morning.
GPA/MCAT: 4.0/4.0/36
Interviewed 9/26
Interview was alright, not that stressful. But the rest of the day was a great atmosphere! The lunch and tour with the M4's were both super chill and very fun and informative. Overall, good experience and now to sit back and relax!

I have an interview coming up at UMC and I was wondering if dark colored pant/skirt suits were the standard interview attire for women? Also, was common it for women to take a purse (if so, a large or small bag) or a leather portfolio?

If you haven't interviewed yet, pin, I'd say yes: dark pant/skirt suit is pretty standard. I'm an MS1 here, and I'm trying to remember if the girls wore purses. I'd bring a small one if you're gonna bring one. One thing I'd say (and it gets said but some people never listen), don't wear heels unless you always do and don't mind walking long distances in them. Saw some girls when I interviewed that seemed like it was their first time wearing them. Anyway, if anyone has any questions about UMC or med school or whatever, feel free to hit me up and I'll help in any way I can. I know this thread is always so quiet each year and it sucks to feel like you can't get any feedback.

Lol yeah 10/15. 4.0 GPA and 31 MCAT. Have talked to multiple people with similar stats that were also postponed

Ok, thanks for sharing! I have a 3.6 BCPM/28 MCAT. I had heard of several people accepted with less, so I was just curious! Hopefully it will work out in January! Good luck!

Anybody receive an invite to complete the secondary and before submitting received a rejection email?

I didn't know we had a thread! I interviewed on 9/17 and got accepted. 4.0 and 28 mcat. Have any of you applied anywhere else?

Glad I finally found our thread! Interviewed 10/21 and accepted 10/22. Does anyone have suggestions on where to live thats close to the med school?

It's been a month since I sent in my secondary, and I haven't heard anything from them. My application status online says pending. I called them and found out that my letters weren't checked marked on their side. I emailed one of the lady's there, and she said we'll let you know. Am I basically not getting an interview? If so why do they not just tell me? Thank you in advance.

Don't give up! I was not even marked complete until end of October and I had all my material in by September! (I thought I had been passed over actually). Its a slow process in general for all school, hang in there. :highfive:

I wish they would just let me know so I can figure something else out. So I can put my other plans into action. But I guess I must wait. I think interviews end in January from what the receptionist/administrative assistant told me.

Anyone interviewing tomorrow? Just got in town if anyone wants to meet up.

My LizzyM was similar to that and I was tabled as well. Anyone have insight as to the percentage of people who are tabled that end up getting in?

Have heard that generally around 50 people are tabled and that "most" will get it. Was told this from a pretty reputable source so I'm staying optimistic!

Does anyone know when they usually let tabled people know if they got in? I heard mid January?

I'm assuming it can be as late as May. According to their website, that's when they strongly discourage holding multiple acceptances. So until then... There's hope!

From what I have heard they should let everybody know by the end of January

Congratulations!! There is a FB group for the accepted students who are planning on attending in fall in case anybody was wondering!

Congrats to all accepted! I was wondering if anyone knew stats about the waitlist. Traditionally, is there much movement? Any guess on number of waitlisted? Thanks for any insight.

I'm pretty sure around 20-25 are wait listed. last year only around 5 were accepted, but the year before all were accepted. hope that helps some!
