2014 Nontrad Applicants' Progress Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
milski, how're you doing? You're not hiding any good news from us, are you?
No, I'm not, unless I can hold to the "no news is good news" mantra. 😀 Which does get shakier by the day. On the bright side, I have received only one rejection this year. Waiting for 11 more schools, from which I've heard nothing. Some of them are well known silent rejectors which were reach for me anyway, some are state schools which should be a fit for me.

H'm. I'd say it should pick up now that it's January. Nothing from Minnesota?

Eventually I need to get the rest of the decisions, so I do agree with that. 😀

Nope, nothing. They're one of those that I expect to be more or less a fit for me, excluding lack of ties with the state. Disappointingly, VCU and Arizona/Phoenix sent me packing, which really makes me wonder what is going on.

OK milski, I'm crossing the parts of my body, which were not already crossed for a couple of my schools, for you. You should see the configuration my body is in now!
But seriously, I'm rooting for ya.

Not fair, the people around you are getting more entertainment out of this than me. 😛

Thanks Amy (or Darya?)/Cisco. Getting a string of rejections is really a downer and having you around has been great for my morale. A big part of why I'd hate to have to reapply is losing you as peers to hang out with.

Do I detect sarcasm? 🙂 At this point, I assume silent rejections/don't care about schools I haven't heard from and haven't withdrawn from (yet).
All's well that ends well. You already have an acceptance to a good school and can get more acceptances from the interviews you've already attended - who cares about AECOM, right?

Your snark meter 3000 is indeed fully functional. It would've been nice to attend school in NYC, mostly just to live in NYC. But after being accepted to one school that I really liked, my attitude towards most other rejections/holds/waitlists is basically no1curr. At this point there is only one school that would definitely change my mind, and two others that would maybe change my mind depending on what sort of fin aid they're offering.

I'm sure there are nice supportive people applying every year; plus, we're not going anywhere from SDN - but I haven't given up rooting for you anyway 😉

Yeah, I guess I'll stick around for milski.no one else though. Maybe wholeheartedly.

Edit, beach Blondie too.

I'm pretty sure the class of 2018 is the last hope for humanity. Some robot with a hologram told me. Something about "you're our only hope" and "quenobee".

😀
How about some people who love studying so much they take an extra year of medical school and graduate in 2019? 😉

could have sworn i heard "quinoa"

oh and hi milksi 😀

You are all very convincing. I think at this point we all agree that the best course of action is just to re-apply next year, so that you can join wholeheartedly & me? 😛

I still think you'll be contacted before this cycle ends, but if not, you're actually in a pretty good situation. Your grades and mcat are superb, you have a good background story and your only known weaknesses are already being actively addressed. Keep sticking with the EC's and you'll be sitting pretty this time next year, maybe even in 10 months and two days from now. Plus, you're in Texas right? Geezus 😀

Who, me? 😀 I agree with just anything, I am in a pretty good position for the next year and this time I will be the first to click that submit button on AAMCAS.
Except, I am very much not in Texas - not sure where you got that from, confusing with Amygdarya maybe? Anyway, I am in Seattle, which makes things slightly more complicated. 😉

Sorry, no idea where I got that from. Yeah it does make things slightly more complicated but you're still fine if it comes to it 😛
No worries, after all, I have been to Texas, for about two days. So you are not 100% wrong on that one. 😉

Rejected from one of my top choices today, pre-interview. But also had an interview a few days ago at another top choice, and absolutely loved it. I've also decided to withdraw from the other schools I haven't heard from yet, thereby ending my interview season.

The Inca prized it above other grains for its high midi-chlorian content.

We can agree on a compromise: some of us will graduate in 2019, so we can apply to residencies together with next year's medical school applicants 😉
Speaking of which... can you imagine having to go through this AGAIN??? (and again, and again if you consider fellowships and attending positions)

I think most people get rejected from at least some, if not all, of their top choices - and you have already interviewed at at least one of your top choices! In any case, I love your attitude.

:uhno:
I'd rather not wait until my preferred specialties turn into the next derm/rad onc.

I'm actually not targeting any of the ultracompetitive specialties (well, at least that's what I think now), but I'm interested in academic medicine, so doing an extra year of research/clinical training in medical school makes sense for me.

Yeah, probably. I don't know. I'm not targeting super competitive specialties as it stands now, but that doesn't mean they won't become more competitive in the future.

Moar news: II to NYCOM. Withdrew because they're not 90k (YA RLY) per year cool.

On the plus side, with this II I reached the number of interviews I was hoping for, so I call this a win.

I must have missed it, but you must have an acceptance if you are withdrawing from schools!

Too bad about the rejection but congratulations on being over with the interviews!

Midichlorians? The ones despised almost as much as Jar Jar Binks? 😛

As long as there is a decrease in the overall number of BS essays that I have to write, I think I can handle it. Eventually, I'll be old enough and senile enough not to remember the previous application anyway. 🙂

👍 That's the attitude
Speaking of growing old, I wonder when does the time start when I stop hating to get up early?

Sooner than you expect. :whistle:But you will grow a new fondness of afternoon naps. 😉

Yes indeed. 65k vs 90k makes the decision incredibly easy. I can only think of one school that's more expensive that I would seriously consider. A couple others are in the running because they're even cheaper.

Just scored a non-resident tuition waiver at Minnesota! Thrilled and incredibly honored right now
Congrats! Besides the reduction in tuition, it's nice to know that the school you love really loves you, too 🙂

Awesome, congratulations!

Is that merit based or did you have ties to the state?
Merit! I'm really quite flattered. I knew they gave these out but i couldn't count on one.

Congrats. Perhaps we'll bump into each other at some point. Though,to be honest, I'd rather bump into you at CCLCM. Lol

Haha, yeah we'll see about that. CC is a great program but it's only half the story for me. I think Minneapolis >> Cleveland in terms of cities to raise a family. It's not a concern right now as they didn't accept me.

Thanks. That really hits the nail on the head. Enforces the touchy feelies that i got on interview day 🙂

When I think about school selection, it seems like it ultimately comes down to touchy feelis for me, too... now, all I need is to get accepted there 😀
But seriously, I do believe in intuition or that thing Malcolm Gladwell described in Blink; not as some mystical phenomenon, but rather some kind of a background cognitive process that makes a decision for you before you even realize it.

I feel the same way. I was having fun making up categories and ranking schools and then giving them a weighted average to see what I came up with and I noticed when one school wasn't #1 I was disappointed. Pretty easy to see which school I actually favored.

Not quite the same but someone told me to do this for a few residency programs I am torn between

They said to write the programs name on a piece of paper for each one the place them all in a hat. Then have someone else who knows you really well pick a piece of paper at random and read the name to you. Your own emotions at that time as well as the other persons judgment of your reaction can help you differentiate between one and two.

I can't wait to get my w-2 so I can apply for financial aid! I feel like it will be a big part of the decision making process. I am lucky to have such awesome schools to choose between but I can't imagine actually picking one and turning down the others.

I'm also waiting for my W-2s... not that I have to make a choice between schools, at least not at the moment, but I just want to get this out of my way.

Meanwhile, I just got rejected by a school from which I withdrew 2 months ago (and actually received an acknowledgement of my withdrawal from the Dean personally). And to top that, this was the most condescending rejection letter I received, something along the lines of "in my experience, reapplicants are more successful when..." - I'm not kidding. Hey, medical school X, I rejected you before you rejected me and I did that precisely because I got accepted by a school I liked more!

That absolutely begs for a "Dear School, in my experience, successful schools are known for ... Good luck in your future evaluations." letter. 😉

Do they stop and think about how these things come across before they send them?

One I heard over in a residency forum to pick you top choice was, flip a coin, while its in the air you'll know which one you're hoping for.

Well, today was a weird day. Waitlisted at yet another school (sigh) but we had a paper accepted at a very high-impact journal. I think I'm happier about the paper than I am sad about the waitlist, so I'll count this as a win.

....the wait until March for the non-rolling schools is still killing me, though.

Well, I'm kinda sorta trying to play nice, so I won't name the school 😉

Congrats on the paper! Very high impact, huh? I'm kind of jealous 🙂 It'll make a nice update for those non-rolling schools.
And a waitlist is a waitlist (shrug), I'm sure you'll have plenty of good schools to choose from.
