2014 Nontrad Applicants' Progress Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I pretty much agree with everything you said. You need to be memorable, but leave the reader wanting more. Less is more in a personal statement, because you don't want the reader to be bored at all.

I found strangers who knew nothing about me and had them read mine for feedback. I also took it to the HR department at my hospital and got their feedback on whether or not reading it would make them want to meet me.

Get as many different eyes on it as possible and take the criticism with a grain of salt. What one person loves, another will not.

Just don't be forgettable. An advisor told me if, after the first 2 sentences he wanted to keep reading, it was a success.
That is a good idea. I should take it to HR at the hospital where I work, They do have a career thing there. They told me they wanna send their employees to med school cause the chance of them coming back and work for them is high so theyre willing to take the risk! Hm thank you!

How's your cycle going? I hope well!

It has been great, thanks for asking! I applied early decision to my top choice state school and was accepted. I've been twiddling my thumbs anticipating matriculation since September.

Good news! My wife and I put an offer in on a house and it was accepted!

...I'm excited about not renting and terrified about escrow all at the same time!

Oh wow that is fantastic!!! Congrats! I am truly glad to hear that!

I wonder when the non trad peeps will start reading stuff for this coming cycle lol

Georgetown sent me a postcard encouraging me to apply to their SMP.

Hey Amygdarya,
She is doing great. The surgery was a success, and she is a healthy baby now.
Thank you for asking. You just made my day 🙂
Awesome! Really happy for your family!
Does it mean you'll be able to compete in the Olympics... ahem, apply to medical school next year? 😉

Got a scholarship yesterday that amounts to ~1 year of free tuition. Pretty happy about that!

On the other hand, still haven't filed taxes/filled out FAFSA because my insurance company mailed my proof of health coverage to the wrong address.

I knew exactly what it was the moment it arrived in my inbox, so I tried to outsmart them by instantly deleting it. A minute later, a second rejection arrived. They have outsmarted me AGAIN.
I'm sorry, I know it's not particularly funny from your point of view, but I couldn't resist laughing.

I got two, but one of them came up as blank. It was odd.

That explains it. Everyone I know who got a rejection from them today received two, your explanation must be the reason why they sent two.

Just in case we didn't get the message across the first time, we really really don't want you.

That would suck.

Hofstra. Rejected. Don't care. But kudos for the nice rejection letter. Georgetown could learn something from them.

I got waitlisted at my top choice program (the chances of coming off the waitlist are minuscule). This one hurts.

Thanks a lot guys! This was really unexpected.

I guess an advice I'd like to give to anyone applying to medical school is to keep your expectations low, because if your results exceed your expectations, it's great, but if not, it sucks. The problem is, of course, that it's so so hard to keep low expectations sometimes 😛

Hi All,

Im 26yo, former research scientist in LTR with 2 pseudo-stepchildren and a dog. 3-time applicant, raised 2.9 ugrad GPA to 3.5 in gradschool; raised MCAT from 17 to 25.
Applied for FAP for AMCAS and AACOMAS, so apps and secondaries = $0
I got accepted to my top choice back in October (withdrew OOS and didnt care about any other rejections!).
Now on to freaking out about loans, boards, and residency!

Got an II to a school I wasn't expecting to hear from at this point. Definitely going, and turning it into a much needed relaxing weekend/vacation.

Awesome.

The perk of being early decision is not having to worry about interviewing again; the downside is not getting anymore exciting emails.

Wash U rocks! ( I went for UG and did research there--love it). So you're going?
Congratulations!
Thank you orthogenes! It certainly does! (Alternatively, WashU rules, as the rulers we got in our interview packets say 😛) Everyone I know who's ever been associated with WashU (student, researcher, resident) loves it. It's highly likely that I will go there.

I can't wait to get financial packages so I can make a decision. I am so curious about where my family and I will be in July!

I'm curious about that, too! 😛🙂 Once again, congratulations and hope all the practical things work out for you in the best possible way!

I'm at the point in my cycle where I'm turning down acceptances and releasing those seats that I know I won't take (even though I didn't get financial info yet on some schools). Doing this mostly because my social conscience wants those seats to become available to my fellow applicants. But each seat given up feels like giving up a possible future. Such a shame one can only live (and attend medical school) in one universe out of the many alternate universes!
