2015-2016 APPIC Internship Interview Thread

Still waiting on Portland.

Me too. The brochure says notification by 12/11/14, but that could be a type-o on the year or maybe just not changed from last year. APPIC says 12/15. Either way, I was hoping to hear from them by today so I could make some travel plans (and I'm just terribly impatient right now)

Oh I didn't notice that. I was thinking today was their deadline too. I'm impatiently waiting to hear from them

I am also terribly impatient.

Still waiting on a number of sites like many of you! Hang in there! We can do this! Only a few more days!

Anyone hear from Bedford VA/Edith Nourse?

Any news on Portland VA?
Bronx VA?
Napa State Hospital?
Sutter Health?

The suspense! The suspense!

Still waiting on Napa, seems like they usually send out invites 12/15 or 12/16. Anybody hear from Mt. Sinai Services/Elmhurst Hospital Center? I'm getting confused with all the Mt. Sinai variations!

Anyone else not able to open the email from Porland VA??? It says I need IE! I don't have a pc!!!!

Hi y'all

Anyone hear from University of California- Santa Barbara? I don't see it on the list, yet see all the other UC Univ's.
Also, any news on Northern Illinois University? I was really hoping sites wouldn't go until the bitter end =/

Feeling frustrated at probably having to wait until at least Monday to hear from more sites. Still waiting on 6. Two have late response dates and two are already listed on this site as having sent out invites. I'm in a good spot with 9 interviews, but just ready to be past this part of the process and KNOW! Just thought I'd share instead of annoying my family and friends (again)!

Just to add a bit of perspective here, our site was going to wrap it all up last Thursday, but then one of our faculty had a file that she was finding very difficult to make a decision about. This requires a second review from another faculty. We actually have alot of staff on vacation at moment (its Disney cruise season). It was then given to me, the assistant DCT, by the DCT. Thursday afternoon I had a cluster of emergent patient issues. Friday, my son was sick, so I stayed home so my wife could work. It will get done tomorrow.

Moral of the story being that the review process is laborious and life can get in way for us too. The review process is typically not carved out of our schedule or done in bulk in an after hours meeting. As long as we meet the Dec 15th deadline, I think we have done a pretty good job.

What is nuts is that I worked as a school psychologist in Illinois prior to going back to school...rejection from my home state burns!

UGH! One of my top sites was supposed to get back to us yesterday. AND NADA. Nothing either way. I guess I'll wait until Monday. But still. I was so excited to hear back from them!!!!! :arghh:

Hello all 🙂 I have a question about optional open houses...are they really optional? I don't think it's going to make sense for me to attend an open house financially or logistically, but I don't want to be seen as less interested in the site. I really appreciate that some sites are making visits optional and offering interviews via skype or phone, but I worry that on some level they would hold it against applicants who don't make the time and spend the money to go. TIA!

I have some colleagues at 2 different sites that do open houses. Their ranks are essentially set before the open house based on application. The only way ranks change for them is if someone does something wildly inappropriate during the open house. But, from what they tell me, it's pretty rare. Just an n of 2, so take it for what it's worth.

When I applied, I declined the one open house invite I had. Would have been too expensive and would have made my travel schedule very hectic due to distance factors and what not. If you've got plenty of interviews and it's down your list, no harm no foul. If you don't have many, or it's in your top 3 or 4, I would go.

That's helpful, thanks! I have been lucky to snag a good amount of interviews, and the site isn't in my bottom but it's definitely not at the top either.

Ugh, Monday and Tuesday are going to be a blitz for those of us still waiting to hear back from sites. But don't forget, everyone, that sites can notify people even past the 12/15 APPIC recommendation. I have 2 sites that say they will notify after, so don't forget to double check those notification dates.

I recognize that this is a slightly crazy question.... Does anyone know, when APPIC publishes its stats about interviews and placements, does two interviews for two tracks in one consortium count as one interview or count as two interviews?

It was a silent week on the internship front. And then it happened....the rejection from my top site.

Oh hello, adult grape juice. It's been awhile.

Totally feel your pain. Same thing happened to me last week. It hurts! I hope it's true that everything happens for a reason.

Quality time with kitties and a glass of wine in the evenings have been helping me push through.

I am also a licensed school psychologist who has competed by Ed.S. internship and worked as a school psychologist but still has to do a Ph.D. internship and have found it nuts that I've been rejected from several school psychologist preferred placements in Texas. What people on this forum have told me is that it's possible the site determined that you are "overqualified" meaning that they have nothing to teach you and therefore won't offer you interviews. So I hear you, the rejections burn a lot, but I guess it might be because you're just too awesome for them? Maybe that helps, maybe that makes you more mad, for me it's a little of both. I did end up getting a few though, hopefully you will as well!

These stats are based on a self-reported survey. Not all applicants fill it out, and those who do answer based on their interpretation.

I got two interviews so far; one of which was in a school district, but also offered opportunities such as at a hospital. The other was more of a community-based site. It is frustrating because it's like I'm too school for the school-based placements but not enough clinical for some of the other placements like in hospital settings.

cosign, exactly my problem. I posted a ranty complaint about this a few pages back on this thread.

Hey everyone,
Thank you for posting the updates. It is very helpful but also discouraging because many of the sites listed here I applied to and haven't heard back from (either with an invitation for an interview or a rejection), why is that? Should I go ahead and email them? I know that most sites have till the December 15th deadline but I am noticing some of their notifications went out weeks ago...

Has anyone heard from Southeast Human Service Center in Fargo? (APPIC # 1789)

I received an invite from a site almost a full month after I saw them show up on here. It really is impossible to know, and is different for most sites. I've been in that odd limbo for a surprising number of my sites, and have gotten good news from half of them, and rejections from the other half.

This is the pot telling the kettle not to stress, but... don't try to read too much into it. And don't email until after their posted notification date, at least in my opinion.

Good luck!

Edit: Also, from the APPIC Match Coordinator: "It is important for applicants to understand that Training Directors work very hard to meet this notification date, and notifications can sometimes arrive at the last minute. Furthermore, some sites don't send all of their notifications out on the same day. Applicants should contact a site to inquire about their interview status only if they haven't heard from that site by the end of the day on its published interview notification date. Applicants should never make assumptions about their interview status with a site until they have received the notification from that site. In the event that you don't receive an interview notification in a timely manner, then (1) check your "junk mail" or "spam" folder to see if it ended up there, and/or (2) contact the site the day after that site's interview notification date to inquire about your status."

No, just sit tight, they will contact you soon enough. If their deadline is December 15 wait until December 16 to contact them.

Anyone waiting to hear from SHARP healthcare in San Diego.
Also anyone heard about the PTSD tracks from Phoenix VA? I know sms hasn't received any emails about it, but I know a ton of action happened Friday so just wondering if anyone overlooked emailing her

Sharp's notification is listed as 12/16. We've got time!

For those who went on interviews before -- when you bring copies of your CV, did you have to give it to every single interviewer? I found that most people had a copy already and the transaction of asking them if they needed one was almost little awkward...

Haven't heard from either! This week should be interesting...

I haven't interviewed yet but maybe you don't have to ask them anything. Just give them a CV if they request one or you could pull a copy/copies out and leave it as a reference beside you. If they really want one, I'm sure they'll ask.

Thanks! I just thought it was odd to randomly offer a copy of a CV once you developed a good flow of conversation. Maybe I'll bring copies in case they ask for it, but not just randomly offer them.

I agree with hamsterpants...in my experience, interviewers have the CV in front of them. It helps to have one if they do ask, but it's not too common. You're going to be great!
