2015-2016 SUNY - Buffalo Application Thread

If I remember correctly, their waitlist has 3 tiers and usually they go deep into their 3rd tier but last year they only went halfway into the 3rd tier.

That means that most people get off the wait list. Don't lose hope, guys!

To clarify, three tiers with tier 1 being the "top" candidates?

They use the tiers but they choose to no longer disclose that info to interviewees

+1.
IS LizzyM ~70 with IIs at other SUNYs. Slightly confused by this.

+1 also complete in july, interviews from other sunys
they review out of order (and emphasize its randomness) so don't stress!

that said, has anyone withdrawn from this school and mind pointing out where it is online? or if you have to call/directly email them?

I've heard that UB typically goes through a lot of its wait list, so you still do have a decent shot. However, they've gone through less of the wait list in recent years. I think last year the top third of the wait list was accepted which was less than usual.

Still a fair amount though!

II today. Complete 10/19. OOS applicant. Interview for 11/18. For students who already interviewed, how was the student host experience? Would you recommend it over a hotel?

I know that for the class of 2018 the waitlist made it to the very top of the 2nd tier. They used to accept nearly 70% off the waiting list, but has changed to about 40% with the insane costs of private medical schools and the news of UB 's new medical school building. Also, many of you may not be aware but Roswell Park just added a large Clinical Science Center to their hospital and Women and Children's Hospital is moving to a new state of the art facility on the Buffalo/Niagara Medical Campus 2017, in time for your clinical years. UB Med will be connected to Conventus which will be attached to Childrens which will be attached to the Gates Vascular Institute/Buff Gen which sits on the same medical campus as Roswell Park and the Roswell and Hauptman Woodward research buildings. So basically it will be one large and comprehensive downtown medical campus.

I got a interview 11/4. Anyone mind sharing their interview experiences, types of questions asked and other information about the interview day?

They ask a lot about your ECs, no curveballs at all. The best thing to do is relax and be yourself. They want a sense of your personality and to know that you really are the person you say you are on paper. You got this far, now just try to learn about the school and enjoy the day as much as you can. No stress required.

just curious if anyone knows if they are receptive to pre-interview updates

Nah. They're not receptive to pre-interview updates. Here is what it says at the bottom of the secondary application email from Mr. Rosso -

"CANDIDATE UPDATES, RECOMMENDATIONS, GRADE REPORTS & ADDITIONAL INFORMATION sent DIRECTLY to us by email or by US mail are ONLY used if the candidate is invited for an interview. THOSE UPDATES ARE NOT USED DURING THE INITIAL REVIEW PROCESS TO DETERMINE WHO IS INVITED FOR AN INTERVIEW! We ONLY use the AMCAS material. Therefore, DO NOT send us update material until after you are invited for an interview. (if you are invited)"

ah thanks, I read the complete emails only before posting, had to dig a bit for this.

Hi guys! Another current M1 here.

Congrats to those who have gotten acceptances! And for people on the waitlist, hang in there. There's quite a bit of waitlist movement at this school.

Feel free to ask me any questions either here, or via PM.

Had my interview here already, and my experience was a bit different than what everyone else posted so far. They asked absolutely nothing about my research (1 pub, ~3 years), nor my time out of college as a non-traditional applicant. Both interviewers were heavy on "what would you do if ... /how would you handle ...." questions, which essentially tested my knowledge of current issues and how I would solve them, but the emphasis seemed to be on their seeing your thought process, your priorities, and whether you really want to do medicine.

It was metrics-blind (interviewers have everything on your AMCAS but your GPA and MCAT) so at this point my 3.9999 GPA was worth nothing - to me, the interview process seems to be such that the two interviewers pretty much give you a yes, no, or waitlist independently, and if they agree you don't need a 3rd interview. They also said that they already know your acceptance status by the next day (probably 5 minutes within the end of your interviews) but there's some delay in updating it on their website.

lol as an OOS student, I regret applying here....

tuition is CRAZY. unlikely to attend interview even if granted one.

If I remember correctly, you can apply for NY residency after your first year and pay IS tuition for the next three years. Not sure about the "apply for residency" part, but you'll qualify as an IS student starting your 2nd year.

You can switch to being IS after one year, if I remember correctly. The estimated housing cost is also very high in the COA table they have in their website; I know for a fact that you rent a house with roommates for less than $1000 a month per person. Way less.

Hey man. I paid my deposit and signed that sheet. Was there something else I had to do to "hold my spot"? I too am a UB undergrad. So I'm good with the UBIT thing, correct? Am I too late now lol?
Nah, I think you're good! Just double check the e-mail they sent with your UBIT and stuff, there's a link there to GrAdmit so you can verifythat your UBIT and person number are good to go.

There were 3br houses you can rent for <$900/mo. Not sure how rent is elsewhere, but coming from the city this is a huge drop in rent (~$3-5k for 2br apartment)

If you want to make sure, you can call GrAdMIT (I think this is how you spell it, despite the wording in the acceptance letter) and they'll look over your application. They put my worries at ease.

Out of curiosity, is Buffalo one of those schools where it's much better to interview much earlier rather than later? I know they mention that the review process is random, but I was wondering if anyone had any further insight to offer? Thanks 🙂

No. On my interview day, Mr. Rosso mentioned that even if you interview on the last day and you "deserve" the acceptance, they will accept you right away.

Are you studying at Buffalo? Mind if I pm some question as they come up?

Yep, current M1. Feel free to PM any questions. We've got a bunch of exams coming up in the next two weeks, so I may not be able to respond right away, but I will get back to you eventually.

Curious to know as well. Haven't heard anything from here yet
i am pretty sure this is one of those schools that does silent rejections. I mean no communication for 3 months on my end. Pretty obvious. With other schools, at least they sent me something.

edit: low VR score plus OOS double whammy lol

I am a frequent SDN onlooker who finally made an account. To ease (or perhaps, to enhance) your worries, UB does not silently reject. If you take a quick glance at last year's thread, the axe started swinging on December 2nd. If it helps, I am a Buffalo native and UB graduate and I have not yet heard a peep (complete since July). The application process is unpredictable and, at this point, out of your control. Sit back and enjoy your life...Christmas cookies are coming.

Thank you. I feel special to be your first SDN comment/post!! 😀

Hello all! Also a frequent onlooker and newly posting. Still hoping for an II, complete late July, IS, non-trad, and a Buffalo native. This program is my top choice so on top of constantly checking my email for that II :xf::xf:, I'm also wishing for snow to distract me:wideyed:

UB is my top choice as well. Also a (super) non-trad. I wish you (and everyone else) the best of luck! Always remember that it is "when", not "if", if you truly want it bad enough. I couldn't imagine living or going to school anywhere else than right here in Buffalo. Go Sabres!

A fellow hockey fan, eh? I interviewed last month and when we toured the simulation center, I noticed that a baby manikin in one of the rooms was wearing a kid sized Sabres jersey. It was pretty adorable. Anyway, best of luck to you, friend!

Waitlisted just now after interviewing 11/18. I LOVED this school, very sad I can't start planning for next year. I know that others have said that a significant number of waitlisted people are eventually accepted, are those primarily accepted in April or is there substantial movement before then?
