2015-2016 Virginia Tech Carilion Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Do ya'll think it's to late to add this school to AMCAS.
The school has such a small class size that they could easily fill it up with 3-4 interview dates. Don't know if it's worth it.
But I like the PBL portion of the curriculum.
Sorry to get to this so late: I don't think it's too late. They do interviews up until February and don't fill all seats until then! Good luck if you already decided (M1 here- interviewed in March bc snow day)

In the optional essay, should we explain any courses we obtain a C in? Also, should we be giving them updated grades there? Thank you 🙂

my general thoughts on this topic are the following:
1. Dont highlight your percieved deficiencies when you can use that time to celebrate your strengths and be your own advocate. If a school would like clarification on a past event, they'll ask and if they do, dont make excuses but instead highlight how you've grown from that experience.
2. GPA is such a wildcard in admissions. An "A" in one school does not equal an "A" in another or a "C" for that matter. A GPA can only give the impression that you took your overall academics seriously and really not much more. I figure, when you are sitting in front of an ADCOM on interview day, you are there for something so much more intriguing than what they saw in your GPA. Try to figure out what it was that made them interested in you and sell it!

VTCSOM Class of 2014

II here as well! LizzyM is 68-70 and I submitted my secondary in late August, but I can't remember if I was complete during the last week of August or the first week of September. It was around that time frame though! Excited 🙂

edit: received my complete email on 9/4!

MAJOR congrats to both of you! That's so exciting!
If you don't mind me asking, when were you complete? I'd just like to get an idea of where they are with applications 🙂
I was complete 8/6 (or that's when I got the email). And thank you!

Complete 9/14

OOS II, LizzyM 70-76

SS: September 1-5
SC: September 10-15

The odds of receiving an II from VTC and an acceptance to its tiny class size dissuaded me from submitting the secondary muuuuuch earlier. But, yeah. It's always gonna be 0% if you don't even try.

complete since 8/6.... Im feeling the same way hahaha

Any idea what % of those who interview are accepted?
Well past forums elude to having about 250 people interviewed. The presentation at the beginning of the interview also said about the same number. The presentation also said that they send out the acceptances (like 25-30) in batches for a few MMI sessions meaning they do rolling admissions. So using the August-September MMI sessions as an example, each interview date had about 40 people meaning 80 people total interviewed for those months. They only allow 25-30 acceptance for the August-September batch which they will notify us in November about those acceptances. So if you interviewed in August-September, about 31-38% of those interviewed get an acceptance initially so about 1 in 3 people. Those are good odds compared to other places. Now they don't reject you if you don't hear back in November (again using Aug-Sep as an example) you just get placed in a pool (not a waitlist pool) until later in the season where they will pull more acceptances to fill the class depending on who declines their acceptance offer. Since there's 250 people for maybe about 100ish offers, it's still a very good shot. After they pull from the pool, the remaining people will get placed on the waitlist depending on how they voted for you during the committee meeting. I hope that answered your question!

First time posting on this thread, but got an II on Tuesday! 🙂

Did they email you or call?
Also, is there anyway to check your app status through the portal?

They will send an email (I got an email) and no I don't believe you can check through the portal. I've interviewed here in August and the portal hasn't said anything new about any II or status change. It just said that I had submitted my secondary.

Thanks for the info! *refreshes email frantically*

Does anyone who has interviewed have any information on the reception hosted the night before? Or will they send more information as the actual interview date comes closer?

Thank you!

They email you the information about it a week or so before.

Hey, can anyone comment on how long it takes for VTC to check for letters and complete your file after receiving the "Your Secondary Application has arrived" e-mail?

It took about a week for me!

Anyone who interviewed already have any advice/info they'd like to share?

For those interviewing this weekend - are you going to the reception the evening before? Also, general appropriateness question: the reception is at the suggested hotel, where I am staying. Would you all fly solo to the reception? They say it's a reception for interviewees to meet faculty and students, but my significant other is driving up with me. I assumed SOs are probably not welcome, but thoughts? Or any locals that can suggest something for him to do/explore while I'm at the reception or interviewing the next day? Thanks yall!

Current M2 here: significant others are welcome at the reception-they have definitely come before and it is completely fine, the reception is just a casual meet and greet and everyone is very welcoming. I would recommend attending and talking to current students to get a good impression of the school! If anyone has any other questions just ask 🙂

That's so good to hear! Thank you so much! I know he is curious to hear what life is like for med students as well, so it would be a treat for both of us to hear from you all!

For folks who interviewed in August and September, do you guys think we might hear back today? I recall that they said acceptances would be communicated via a phone call, but at the September interview, I think that they said decisions probably wouldn't be released until late October or early November.

They told us in September that they wouldn't release decisions until November

Does Virginia Tech give out rejections?

Also, thoughts on their attitude towards letters of interest?
