Hello!

I tried to get a thread like this going earlier this summer but hopefully now that more people applied, there will be more response. In the spirit of two similar threads for 2015-2016 and 2014-2015 that helped me A LOT, I thought it would be great to have a thread like this to get the conversation going between Texas Applicants this cycle.

Here are my stats:
First time applicant
cGPA: 3.94
pGPA: 3.97-4.0
Last 60: 3.9
Science: 3.98

GRE: 153V, 160Q, 4.5AW

Hours: 83 outpatient ortho, 46 inpatient nursing, 36 inpatient neuro, 40 outpatient aquatic and 1 hippo therapy. Total: 206

EC: a couple of volunteering hours in diverse local organizations, small group leader in a christian organization, Cultural ambassador, orientation leader for the office of international program

Rec: 2 PTs, 1 prof, 1 supervisor

International student from the Republic of Congo

Applied: 08-10, verified 08-22
Applied to: TWU-Houston, Texas State, Angelo State, UTMB and UNT

** latest update (Dec. 2nd)**

Interviews:
UNT (09/30)
UTMB (11/04)
ASU (11/11)
Tx State (11/18)

Acceptances:
TWU (10/07)
UNT (10/11)
UTMB (11/08)
ASU (11/17)
Tx State (12/01)

I feel good about my stats; I think now I want to focus on really showing the admission committee that I am more than just numbers and that I have a true and genuine passion for the field. I'm also hoping to hear from my top school (Texas State)

Has anybody applied/been accepted to these schools? Has anybody interviewed with UTMB and/or UNT and can provide some insight?

Cumulative GPA - 3.54
Pre-Req GPA - 3.22
GRE - 160 V/ 157 Q/ 3 W
350 observation hours - 1 outpatient, 1 inpatient, 1 acute care in-patient
Extracurricular activities - Veterans club member, Strength and Conditioning club member, ASCM Certified PT, actively employed as a trainer at a gym for the last year, will have my Certified Strength and Condition Specialist certification by December.

I'm in the process of taking Bio 2 and hope to get an A. I'm also re-taking A&P 1 as I got a C+ the first time (took over 4 weeks in the summer - mistake!) and I'm fairly certain I'll get an A as I took A&P 2 from the same instructor. I'm hopefully my pre-req GPA will go up a bit, but I don't think it'll be much.

I applied to these programs:
UNT
UTSW
UTEP
UTHSC - San Antonio - applied before early offer
UTMB - Galveston
Texas State

I'm applying as an out-of-state applicant, however, I was born and raised in Texas. I joined the military after high school and spent 4 years as a combat medic. I'm looking to move back due to free school (Hazelwood Act) and to be closer to family - which I mentioned in school-specific essays. I am a veteran and Texas State had quite a few question relating to veteran status, so I'm wondering if they give priority to veterans?

Submitted 9/3
Verified 9/8

How long after your verification did you get and interview offer at UNT?

Yes I remember the veterans question in the Texas State app.. hopefully it helps you out!! :)

I got the email from UNT that they received my application on Aug. 24th and I got the interview invitation on Thursday (Sept. 8th), so about 2 weeks later.

Slightly off-topic, but I worked in your country in the mid-1990s, before the fall of Mobutu. I thought I was living inside a "Mad Max" movie...

I applied to UNT as well as an out of state applicant! I too got an email that they received my application August 24th but didn't get anything about an interview so I guess I can go ahead and assume the worst.

My stats are:
cGPA: 3.88
Self reported pre req: 3.78
500+ hours of observation/internship
Highest GRE scores: 155 V & 146 Q (I hate math) 4.5 AW, even though they don't consider this

The only pre-req I don't have an A in for UNT is Physics 1 & 2, I got B's in both of those. Haven't calculated my last 60 hours but 12 hours (Physics 1 & 2 and Biomechanics) of the last 60 are Bs the rest are As.

Nooooo I wouldn't assume the worst, especially since I feel like you have really good stats!!

Also UNT interviews for the longest time, I think their last interview date is in February so it's still very early in the cycle for them.

Where else did you apply?

Oh wow really ?! That's awesome, especially since 9 times out of 10 people have no idea where my country is and never heard of it ahah.

You should definitely come again! I myself haven't been home in 3 and a half years but I know Congo has developed a whole lot since the mid-90s and we now have a lot to offer :)

I'm from Georgia so I applied at all but two programs in the state! I just figured since they had rolling admissions I would've heard something by now, but it is still very early.

I'm a senior at Sam Houston State; what about you?

I am a senior at Rice University.
Major: Kinesiology Sports Medicine
cGPA: 3.71 (3.74 according to Rice)
self-reported pre req GPA: 3.63 (got a B- in Chem I including lab and a B in physics I lecture only)
Last 60 hrs GPA: 3.85
GRE: 150 Q, 150 V, 4 AW (never have been great at standardized tests, but it's only slightly lower than the average at TWU)
Hours: 145 outpatient (pediatrics, neuromuscular, orthopedic, sports medicine), 21 inpatient (neuropathy)

Extracurricular: I play volleyball at Rice University so that takes up about 22 hours a week or more depending on travel. I have volunteered at the Houston Food Bank, volleyball clinics, and Alumni Golf Fundraisers. I also have honors such as President's Honor Roll, Honor Athlete, Arthur Ashe Jr. Sport Scholar, and Jameson Fellow of American Decorative Arts.

Recommendation letters: 2 PTs and 1 professor in major. I expect all of these to be pretty great letters as I have gotten to know all of these people very well.

Applying to TWU and UNTHSC (#1 choice).
My application was submitted 9/5 and verified on 9/11. The schools received the application today.

I'm pretty nervous because my pre req GPA isn't as high compared to the others on this forum, but it isn't necessarily bad either. The B- in Chem is what really brought it down.

UPDATE 12/13
Accepted to TWU Houston

Update 1/10
UNT interview (2/3)

Update 2/21
Accepted to UNT

Is anybody going to the UNT interview in 2 weeks?

Thanks! Do they do the interviews in waves typically? I was hoping I would hear back from them as quickly as you, but I don't know if I'll be quite as lucky.

It's true that your cGPA is more on the low end but your others are GREAT! Have you thought about applying to Texas State (San Marcos) ? they only look at 3 GPAs: Pre-Req, Math&Science and last 60 hours; which would make you a very strong applicant. I met with an advisor/admission committee member and was told that so I'm very sure of this information.
Their deadline is on October 3rd so that's 2 weeks away which would give you time to write their supplemental essay if you wanted. Also they don't do rolling admission so even if you apply on October 2nd you would have the same chances as someone who applied a month ago :)

Yay Texas school folks! I'm glad I found you. Thanks for starting this thread, beyoutiful_sunshine.

I have an interview with Texas Tech coming up.

You're very welcome! Hopefully we can help each other :) Congrats on scoring an interview! When is it?

My interview is this Friday! Please wish me luck!

Good luck on your interview !! Let us know how it went!

I think you have good stats and a good chance at scoring an interview with Texas State. I met with an advisor/admission committee member and she was telling me how they use a graduate formula to select their interviewee and in terms of GPA they only look at math&science, last 60 and pre-req; SO you're definitely a strong applicant :)

I know Texas State won't start looking at applications until Oct.3rd as they don't do rolling admissions and we most likely won't hear from TWU until they make their decisions in December so we're in for a long wait, lol

Has anyone attempted to email the UNTHSC dpt admissions office? I emailed them about a week ago with a question and they still haven't responded so I just wanted to see if anyone else here is having a similar problem.

When does tx state send out interviews?

I called a while back asking if they had rolling admissions and the answer was no. So since their deadline is coming up in 2 weeks (October 3rd), I'd say we won't hear before then.
According to their website, their deadline to notify applicants of interview status is November 4th and their interview date is set up for November 18th.

Wow! You have great stats and LOTS of hours :)

Does anyone know if UTSW has rolling admissions or reviews apps after their deadline? I didn't initially apply to UTSW but I am thinking about writing their essay (already have one of them done) and sending it in. Thanks!!

Quick question:

For UNTHSC, do they only look at the last 60 hours gpa and the prerequisite gpa? I'm looking at their PTCAS file online right now and I noticed that they only address those two gpas on their GPA requirement section.

Thanks! That's really good insight. I will double check but I believe the only thing deterring me from Texas State is they measure Last 60 GPA only from your bachelor's degree (whereas schools like Angelo State and TWU take any post-baccalaureate). Mine was on the lower end but in a totally different curriculum since I'm non-trad. I may contact them to see since sometimes they have exceptions not listed on the website. Thanks again!

It's non rolling but their deadline is 12/1 so you still have some time. :)

Does anyone know if TWU requires you to send your official transcripts and GRE to PTCAS and THEN to TWU? I was confused when I saw the requirements... (I don't understand how you would request to send a GRE score with the same code to two things...) but that's alot of work!

Quick question:
For UNTHSC, do they only look at the last 60 hours gpa and the prerequisite gpa? I'm looking at their PTCAS file online right now and I noticed that they only address those two gpas on their GPA requirement section.

I think so, but I could be wrong!

Interviews: So far I have an interview at Tech this Friday September 30th!

Good luck! Looks like several people on SDN will be at that interview :)

When did you submit [email protected] PTCAS app to UNT. I am waiting to hear back.

Dai is right, my app got verified on the 22nd, and I got an email saying they had received my complete application on the 24th. I had sent the supplemental fee a while back, right after I e-submitted, but before it got verified.

Interviews: TX Tech 9/30

Congrats on getting an interview with Texas Tech! Good luck !!

Interviews: UTMB (12.9?)

Congrats on the UTMB interview! I'm interviewing there in November and I'll tell you how it goes.
And yes, I feel you! It looks like by december we should have heard from all of our schools but the wait in the meantime is a killer !!

bcbritton12 it looks like from the stats she applied 8/10 and verified on 8/22. Sorry if I just jumped in -- I don't know if you needed to know right away!
Guess I should have read it a bit more thorough haha sorry

PTCAS prereq's are low but they vary from school to school so some schools it looks a little better. Any encouragement or advice on how to strengthen my app for next year if I need to apply again. Just looking for what other people think about my chance of getting an interview.

My application is defiantly quality not quantity. Hoping I can convey the importance of my experiences (mainly my internship and personal training) at the current interviews. UTMB, Texas Tech, and UNT are my top three!

Does anyone have any advice for the upcoming Tech interview?

Yeah that must be quite a challenge.. have you thought about nursing homes that might have observation hours options during the weekends?

I think you stand a chance !! Your GPA is right around average. Your pGPA is a little bit on the low end, but not every school looks at it!
I see you applied to UIW, I know private schools have GPA ranges that are a little bit wider so that increases your chances. I hope you hear from a program!

Hey, I'll be at that interview too!

This may be a dumb question, but is bringing a portfolio/printed resume and transcript to an interview necessary. I know this is a required thing for business and job interviews, but wasn't sure about pt school.
