2016 Western University of Health Science

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
If anyone are starting their titer soon, i recommend doing your TB skin test later.

When I turned in my titer and everything, the health department told me I need another TB skin test between June and start of school....I have no clue if it's just me or every student.

Giving you guys a heads up if it's for all students.

Welcome Panda!
Thanks, wanttobepharm! Good to know that. I'll probably hold off on the TB test to be sure I only have to do it once... hate to have to come back a total of 4 times instead of the 2.

Do you have health insurance through Western or do you have your own? I'm debating whether to get my own private insurance. I'm not sure if it'd be cheaper.

I've actually thought about that and shopped around. Since I'm on my own so plans are way too expensive when compared to Western's school insurance.

I think the cheapest I've found is Anthem for $180 a month or something while Western came out to be $120 a month but included in school cost.

I had my company insurance when I did the titer but that sucker cost $600! wtfffffff I hope Western give us insurance in July so I don't have to pay for TB skin test.

According to the health insurance portion of the Western website (assuming you are c/o 2015), coverage ends June 1st

link here: http://www.westernu.edu/bin/students/health-ins-summary.pdf

Does that mean students go without health insurance from June-August? :\

And WHAT?!?!?! $600 for blood titers?! I am currently uninsured so now I'm wondering how much it will cost. 🙁

Yea students are responsible for the summer that they are not in school.

It was $600 for me but I've heard you can get real cheap titers for $200 or something. Not like $200 is cheap but compare to $600 it's pretty cheap.

Dont we all feel broke already before school even started?

Do your titers at a Junior College if you are attending one. They cost ~$18 per blood titer, and you have to test for 5 of them, giving you a total of $90. As for the skin TB test, you're suppose to get tested twice.

Tdap shots can be free if you search for local clinics around your area, otherwise they can cost ~$50. You can also ask the clinic if they offer blood titer services.

Good information, thank you for sharing 👍

do you guys know when the hold/reject/more acceptance emails are going out? good luck!

The reason why they told you that you would have to do it twice is because if you did it say now, the letter says the TB test has to be valid for your whole academic year (Aug-June). That means your TB skin test will "expire" by April if you did it in April, and then you'd have to do it again. I'm just going to do it now because I'm at a community college and it's only 5 bucks to get the forms over with! 🙂 Also, a lot of places require you to do two TB tests to be extra cautious. Most hospitals you volunteer at will make you do it two times, so I'm guessing since we'll be rotating in hospitals that this is why we need it done to follow hospital procedures. Lucky for me, I volunteer at a hospital so my annual will come up in June and it's free 🙂

I looked into Western's coverage, it's pretty minimal! I mean if you're a pretty healthy individual then I guess it's enough to get you by. Me, not so much, so I wouldn't personally use their insurance. You should definitely shop around though, it could be cheaper than you think!

I just received an email from western. I got placed on hold. I was from the 3/3 interview.

So does anyone have any recommendation on how to prepare for the interview 😀

dont rehearse too much. briefly think about what key points you want to include in your responses to the questions posted on SDN interview feedback section but dont memorize an answer to a question.

smile

using "um"s makes you sound genuine so using it once in a while is definitely okay.

lmao....so I guess this is how I got in....

didnt i tell you that when you asked me also?

i swear i tell almost everyone that. when someone asks you a question and you flawlessly answers it without pause is just weird.

Haha not sure, I think I asked you just generic questions about Western.

Lol believe it or not, I've seen people who have really good interview skills, so kickass, that they answer flawlessly and smoothly.

hmm i guess everyone is different then.

i never liked to give perfectly smooth responses and i did just fine. to each their own i suppose 👍

Haha I wish I talked smoother. Granted, shouldn't you have at least 2 responses, namely the "tell me about yourself" and "why pharmacy" well rehearsed before you go into the interview? I'm pretty sure the interviewer expects those answers to be smooth, since you and your passion for pharmacy shouldn't change much over the course of application period.

Has everyone from the 3/3 interview heard back yet? I didn't receive an acceptance or hold notice.

lol hm never thought about that! haha. thank you! any suggestions for that essay question =D and whether or not its an open or closed file interview?

true dat, those questions you should be able to nail.

so which school are you going to go? or you still deciding.

lol hm never thought about that! haha. thank you! any suggestions for that essay question =D and whether or not its an open or closed file interview?

I believe it is closed file since the interviewers did not have anything but a piece of paper with a billion questions on it and they randomly pick some to ask you. Also a scenario paper.

Hopefully things didnt change from interview to interview.

It's a closed file interview. For essay, practice your basic writing skills and think outside the box. That's all I'm gonna say.

so which school are you going to go? or you still deciding.

Still deciding. Too much push-pull forces. 😀

if all else fails, flip coins.

Fate of your future and career lies on a coin!

LOL that's what some of my friends are suggesting....
------
Future pre-pharm asks: "So why did you choose Western?"
Me: "Because I flipped a coin and it said so."
Future pre-pharm: "...Seriously?"

So does anyone have any recommendation on how to prepare for the interview 😀

The best piece of advice I can give you is not to rehearse, but, with that said, if you don't believe in the words you're saying, you're probably not all that convincing. Be confident in your responses, and don't bs them, tell them what your thoughts are on the topic honestly. The questions are made to be objective, so there are no right or wrong answers. None of my questions at my western interview were from the SDN interview feedback, except for the brief "Why western?"

I would also brush up on hot topics in pharmacy. You can find articles on debates. There are plenty, and more often than not (for me at least), these types of topics came up in my interviews (especially the controversial ones).

I don't know about the "um," and filler words, because in one of my interviews, the interviewer told me I was a breath of fresh air because I actually coherently pieced together answers without "like," "um," "well," "you know." Some people REALLY hate it when people add filler words because they think it sounds uneducated (not my personal opinion, but many people have told me this, so I've always taken these out of the equation during interviews just in case).

I think if you really need more time on an answer, or are unsure of what to say, the safest bet it just to pause and look like you're thinking. Another thing people are scared of is to admit they don't know the answer to the question. I was grilled in an interview about biochemical pathways for diabetic drugs, how gluconeogenesis worked, etc. And I was just up and honest and told them I wasn't going to bs my way through the answer, and answered it the best I could.

Another thing I would notice is your body language when you speak with people. When you're nervous, do you have any nervous habits like rubbing your hands, touching your hair, twiddling your fingers? If you have any of these, you should note that and when you see yourself doing it in the interview, just place your hands underneath the table.

Just have a conversation with them, be yourself, have key points for those questions most likely to be asked, and just be in the moment and appreciate it. You made it there for a reason, be proud of yourself, and try to set the nervousness aside.

Oh yeah, and eat breakfast 🙂 Haha.

I thought that was a little weird. I know for job interviews, you should definitely avoid saying those things. It shows a lack of confidence in your response. But I guess its acceptable in pharmacy school interviews since they want it to promote a "friendly" environment?

But the bottom line is, it really depends on your interviewers and how they perceive it.

Is there a c/o 2016 page on Facebook? Can somebody give me the link? 🙂 I'll have to check it out later since I'm at work, but I look forward to meeting my fellow classmates. :soexcited:

So does anyone have any recommendation on how to prepare for the interview 😀
I would suggest reading up on current topics at drugtopics.com. Out of all the websites I've been referred to by friends and fellow SDNers, this was my personal favorite because it laid out all the "hot topics in pharmacy" on the homepage for you to choose from…and the readings are relatively short. Also read up on the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act and how this impacts the future of pharmacy. I came into all my interviews knowing the fundamentals, the possible outcomes, and the controversy surrounding this law and my interviewers were impressed. If there is a hot topic in healthcare that you need to know, it's this one hands down.

Also, take advantage of the fact that you can take a notepad to the interview! I jotted down notes during the presentation given at the very beginning, which helped me generate very specific questions for my interviewers later in the day. My interviewers even let me refer back to my notepad to read off my questions.

Lastly, you get to walk down to the interview room with your student interviewer. During that short walk, get to know them a little bit. I asked mine where she was from and what she studied in her undergrad. It will ease your nerves and allow that "conversational" flow to happen during the interview.

and yes, definitely eat a wholesome breakfast beforehand... they only provide sugary snacks which in my opinion, probably would've left me feeling hungrier haha. Good luck!!

i was interviewed on 3/3 as well but haven't heard anything back, i'm guessing we are on the same boat : HOLD 🙁

I'm surprised that this many people are on hold....

I don't know what a "hold" truly means for Western, but in another school where I interviewed at, they told us not to take "holds" personally. It's not the student's fault. What it means (for that particular school) is that the professors interviewing the students were unable to attend the committee meetings (scheduled periodically) to make decisions.

Not sure if the same concept holds true for Western, but just sharing my thoughts. I feel sorry to all who have to endure this waiting game not in their control.

I think hold means they have not reached a decision during the committee meeting but could be wrong.

Eh, who knows? xD

"Applicants who are placed on hold after the interview will have their file reviewed at a later date (to be determined by the Admissions Committee). After the review, hold candidates could receive a letter of accept, alternate or non-accept," has multiple interpretations to it.

schools are playing hard to get this year. Western acts this way and USC acts this way also with their stupid new admissions process.

True that, true that....I personally didn't apply to usc, but I witnessed all my friends getting A/C'd. That's seriously some bad waiting game. How was usc's admissions last year different than this year's?

P.S. Anyone else from March 3 interview heard back this week???

weird.. when i e-mailed daniell, she said there won't be anymore acceptances til after this saturday (the last interview). Your friend just got accepted today (3/27)? Interesting.. I guess for those who didn't get an on-hold email .. maybe you still have a chance?

I think xubap meant that the friend got a hold email. I'm curious whether this second acceptance list is true or made by speculation. Guess we'll see tomorrow.

I spoke to her on the phone while updating my profile. (I emailed 3 times but no response, so I wanted to make sure all my reprequisites are updated)

If we don't hear from them by this week even if we are on hold, we can call and ask out status cuz they could miss emailling us.

No email or mail receiving up to this moment yet 🙁(
They are so slow for their response >.<

Yea I have not heard anything either. This waiting is a killer, I dont know if I should email or call because they said not to

Daniell finally replied my email, said the letter was sent yesterday and I should receive it soon.
OMG why didnt she just tell me my status via email as well??? Everyone who were either accepted or on hold were notified via email... So im worried now that it could be a rejected letter .... What a pain in the butt -_-

Has anybody on the "Hold" list been pulled off for acceptance???😕😕😕😕
