2018-2019 APPIC Internship Interview Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Yeah, I am super confused about that. I wonder if it would be wrong to send an email on Monday?
I will wait until 1/11 to contact them. I marked their 'tentative' interview date (1/19) in my calendar but can't do more than that. I'm also expecting a rejection there anyway...I just hate that it's hanging over my head.

I'm going to be asking about/listening for qualities in supervision that I am hoping for (frequent focus on taped sessions in supervision, for instance). I also value outcomes research being applied at sites, so I want to know how they monitor therapy outcomes and what they do with that monitoring. In terms of quality of life I also want to gauge somehow the cohesion on site between professionals and how collaborative their working relationships are. I definitely want to interview the site about how culture is integrated into training and what views does the site hold about culture. I still need to think about this a lot more myself so I pretty much saw your question, copied and pasted it into Word. You rock, thanks for sparking this.
I'm copying your list because you just did a bunch of brilliant work that I now don't have to...so thank you! I also 100% support the "gut feeling" score!!
Nothing that I can tell but can I steal this? :pompous:
I just spent like 15 minutes trying to adjust the weights I'm giving to each factor to get them to add up to 100 points (with the "gut feeling" score being separate). I thought y'all would appreciate that haha

Hey ! I'm not sure if you saw my post earlier, but I think you are a #NeuroSeeker and was wondering if you saw any statistics about the match rate to interviews for those going into pure neuropsych tracks. Trying to plan my odds here. Thanks!

I don't have exact numbers, but I can speak to the variability in this process. My labmate got 14 interviews to my 5 with 1 waitlist; this labmate had identical hours and only 1 more publication. So there's a lot that goes into this...

I can say that historically neuropsychology folks from my program have ranged from 4-10 interviews and all matched first round (n = 5-10 students).

I do know that this article (Selection criteria for internships in clinical neuropsychology. - PubMed - NCBI) by Ritchie (2012) describes the selection process well.

Neuropsychology has historically been really competitive. I had several TD's report in either invites or feedback that 50+ applicants had applied for a single spot! They invite 6-12 in most cases, meaning 80-85% of people get cut. That's nuts!

Sounds like you got some good spots, so I'm rooting for you and know you will kill it!

The only UCC that I haven't heard from yet is George Washington University but I know they sent out interview invitations a while ago, so just waiting on that closure email. C'mon GWU, don't ghost me, just break up with me face-to-face ... LOLZ.

Did you ever hear from them? I'm still waiting too. Its two days past the deadline so I really think they ghosted me

I didn’t hear from Ohio state either!

Are you talking about Wexner Medical Center? I received an invite from them on 11/29. Sorry, didn't realize no one had posted this one.

Ohio State University, Wexner Medical Center
Adult Psychopathology
Invite (interview dates: Jan 8, 12, and 19)
Mass email (with everyone's email address visible), 11/29/17 11:57 am
I'm not sane. We're all mad here.

This is also why I made an “alternative” account. Like the real world, there’s little room here for people to be having different experiences and reactions. The initial intent was not at all to be empathetic OR to be mean - it was simply to express my particular experience honestly without having to do all the ridiculous soothing and pussyfooting around people do here. Keep proving me right everyone !

😵

Can I get some opinions from #forumfamily ? I got a call from DHS-Napa asking about my having indicated a possible need for accommodation for the interview. I know they said they may not notify till 12-19 and they didn't say anything about actually offering an interview (just wanted to know what accommodation I would ask for). But the call really got my hopes up. Do you guys think it' a good sign or maybe just a part of their new screening process? I don't know if maybe it's part of some standard procedural thing that others can shed light on? Just feeling confused. Did anyone else get a call from them? Thanks in advance for your thoughts!

I honestly have no idea what that call may mean, I just wanted to say I can imagine all the "what if'ing?" that may be going on on your end and say I know how much of an emotional roller coaster that process can be. So hang in there! Hoping you get good news from them soon! 🙂

Thank you for posting this! I thought I was going insane and that they just ghosted all of us - I wish they had sent out rejections for the rest of us instead of just not contacting at all 🙁 Congrats to you though!!!

Thank you so much for that! And thank you for being a part of the kindness and support that makes forum amazing 🙂

Forum Fam.. does anyone know what a "roundtable" during an interview might be referring to? Group interview? Casual chat?

I don’t know but I hope thay you get an invite!!! One site emailed to ask me about my mistake on dissertation proposal dates (they require you propose prior to application) and when I responded I did she sounded very enthusiastic. One month later, interview offered. Crossing fingers for you!!!

Anybody remember the match rate statistics based on number of interviews? I can't find it on appic or anywhere else on the interweb..

Thank you so much!! That honestly helps a lot. Self-disclosure, but I applied to 24 sites, 6 interviews, but am the only student from my cohort wanting to do traditional neuropsychology. There were many students in cohorts before me that chose neuro, but I'm feeling lost with support/information from my program. #Dazed&Confused

Thank you so much for sending that article !! The obsessive compulsive personality disorder in me just whipped out a highlighter and am about to go to town -

Also what neuro person doesn't love a good Wiley Mittenburg article on a Friday night? #AmIRite? ha

Thanks again!

@happyamber8, are the numbers you posted from the most recent Match survey? These are from the 2016 survey. Regardless, they're not all that different, but wanted to post it anyway 🙂

Number of interview offers received:
1 to 2 interviews Match rate = 60% n = 236
3 to 4 interviews Match rate = 83% n = 392
5 to 6 interviews Match rate = 90% n = 451
7 to 8 interviews Match rate = 95% n = 455
9 to 10 interviews Match rate = 99% n = 368
11 or more interviews Match rate = 99% n = 495

Thank you! I'm sorry to hear they've ghosted you. Maybe there's a waitlist. I hope it works out in your favor soon (or they at least let you off the hook!)

Admittedly I have no solid reason to believe this, but I would think it’s a sign in the positive direction! If they weren’t interested why waste time with a call

Well, on a separate note... Is anyone having trouble signing up for UC santa Cruz interviews?

YES!! I replied to the TD’s invite to inform them of this and received no response. I’m really trying to stay calm about it but there’s only one day that works for me. Hoping this gets fixed soon!

Wow you guys I’m really bad at this whole forum thang. Didn’t mean to “quote” my response with Ddbinx’s. Basically the UCSC sign up is not working for me either.

K, so this back and forth looks fun... but on another topic, anyone who is traveling already: are REAL or enhanced ID's required for interstate flights at this point? In my state I know they aren't, but thankfully my brother had to text me this question and make my panic levels elevate to the orange level. (PS: Since the Omarosa thing was brought up, I saw this reaction to Omarosa on Seth Meyers' late night show)

Not until 2020. You're good!

So I'm trying to construct a list of different criteria to rate each site on after I interview, and I'm wondering if I'm leaving anything out: Training (clinical rotations, assessment rotations, ability to provide supervision, protected research, diverse populations, DBT component), Supervision (based largely off of number of hours for group and individual), facility (office space, access to other resources, multiple locations within a site/ease of traveling to them), quality of life (#hours work/week, specific billing hours to be met each week, taking work home (per intern report), do interns seem happy/respected?), living/city ("vibe", cost of living, weather, stipend, health insurance plan).

What am I forgetting that should I add?

I have a category for "soul bonding" which is ineffable for the most part... I guess it could be operationalzed as "gut feel" (?) might fall under "vibe" as well.
It was helpful to see your list - thank you for posting.

I haven't received a phone call from them-just the email yesterday. That being said, if they cared enough to contact you personally/ ask you about your accommodation needs, I'd think they'd have to be interested enough in you and your application to be seriously considering you. Otherwise, why would they waste their valuable time? Anyway- I'll keep my fingers crossed that it was a positive sign for you!

Returned from my first interview to find a whole lot a thread**** has been flung about... [Eric Cartman, narrating his internet presence voice] Frowny face. [/Eric Cartman]

I do believe affectiveh3art is making some implications about te competitiveness of UCCs, forumfam. On guard

I applied to 15 sites, all UCCs, and took zero issue with affectiveh3art's post. Don't think anyone else read it as some kind of veiled UCC slam, either: UCCs generally ARE less competitive as compared to other site types. Recall that you were the person with the buyer's remorse going on about not having applied to more competitive placements. This seemed like an effort on their part to understand where you were coming from and maybe put into perspective that 14 invites/1 rejection is not some sort of standardized unit of measure with which one can assess an applicant's worth, as many of the applicants with only a few or even zero invites are going up against higher (in some cases, MUCH higher) odds.

Ok but the fact is i got one rejection and fourteen invites #masterbaiter

Ok, but the fact is that I have an adequate sense of self-worth, such that I don't find it necessary to create a sock account on a message board to brag about my number of internship interview invites #TyPwonairisthatyou?

Well, on a separate note... Is anyone having trouble signing up for UC santa Cruz interviews?

Also, Im wondering if people have an idea about Baruch counseling center's interview /what it's like to intern there? Feel free to PM if you could share your thoughts or experience. Thank you!!

I'm having trouble with signing up for an interview at UC-Santa Cruz as well :/

I got both of these, too, interview twin! :highfive:

Congrats! Are you going in person rather than Skyping for MSU? Maybe I'll see you there!

I have one I hear from on the 18th and one that goes out on 1/2. It's not accredited and sort of a safety site, so not too worried about it. But I do want to hear from Western Carolina University. They look cool...

Western Carolina University is my last one. I agree, the multicultural training opportunities and the location make it really unique! I was super surprised that so few people applied there the past couple years, since it sounds awesome! I also appreciated that they sent a "materials received, this is our process moving forward" confirmation. #transparencyforthewin

The Room is AMAZING(ly terrible). Highly recommend watching it with a group of you can - I think it's more fun that way. Some places do Rocky Horror-type showings with call & response throughout, which is so much fun! And just last week Disaster Artist came out, which is about the making of The Room (haven't heard about how it is though). Its a good time to get into the following!

Seconded. The Room is something everyone should experience, probably multiple times. I've always loved unintentionally bad movies, and this is...it's just on a whole other level. I just saw the Disaster Artist and really enjoyed it--especially for the psychological/interpersonal elements. And James Franco is incredible in it. He becomes Tommy Wiseau like Jim Carrey became Andy Kaufman in Man on the Moon.

Besides- everyone’s path (invites) is soooo different. I could have applied to all UCCs and would have gotten 20 out of 20 interviews but instead I applied to highly competitive behavioral medicine sites. So I’m happy with my 6 invites. We all have different paths, goals, etc. we should be proud of what we have- regardless if it’s 1 or 20.

Oh thank goodness, I had a bit of a heart attack seeing those other numbers. Here I was, going along comfortable with my 83% chance...79% isn't actually that different, but it sure sounds a lot worse (to me).

Travel question time, for anyone else who is doing/has done a practicum at a VA: does anyone know if your PIV card can allow you to go through the TSA precheck line at airports?

Rumor mill says yes; one supervisor who hasn't actually tried it says doubtful. Another supervisor who HAS tried it says it does work as long as you don't get a newbie TSA agent. But I noticed that my student card looks different from the employee card, so I'm not sure if it would work for us.

tl;dr anyone have any experience using PIV cards at the airport?

I've heard that people have successfully done this, but I don't know that it's "supposed to be" the case. I once asked an agent in the security line if I could've used my VA ID. She told me that A) it wouldn't work for pre-check, and B) if I'd used it for the regular line, I would've had to present a supplemental form of ID. Not sure of the accuracy, but I wouldn't bank on it working.
