2018-2019 APPIC Internship Interview Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I applied to the same track and haven't heard anything yet. Was it a mass email?
So it looks like the rejections and the invites are being sent through personal emails. I just went back to November 17th where someone posted about an interview for the same track - Texas child study Center - Ped/integrated care and it was a personal email as well, thats probably why it is taking so long and why we haven't heard

Sanity: What's that??? +pissed+:boom:😆But seriously, without my wife, family, and friends supporting me and giving me the safety to be vulnerable, I'd be highly psychotic by now.

3 rejections 0 invites. Time to dig deep and find meaning and value in this.

A few sparring rounds at Krav Maga this week might restore some sanity too.

Girl, you are a freaking ROCKSTAR for taking this on! Thank you for all of your hard work and effort to appease us neurotic weirdos 🙂

Thanks for being a hero!

:biglove: my pleasure! It's one of those - "my whole life is a game of post-thanksgiving catching up right now" things😆

I did the updates for the post doc thread last year. I would put them in a .doc and cut and paste in case SDN crashed/closed while I was updating.

Clothes: I wore a black suit with comfortable, stacked-heel boots and a patterned shirt (sometimes collared, sometimes not). I found people wore all sorts of variations of professional clothes, including slacks and sweater sets, colored blazers that were a different color than pants, etc. Not a single training director seemed to be concerned (all VAs or AMCs). Having been on the other side of the application process, I could not tell you what a single applicant wore to the interviews at my internship site last year.

I applied to 15 sites, 5 of which were "safety sites" for me. I was rejected from every safety site and all of my interviews (8) were at more "competitive" sites. I had 6 or 7 rejections before I got an invite.

I found the post doc process to be more anxiety-provoking than the internship process. I missed the match process.

Haha, I just decided that it would be a good idea to do that this morning - it definitely sounds safer. Thanks for all your amazing tips and tricks!!

Well, there goes plan B for if I don't match to move to England and marry into royalty.:smack:

Haha! That could be a fun game. What is everyone’s (semi-fantastical) plan B —aka not the logical thing you would actually do but the “welp if this psychology thing doesn’t work out...”

Mine is run away to France and become a bread baker. Romanticizing waking up at like 3 a.m. to roll baguettes.

Run away to Costa Rica and work in gardens. Romanticizing being with the flowers.

Start an animal sanctuary! I currently live in an apartment and have no money but...somehow I would be able to buy a bunch of land, and supplies for animals, and make money off of all of that...totally realistic.

Fantasy plan B: costume designer (just now learning to sew, ha)

Also, just had to post in and say that one of my sites provided one local hotel recommendation... for a fancy resort... looked it up- it's $300 dollars a night... with many other more reasonable hotels nearby...I can't even... lol #tonedeaf

Uhhh... this is already plan E!!!

This is like my 5th career folks. I would probably go back to my last career and go back to my anesthesia job.

Hi, I don't know you, but I want to join in on this. I already have an arc of animals at home. I can also contribute really good baked goods. E.g., cocktail cupcakes.

Travel around the US in a van with my partner and my dog on an epic rock climbing trip. And then become a dog walker & trainer and surround myself with dogs all day, every day.

Reject 🙁
11/28 <- over two weeks since they first sent out invites! Talk about agonizing.
Personal email ~ 9 am
Sanity: decided my plan B is to ALSO move to Europe and maybe become a chocolatier. If you guys got the wine and bread covered, I think we have hit all the major food groups of grad students: carbs, alcohol, and candy!

But also, the email was like ‘no thanks on the internship, but please apply to here for post-doc’ so idk. I got FOUR rejections and ZERO invites so Plan B is moving forward. I bought ‘Wine Gums’ from the grocery store and was really disappointed to find out they WEREN’T alcoholic. Maybe we can figure out something, I’ve heard of wine ice cream!

I’m kind of devastated for you that wine gums aren’t alcoholic.

Umm, I just heard a horror story about well qualified candidate who did not match twice. They had good feedback from interviews, but she was in her late forties.
My DOT told me to avoid mentioning being an older student, but I was like...if they see I graduated college in 95, they may be able to piece that together. I'm 47. I look 47. I definitely do not come off as "moldable." I am at the top of my cohort academically and clinically. Any stories of hope regarding older students or others concerned about this issue...I would love to hear from you

I can’t speak to this personally but have known multiple older applicants to match to top choices!
And I don’t believe they did anything to hide their lives or selves either- I would think if they want “moldable” it’s more just whether you are open to training (which I’m sure you are!)
Don’t lose hope!

I think it’s ridiculous that they put this in your mind when it’s something you can’t control, especially right before interviews. There may have been any number of reasons that person didn’t match, and I doubt it is because of age after going through two matches. If you can, try to focus on the positive things you bring to a site because of your age. If a place is going to discriminate based on age, you don’t want to go there anyway.

Any rejections go out from the New Orleans and Pittsburgh VAs yet? I know folks got invites already. Thanks! Feel free to PM me privately.

There are 1-2 "older" students in nearly every cohort in my program. They always seem to match just fine. To my knowledge, they have never had issues with this.

Just remember, moldable and teachable are two different things. Sites don't want a jellyfish that let's waves carry them in which ever direction the wave pleases. they want someone who still wants to learn and can receive feedback and implement it.

You have a lot of life wisdom to offer, you have a well formed identity that is going to be more consistent than those of us still in our 20s. If your a mom or dad, you have a whole nuther' skill set that others just don't have. Pull on those stable and salient strengths only a 47 year old can bring and you will rock your interviews.

Also, don't try to act younger/look younger. It undermines all of those salient pieces I just said. Rock your own style, both clinically and personally.

I know of a rejection from Pittsburgh VA. Not sure what track or any information other than that though. I believe it was sent a couple weeks ago

I need some positive news right now 🙁

Yesterday I got TWO phone calls from numbers I didn't recognize, one with a DC area code (and I'm waiting to hear from a DC site...) - one was a wrong number, the other was my grocery order being ready for pickup. Why.

I would reallly like to hear from more places this week.

Sanity: Well, we all seem to have some solid plan B's....I suppose I could settle for a duchess position somewhere and use my newfound royalty currency to support everyone's wine, animal, and bread businesses 😉

I’m an older student and I understand completely how you feel… it was tough for me when applying to schools and now internship, feeling like I’m not this young, cookie-cutter psychologist. But that’s also what makes me different and valuable! And my younger cohort-mates all feel insecure about seeming so young… so it bites both ways.

As for not talking about your age on the interview, I mean… I can’t see a reason to announce how old I am. On the other hand, my previous career, the fact that I’m a father… if I leave those things out, then I’m leaving out a lot of what I have to offer! Any site that doesn’t want me for who I am doesn’t deserve me anyway.

I just heard the noise my email makes and my heart leaped out of my chest and I skipped a breath or 3

#conditioned stimulus
I never heard that sound yesterday so when I heard it this morning, I had the same experience (of course it was junk mail from Time2Track). I haven't decided which is more disappointing: never hearing the sound or getting denvered after I hear it.

Congrats! I also received an interview with Ann Arbor VA last Wednesday. Have they emailed you back to confirm a date?

Congrats to you as well! They have not yet responded to my email re: dates.

Also, has anyone heard back from Yale's Adult DBT track?
