2018-2019 APPIC Internship Interview Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I never heard that sound yesterday so when I heard it this morning, I had the same experience (of course it was junk mail from Time2Track). I haven't decided which is more disappointing: never hearing the sound or getting denvered after I hear it.

I just got #denvered by a time2track email as well

Invite!!!
11/28...this was almost 2 weeks after others had received invites and rejections...I had really prepared for a rejection here!
Mass email ~ 9 am
Sanity: Well, we all seem to have some solid plan B's....I suppose I could settle for a duchess position somewhere and use my newfound royalty currency to support everyone's wine, animal, and bread businesses 😉

I can totally see it...”bedraggled from months of refreshing emails and traveling to day long interviews doctoral students give up their dream of psychotherapy (assessment, research) and piles of paperwork and band together to fatten up the world and normalize animal hoarding (jk )”

Lol, my paranoia is working out really well for me in terms of not getting denvered by emails. I set up a brand new email account just to be safe. I didn't want there to be any circumstances where a selection committee member typed my email address into a Facebook search or something and found something I would rather they didn't.

I feel the need to reiterate again that I do NOT collect any royalties on acupressure mats hahah #acupressurenation
You should really do something about that. It's almost criminal at this point that you don't. 😛

And because the massive amount of food and wine must not go to waste, I will also be moving with you all, to be the taste tester

I have definitely put things online that I would not want selection committees to get their eyes on. I have a very "chameleon" personality type, which translates into many different selves in many different settings and circumstances. That will be true of me at any age and as an introverted homebody who is more comfortable and witty when I type than when I'm face to face in a group, I gain a great deal of value and enjoyment from my online interactions. I'm not willing to edit myself and put on my professional face in all internet interactions for a lifetime for the sake of these types of short circumstances.

So, I lock things down to the best of my ability at times like these and hope for the best. :fingerscrossed: Unless you've already recieved rejections to 100% of your sites, which I doubt, you could lock things down more now. Couldn't hurt. Unless you have lots of professionally relevant or personally charming posts. Then, I guess it could, lol.

First of all, Yay! Happy for you!

Second of all, UGHHH!!!! I also applied there, and I really am struggling with my anxiety due to some other stuff happening right now, and I have phone anxiety on a good day, and I want an invite from them, but I DO NOT WANT A PHONE CALL RIGHT NOW. :arghh::arghh::arghh::arghh::arghh::arghh::arghh:

Hear that, ASU CAPS? EMAIL IS GOOD! I'd love an EMAIL INVITE! Kthxbai.

lol nah there's nothing valuable on there
i've never had much of an online presence - they'd just see some pictures.
maybe i will go ahead and lock down now

Umm, I just heard a horror story about well qualified candidate who did not match twice. They had good feedback from interviews, but she was in her late forties.
My DOT told me to avoid mentioning being an older student, but I was like...if they see I graduated college in 95, they may be able to piece that together. I'm 47. I look 47. I definitely do not come off as "moldable." I am at the top of my cohort academically and clinically. Any stories of hope regarding older students or others concerned about this issue...I would love to hear from you

I would not worry about it at all. I have met and worked with several older interns and post-docs who everyone preferred because of their age. I am 36. I had professional jobs in college and for a few years after graduating. I was complimented constantly by supervisors, M.D's etc because of how I carried myself, my professionalism; they were always surprised I wasn't further along in my training (not because I'm so smart but because of my age, and my business experience). I think it is a big plus you are older, and I know a lot of people who would agree!

I received a personal email invite from New Orleans VAMC around 7pm EST on 11/20/17. Hope this helps!

That definitely helps with the perspective. I know they have them sprawled out over weeks at some points in time. I just haven't heard from them yet 🙁.

Denvered? What does that mean?
It's one of the many hashtags that's taken off in this thread. It's what we call getting a phone call from what you think is a site, but is actually either a telemarketer or wrong number. It's meant to capture the roller coaster of emotions that goes along with thinking you're about to get an invite, when really someone's just trying to sell you a "cruise vacation" that probably isn't real

edit: other hashtags include #bees #thirstyaf #WWMD (what would Mindy (from the Mindy Project) do?) #neverforget #acupressurenation. We're a super cool bunch here 😎

I messaged the OP who said they got the email around 8am CST yesterday morning. Apparently this track was super selective and only 14 people were asked to interview. I have a friend who applied to the comprehensive track who got an invite like 2 weeks ago. Definitely a bummer!

I just started applying getting #denvered to my email since that's where the majority of my notifications are expected. That rollercoaster, though... 😵

I just got for real denvered!!

VA Eastern Colorado Health Care System
Invite - general (I'm neuro focused though and they can meet Houston guidelines)
Personal call
Dates - 01/08, 01/22, 01/29 - will be sending out a doodle poll this afternoon with instructions to select only one date.

My new favorite way to pass the time is to watch old Vine compilations of people falling or otherwise reaping the consequences of attempting really stupid ****. It both makes me feel more intelligent, competent, and like I have a higher purpose in life AND distracts me from the pain of waiting. Highly recommend, y'all.

edit: it's also kind of inspiring and reassuring to see the amount of absolute nonsense the human body can (apparently) endure.

How many Denver sites did you apply to?
I meant the majority of my notifications will come via email rather than phone calls. As far as what I could glean from earlier years, only one of my sites has historically made phone calls. Which I appreciate because I think it will take an extraordinary amount of effort to maintain a steady, professional tone on the phone.

DoT: "We'd like to offer you an interview."
Me: "SQQQUUUUEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!"
DoT: "Hi, are you there? If you can hear me, I can only hear some sort of squealing sound. Hello, are you okay??"

As expected:

I was SO shrill on the one and only phone call invite I've received. I think I even said "oh my gosh, I'm so freakin excited" in what was probably a very convincing (although not intentional) Aunt Sue impression. I'll take emails any day.

Who needs Facebook when we have SDN?

But I do search my name and email addresses on the reg to see what information is available. But that might come from working with curious adolescents....

Did anyone else who got an interview at the Madison VA get confirmation of interview dates yet??

Literally me right now. I almost started an oil fire trying to make Yorkshire Pudding this weekend. My poor husband is traumatized. I should probably still to cookies.

I can't bake anything more challenging than a boxed mix or those pull apart cookies so you're ahead of me! I am wowed by the things people make on that show.

Ugh, I'm sorry 🙁 I'm waiting to hear from them as well. If you don't mind me asking, did you apply to the New York Presbyterian/Columbia site or New York Presbyterian Weill/Cornell site?
