2018-2019 APPIC Internship Interview Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
emotional mind sees APPIC list serve like "ADD APPLICATIONS TO AAALLL THE ACCREDITED SITES. YOU NEED MORE INVITES"

After I received the 5 rejections on Tuesday I applied to 3 more sites. I do have 5 invites (on Tuesday I did not) but it made me feel proactive and a little safer. However, I could get rejections from those places haha. This is all a giant crapshoot.

To validate, someone from my program interviewed at Emory a few years ago and didn't end up ranking them because they had some weird experiences during the interview that really turned them off. For example, in a one-on-one interview, one faculty member put her feet up on a desk and crossed her arms during the whole interview.

Weird!! Thanks for the validation. 🙂Yeah that rejection really got to me at first. I read the letter to my supervisor, and he spent the rest of the day insulting Emory for me. (And he has killer insults, let me tell you!) It was so amazing--this is why we all need good people in our lives.

I'm sorry - what?! I had a prac interview where the supervisor came in wearing a mini jean skirt and flip flops and she was also rude. The whole time I was like where am I right now hahaha.

You're welcome! I agree that having a strong support system (including the humor and support I've seen on this forum!) is SO IMPORTANT for this process.

Okay, but for real, I would really appreciate an exclamation point in an invite email hahah

Oh it wasn't super horrible- just that they were unwilling to offer me further consideration and were sorry to offer 'such disappointing' news via email. Kinda read like a rejection from a narcissistic guy after a first date who doesn't want date #2--but it was my first rejection, so maybe I took it worse than it was. It just didn't have some of the affirmations I would expect from a let-down letter written by a psychologist.

Unfortunately there are lots of disappointing psychologists out there who say weird stuff...makes me wonder how they're like with clients.

Has anyone heard anything about when Denver Health Medical Center might be holding interviews? I don't think invites/rejections have gone out yet, but they don't list interview dates online and I can't seem to locate any info about interview dates in last year's interview forum either. I'm mostly asking because my January is starting to fill up and I'd really like to make sure I'm available for this one!

This exact thing happened to me during a graduate school interview! I think I blocked out that whole experience until I read this. He popped both feet up on his desk, crossed his arms behind his head, and asked me about every other program I applied to so that he could judge them/me. Super pleasant. Here's hoping that all of our interviewers keep their feet on the ground.

It is somehow so much worse than I thought it could be! I had a professor describe this time as the most stressful part of grad school for her, and I'd have to agree. It's helpful to have that normalized from the other side, but it's so, so brutal. And yes yes, a thousand yes's about Courtney Love! I know if I get a weird look from someone when I mention/play her music, they aren't for me; and when someone nerds out, I've found a new friend. So between this weird hazing we're going through and our love for the Love, we're, like, soul sisters for life?
Soul sisters definitely! Finally got the sister I wanted:highfive: as far as the match process goes at this point I’m preparing for the worst but hoping for the best and quite frankly at this point digging my head in the sand and popping in my earbuds in listening to Celebrity skin on repeat!

Invite or Rejection: Rejection
Notification Type: Mass e-mail
Date: 12/2 (it's SATURDAY [!!!] afternoon)
Interviews: IDK
How I'm staying sane: Saturday, really?! Not cool. Aside from that, I am fine with this rejection. My advisor really wanted me to apply here, but I did not feel that the fit was good for me and it was thus toward the bottom of my list. Anyhow, I've been watching all of the sports today and continuing to watch Seth Myers and eat lots of chocolate.

Sorry for this stupid Saturday rejection! Is anyone else still waiting to hear from this site? I didn't get an invite but also no rejection yet.

No worries! My grad program's clinical training director (who used to be at an internship site) said that sometimes folks who haven't heard either way when other folks have may be on a "waitlist" of sorts in case they receive no's from invitees. At least that's how it was where she worked.

Also, this has been bothering me all week - I came off of Thanksgiving with 5 interview invitations (and no rejections yet) and was feeling pretty okay about my status. I talked to a faculty member and they said, "You shouldn't be excited yet. You can be excited if you get eight interviews. Eight is the magic number." It was quite the invalidating experience.

Wow, that’s super invalidating! 5 interviews is awesome! You can be excited no matter how many damn interviews you get because even one interview means someone got excited about you!!

Ugh, that's not cool :inpain: pissed on your behalf! I have 4 and am super excited!! But was also excited when I got my very first one, and each one after that. With how awful, anxiety-provoking, and relentless this process is, I say you should be excited about every. single. interview. So congrats to you on your FIVE invites :soexcited:

Nope, this is one of my sites too (HRSA track). Super frustrating when sites don't list interview dates (or at least tentative ones or a realistic range)... at least 4-5 of my sites are like this actually, mostly CMHCs, and it makes it really difficult to plan. Don't they know that January is just a month away and plane/bus/train tickets are expensive, and only get more expensive the closer we get to the dates?! 😡 :grumpy:

Oh no I get this! That’s how I felt about nationwide like “I’m so so sorry!” I mean cool, i get that, but you aren’t breaking me right now
I loved my rejection from Indiana university
Said something like “i assure this is not a reflection on your qualifications and am certain you will get several other invites”

Woohoo, I also got this invite yesterday!!!! SOOOO excited, especially since it came on the heels of an especially crushing rejection 😕🙁 @ChildPsych123 what dates did you request? Feel free to PM me, I'd love to meet some of you lovely people IRL hehe :highfive:

@PedsPerson17 I saw you asked if anyone heard from any other CHOP tracks, I also got invited for the IBH track and haven't heard about any of the other tracks, sorry! Hope an invite comes your way soon 🙂

I don't mean to sound terrible, but is this thread being maintained? The last update was Tuesday and I know the intention was to update daily. I'm ok looking through each post and I'm grateful people are posting individual updates, but I'm becoming worried about the original poster (and obviously dying for a full picture update!) 🙁

Has anyone received rejections from Univ of Colorado (not JFK) and/or Penn State/Hershey?

I applied to Pen state/ Hershey and have heard nothing but I think that I saw a post earlier in in the thread where someone was offered an invite (I think) .

Yeah .. I saw that too. I was still holding out hope haha. I'm assuming that it's a rejection at this point 🙁

Yeah same I am at the point of have 12 rejections and no interviews, and I applied to 23 sites so far but there are only so many carbs a girl can eat before you have to find another escape!

I've actually been kind of surprised by how invalidating some of the faculty members at my school have been throughout this process. When I was telling one that I and another student had both gotten rejections from Brown, they said "yeah I was really surprised that Sally (the other person) got a rejection from them." As in, it was apparently expected that I would be rejected. Like, thanks. Super. Cool.

Oh. My. Goodness. I'm so sorry. Not cool. You are enough. We are enough.

Another gem (that I tried to suppress) just came to mind. A faculty member told me not to apply to a certain site because they did not get an interview there. As in they were better than me. This tale has a happy ending, though. I felt the site in question was a really great fit for me, so I applied anyway. And I got an interview from there.

Ummm, at this point I expect nothing but brutality and self-serving advice from my program. Sorry you are going through this, not sure why some people ever got into a helping profession..maybe they have become jaded and callous over time... regardless, the snide tones are shall we say...less than helpful.

I feel you. My adviser/chair advised me that I would not be invited to the open house for Univ of Wa because his star student from many years ago didn't get an invite. He said it was "too competitive." Then I saw him in the hallway and was like, "I got invited to UW!" He responded, "Um ok. Do you want to go there?" "Uh, yes I do." He responded "Oh ok."

That's it?

OK? like seriously...you should at least say good job or something. Jeebuz my adviser sometimes:whoa::bang:.

Maybe there could be more frequent posts of just the "behind the scenes" PM updates the OP receives? That way, everyone has access to all of the information, and others can help to edit the list? I'd definitely be willing to help sometimes, but never know what's going on via PM.

And with the non- PM updates, folks can just search the forum for the site name anyway if they're feeling especially anxious.

Ok, (again acknowledging that there are many negative perspectives out there about the MBTI), as an INTP, sometimes, I feel like the odd person out in this field. But today, watching The Christmas Prince and knowing you guys loved it, too, after going so long for thinking I was the only grown up who eats that kind of "ABC Family-esque" **** up? Well, maybe I have found my people. #forumfam #wandprofession

Did anyone who completed the Doodle poll from UT Health Northeast get an email confirmation or more information or anything? I'm sure it's probably fine, but I'm just minorly worried that my response didn't go through...
I didn't get anything. I wouldn't expect anything for awhile though. They are probably waiting to finalize things before sending more notifications out.

@justpeachy_2019, @traumamama, @affectiveH3art, @FlygirlPhD, Thanks 🙂. I really appreciate the encouragement and validation that yes, this process as a whole can be sucky and the way advisors/faculty react can also be really sucky (and make things feel even worse at times). And I'm also sorry y'all have been on the end of some invalidating comments as well. It was certainly very frustrating and invalidating, AND, in the wise words of my not-so-favorite pop artist Taylor Swift: "the haters gonna hate, hate, hate, hate, but baby I'm just gonna shake, shake, shake, shake, shake. I shake it off, I shake it off."

edit: As shrewd a business woman as T-Swift is, I thinks she's really missing out by not partnering with APPIC to trademark some of her lyrics as Official APPIC Match songs.

edit 2: Tay, if you're reading this, THIS WAS MY IDEA AND I WANT A CUT OF THE PROFITS.

Ok glad to know I'm not the only one wondering! I applied to HRSA track too and I'm assuming they'll be notifying somewhat late in the game because those tracks were added towards the end of the cycle because of grant funding and there was a deadline push-back if I recall correctly. That's frustrating that you're in this situation with multiple sites - Denver is the only one I'm left wondering about so I should be more appreciative!

If we are going to show off puppies now, here are my surrogate children 🙂
I have two fur babies, sadly neither will be traveling w/ me :[ View attachment 226099

Well if we are photographing our surrogate children/coping mechanisms, I definitely have to contribtue.

The two on the ground are mine.

Some support comes in the form of reminding you that it could always be worse, and you are not in control.

That’s actually horrible. I’m so sorry! ☹️ I’m really lucky that my DCT and faculty advisor (who’s a tough cookie) have been extremely supportive, helpful, and encouraging throughout this process. Hang in there!
