Reading this forum, but I'll be the first to admit it's not a well-informed thought, which is why I phrased it that way instead of "schools that don't have good training."

I'd welcome being corrected, though. 🙂

I also realize online reviews are heavily swayed to the negative since it's those with girevances that typically are motivated to post them, so I'm definitely keeping a wide open mind.

I applied to LJ PTSD/Alc Drug TX, VA Sami/LJ PTSD, and VA BHIP/VA InPT. Substance Abuse tracks. My colleague applied to UCSD tracks (eating disorder-related). We both got the invite on the 20th as well, and received confirmation of our interviews the following day.

Congrats! I applied to the neuro based positions at both VA and UCSD and wasn’t expecting to hear back until mid-December.

Huh. Just curious mostly. These forums do seem to have a "PhD or bust" mentality a lot of time IMO. I do admittedly attend a PsyD program and can only speak to the experience in my program. Thanks for the response!

Same. And my only real regret has just been the debt. I Made sure to do research, present, published etc. but I’m not interested in teaching. My choices largely had to do with not wanting to move all over the country. I often wonder what the perception is still. My understanding is that students from my school who placed at those hard to get internships did just as well.

I’m dying here lol. Well if you move to pockets of the US where it is tech heavy you should have no problem. Especially in Silicon Valley. They appear in the wild everywhere! Like zubats.

I'm also in a PsyD program and I have noticed that some of the academic medical centers are still very PhD focused. My concern all along has been that PsyD students will not get the same consideration as PhDs due to the belief that they aren't as "research oriented". I am not sure if this is the case and I hope that it isn't because my program (and others) are quite research oriented. I hope there is a shift in the perception as PsyDs gain more prominence in the field. I do love my PhD friends/colleagues but it has been a discussion/fear amongst my PsyD mates. 😍

It's changing 🙂 The training director for the Behavioral Medicine track at Yale is a PsyD. Everyone has a skill set that they bring to the table

My perception about the places I referenced was not based on a negative perception of PsyDs as a whole, but things I read about one of the specific schools, if that helps.

It's less obvious on APPIC and more obvious in their brochures for sure (re. the PhD vs PsyD).

Also - my school has both a counseling program and a clinical program (both PhDs). We take a lot of our methods classes with each other, have the same practicum sites, and participate in very similar research but in the past I know some sites will only accept students from clinical and not counseling, and vice versa. It seems ridiculous to us because we are literally doing the same coursework and practical but sites continue to see some big distinction between us.

It is definitely still a concern particularly in the academic/medical settings, despite knowing we did what was best for us and sill have the skills - yes research too!

I had the thought that many of my "safeties" could very well reject me because they can tell my heart isn't in that. you are on to better fit things!

After I didn't get a call from Children's National which I'm assuming equates to a rejection, I went to TJ Maxx and bought a stemless wine glass that says "Namast'op, I can't even" on it. Best $5.99 I've ever spent (and much classier than chugging out of the bottle).

Some perspective:
I got rejected at the program that I thought would have been my top choice the day before Thanksgiving in 2013. I was absolutely devestated. I moped around my moms house, and even threw in a few “I’m not thankful for anything’s.” I ended up matching with my first ranked spot. I saw a whole new part of the county, met a super hot engineer, made some lifelong friends, and worked my butt off to make professional connections and gain great clinical expertise. Fast forward to the day before Thanksgiving 2017. I’m sitting next to my super hot engineering husband about to head over to my moms house for some fun. I’m now a staff psychologist and internship/post doc supervisor at the site that rejected me 4 years ago today. Figured this might give you all some perspective. Just because you don’t get an interview somewhere doesn’t mean you’re not good enough. Just remember that. This process is a crap shoot, and everybody on both sides knows it. Happy thanksgiving!

I got rejected at the program that I thought would have been my top choice the day before Thanksgiving in 2013. I was absolutely devestated. I moped around my moms house, and even threw in a few “I’m not thankful for anything’s.” I ended up matching with my first ranked spot. I saw a whole new part of the county, met a super hot engineer, made some lifelong friends, and worked my butt off to make professional connections and gain great clinical expertise. Fast forward to the day before Thanksgiving 2017. I’m sitting next to my super hot engineering husband about to head over to my moms house for some fun. I’m now a staff psychologist and internship/post doc supervisor at the site that rejected me 4 years ago today. Figured this might give you all some perspective. Just because you don’t get an interview somewhere doesn’t mean you’re not good enough. Just remember that. This process is a crap shoot, and everybody on both sides knows it. Happy thanksgiving!
