Rejection (11/29, mass email)

I have come to realize I’m just not competitive. With 11 sites left, I’m already acknowledging rejection. The Cleveland VA was an excellent fit for my research and clinical stuff. This just isn’t going to go well for me. Oh well.
I received a rejection from Cleveland as well, and it was a good fit for me also (though for Health Psych). After three consecutive rejections, and a day packed with clients today, pizza for dinner is my only motivating factor right now.

11 sites is enough. I read somewhere that with 8 interviews you're statistically pretty much guaranteed to match. And many people have matched with much fewer! Rejections are not necessarily a reflection on your competitiveness. I know people who suck who have matched. And I know of people who are fantastic and didn't. Don't let this beast of a process bring you down!

Now we have to worry about text messages too?!

I love this movie and this gif is so perfect for this process

PEETZIT!!!! (ignore if you weren't around for that earlier forumfam moment 😛)

I'm with you...praying for a text :xf:
Here's a bit of hope... On Thanksgiving, I was gut checked to get on here and see someone report an invite they'd received from a site I'm quite interested in. This week, bingo bango, I receive an invite from the very same site! 😀 Perhaps it will be the same with this one.

At the point where I’m now just getting rejection after rejection. It started all swell and now just sucks. Every program that contacted someone else on here with an invite before emailing me has been a rejection. I know everyone keeps espousing “rolling invites” but it doesn’t feel that way. When invites come in and I haven’t been one of the invited, I’m 0/7 on here. So I’m anticipating a plethora of rejections coming in soon.

Enjoy that sweet pizza, I just want to eat too.

Same here. It sucks 🙁

That's definitely a bit of hope. Plus, the person who got a text applied to a different track than me, what about you?

And the truly magical part was that I was riding the high from that invite when I received my very first rejection, so that helped me not gaf about it at all! 😛

Im struggling with the same feelings. But here are some things that have been shared with me by the internship director and and faculty at my school.

You have no idea what key words may or may not trigger your reader, and some sites have hyper specific selection criteria they are looking for. They can key into a single phrase and toss the entire thing because of it.

A quote from our DCT: Everyone is smart at this point, rejections are nearly always about site fit. Rejection is a blessing because you are likely being saved from the experience of not meshing with supervisors, a lack of alignment in training goals, or going down a path that is not in line with your dreams.

3 rejections 0 invites. I feel you. This is really really hard.

Here is a Brene Brown quote I've found encouraging. "Imperfections are life's little reminder that we are all in this together"

WE are good enough. We belong. We will survive this difficult journey. We are going to finish strong.

P.S. since we are talking MBTI, I'm an INTJ and I don't care about its psychometric properties. I like it and have found it useful! 🙂

Yep received a heart pounding inducing email just now with an apology from the TD. I honestly was hoping it was a whoops we do want to interview you after all! Email instead 🤔
OMG all of this with this site!! I got the reject, couldn't believe our emails were visible, and then happened to see the followup email in the middle of the night & was confused into thinking it might be an invite from a different site. #Denvered again, good riddance!!

Genuinely tho, super congrats and best of luck to those who got invites...way to beat out a GIANT crowd!

You are very much not alone, I've been feeling this way since my 7th rejection yesterday. I am still waiting to hear from 7 places, but three of them have already sent out invites. All the places I genuinely thought would be excellent matches have rejected me. It is super-duper rough, and definitely difficult to not give up hope. Sending you good vibes, you are not alone friend!

If it helps, people in my cohort interested in neuro were told to expect a TON of rejections. Most of the students from my program in past years who wanted to do neuro would apply to about 20 sites and get about 2-3 interviews....but they all still matched!! Neuro people statistically have a LOT less interviews than other tracks, so try to not compare yourself to those on here with different specialties. Easier said than done, I'm sure, but I hope this helps 🙂

Hahaha! Yes, PEETZIT! I was lurking during this forumfam moment (You all have been keeping me laughing through this process...I'm beyond thankful for your hilarity), but decided I needed to join in and become part of the fam....so I emerged from the shadows and started posting. 🙂

Let me know if I missed any! Me thinks its time we start keeping a running list on the master post, since clearly, we do love our hashtags and obviously need a solid secret code system to find each other at interviews :=|:-):

Just spoke with a neuropsych person from my program. She got 5 invites in a row and now has been receiving only non-invites. She has 4 programs left to hear from. She’s pretty qualified (several pubs and good clinical experience) and didn’t get invited to some places that she felt were a good fit. You have 11 programs left, so it feels all dark but I don’t think it is! Sorry it’s been rough. Keep your chin up.

Forget interview invites. I'm stacking up forum hashtag acceptance wins. 😛

Hahahahha, YAAAAAS, y'all! Love all these hashtags, almost as much as I love the idea of someone trying to slip #bingobango into natural conversation at interviews to determine if someone is a member of the #forumfam

In line at the breakfast table:
"Hey, can you pass the fruit?"
"#bingobango, I sure can!"

Have they given rejections via texts as well? I applied here as well...so now my phone will be in my pocket all day!

What's the deal with sites not abiding by their notification date- no invites or rejections as far as I know. Should I be reaching out to the site directly? Or should I just wait it out.... Ugh! 😱

The last MATCH news email said that if sites haven't notified by the day after their listed APPIC notification date, then it is 100% okay to email and check on the status of your application.

The late-breaking internship email thread the other day said it is absolutely okay to contact sites if they haven't made a notification by the morning of the day after the notification date [quite specific]. So yes, APPIC says you should do it!

I mean, if you want it all formal and such, I guess we could always go back to just sending out these things through old fashioned USPS mail 🙂.

I'll never forget getting rejected from the grad school of my dreams while an undergrad and my housemate sticking it to our fridge. Fast forward 2.5 years, 1 MA, and 1 RA position later and I am at that program now (for the past 5+ years). Can't say it has been a dream getting out, but every day is tooth and nail.

I will happily accept text messages, phone calls, emails, CB radio updates, ... heck, come on up to my window and give me a thumbs up or down, just keep those notifications rolling in one way or another!! :owle:
