2018-2019 APPIC Internship Interview Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I wish I was a magical creature but alas I'm simply a mom who wishes you had all applied at my site. I agree with everything the other TDs and supervisors have said and want to add - don't overthink your outfit, don't take rejections personally (I know that's a hard one to handle right now), know the imbalance is now in your favor, and if you want to wear leather pants to my interviews, have at it (they're all Skype so I will never know!).

Also, fwiw, I would title my invites with Xmas but then you'd all freak out and start wondering what you posted that I saw and that would just feed the neuroses. Also, for the mom's reading, my kid isn't in grad school yet but you have totally given me #momgoals for when they get there.

I love seeing all of these awesome TD's on here! I can't speak for everyone (edit: but I'm sure we all agree haha) but you sound awesome and hopefully we have all applied to your site! Thanks for the feedback!
Ditto! Thanks for the encouragement and feedback! Also, I'm just generally glad that the TD's who have posted here have been like "aww, y'all are fun!" and not "eww, y'all need to not." That's super reassuring hahah

We have ALL been through this process and know just how stressful it is. I'm glad you have this place to bond and let off steam.

It's like they say in Harry Potter. "The wand chooses the wizard. It's not always clear why. But I think it is clear we can expect great things from you..."
Dear heavens. I love how your mind works. You're like a long lost friend...that I've never met...

This #forumfam is the best!

TL;DR: Any pro-tips for handling being double-booked for interviews on the same day?

It's not quite as simple as that, basically as I was waiting to hear back from one about which date I would get, I needed to respond to another with my preference and a promise to confirm it ASAP. As it turns out, both had their alternative dates fill up, and both are looking for me to confirm on the same date. At one site I turned down a phone interview initially but wonder how bad it'd look to go back on that; at the second site they offered a phone interview but I think it might be the better one to go to in-person. I'm a bit anxious about it looking like lack of interest/ poor fit to do any alternatives besides attend (which isn't feasible for both, obviously). I feel like I've already caused a bit of trouble and/or made a bad impression with this mess so far, so I'm trying to avoid further damage especially since I am genuinely interested in both sites. That's my vague summary that kind of describes my situation without giving myself away to lurking TD's ( 😉). Thanks for any suggestions... and OMG this process is unnecessarily horrible. Are there any grants out there that could be used for a systematic re-vamping of this process?? I am highly motivated!

Has anyone heard from Children's Hospital of Colorado that did NOT apply to eating disorder track? asking for a friend.. or two.. and also maybe me
I applied to the Developmental track and have not heard back yet. Not sure if that mass email included all tracks...hoping it didn't.

Site: Baylor College of Medicine - the Menninger Clinic
REJECTION (these are getting hard)
11/29
Mass email
Sanity: reminding myself that purpose and meaning are things we have and make, not things we earn or receive. My wife and family's empathy and vigorous arguments provided for why i should have been invited, and supportive friends are priceless. My two dogs are excellent sources of unconditional affection too.

This one hurt pretty bad. Any encouragement is welcomed
I'm so sorry 🙁 Rejections are really tough, especially when it's a top site. But as everyone else is saying on here - you got this! Keep on believing in yourself. You've made it this far (which is a feat in itself!), and you will be great! What's been helping me is trying to focus on the bigger picture and remembering all the times that things didn't work out the way I planned/wanted, but ended up being great in the end. We will all end up where we're supposed to be, so hang in there 🙂 Also, dogs are the best. Life would be boring and sad and empty without them...

I say go with your gut. While we don't want to be disrespectful or disregard any of the sites, everyone (including those on the other side) know how this process works and know they can't be our ONLY application. Apologize for the confusion, acknowledge that other things moved more quickly, and to avoid a conflict, you are going to schedule a phone interview. And then have them so impressed that you'll be the only one they'll rank, duh.

EDIT: And don't overthink it or beat yourself up about it. They know that you didn't ask for that date just to intentionally have it not work. This is a process of fitting together a lot of moving parts, and I'm sure you're neither the first, nor the only, and certainly not the last to have to adjust things.

Sending everyone positive vibes for the rest of this week!! I have a question - so I applied to Texas Child Study Center & people have received interviews & rejections, but I've heard nothing. What does everyone make of this? I'm confused. Am I in some pile somewhere...like maybe a backup? That's my wishful thinking. My anxious thinking is saying they never got my application. I need ALL the desserts. All of them. Good luck to me finding interview attire...

I'm in the same "pile" and I'm guessing they are either 1) slow to send out rejections, 2) doing rolling invites/rejections, or 3) keeping a waitlist just in case. At this point, I'm leaning toward number 1, but hey! Who knows!

Well, since you both are in the same boat, then obviously they got my application haha.

Also...SDN momentarily blocked me from posting & deleted half my post. It literally was just optimism and pie. Geez.

Hi! What email? I also applied there. Haven't gotten and invite nor a rejection. Would you mind sharing the email?

Are you talking about for USC UCEDD children's hospital of LA? If so, it looks like mass invites and rejections went out yesterday. If you haven't received it I would maybe inquire with the training director...I didn't count but there was a lot of names on the cc-ed list of names in the rejection email 🙁 er edit* not to say you're on that. I mean that as I don't know if they're rolling their notifications.

and I just replied to myself again but...

We've been there too and it's not easy to forget how difficult this time was. And we're also people... even if we seem like mythical creatures! 😉

After the 5 rejections yesterday I was pretty down but then I made the decision to find a few more places that were still accepting applications and submit just to be on the safe side. For those on the beh med track, there are a few really great sites in the midwest and NYC that are still accepting apps! Onwards and upwards 🙂

Have you gotten some good news since - I hope?

As a School Psych PhD Student, My interview invites/rejections won't start rolling in until December 6 and it is TORTURE! Anyone else in the same boat? I have loved seeing how supportive y'all have been towards each other!!! This site is fantabulous.

My three-year-old niece often does that one to the far right.

Has anyone heard from the peds neuro tracks at Alexian Brothers or Mount Washington?

By the way, I'm super excited about #wandsite! I think that's a great way to look at it! 🙂

How are y'all handing the "tell me about yourself" line?

I'm sure the TD doesn't want to hear about my current habits:
"I love to refresh my email and check SDN. I also spend several hours a day reviewing APPIC and my excel doc that tells me information about your site. I enjoy cuddling with my dog, while binging tv shows, so I can successfully cope with anxiety and imposter syndrome all while comprehensively ignoring my other professional and personal responsibilities."

I'm not sure what UCLA is up to this year with their invites, and it seems like they're sending mass emails that may be specific to the tracks people applied to. Has anyone heard from the neuropsych or geropsych-neuropsych tracks?

Does anyone else work in a building that challenges cell phone reception?

My very first invite was a phone call, which went to voicemail, because it didn't go through. I nearly dropped the dynamometer when I saw that.

I have no reception in my practicum building and I have one site that's supposed to call next week. I need my preferred date! I wish they would just e-mail, like most other places.

anyone else think its hilarious that we have almost 50 pages on this thread and its not even december 1st? and no one has actually attended an interview? 🤣

I LOVE this!

I was wondering when people have interviews coming up? I have one next week and feel like I'm getting stuck with how I should respond with some questions due mostly to nerves. Anyone have any tips or resources they're using to practice (other than the Workbook?).

Our clinical coordinator suggested a brief academic overview (undergrad, grad school, year in grad school), where you're from if you want, brief overview of clinical experience, brief overview of research experience if you're at a place with a research emphasis. Apparently it doesn't have to be much more in-depth than the kind of basic info you would put in your cover letter and/or essays!

I had my first interview on Monday! And two scheduled for next week. I'm also looking for interview tips so please send them my way too.

Congrats on your interview!!! Can't believe how early that was! How did it go??

Also, I'm currently watching this video to try and prepare (although its similar to the workbook):
