2018-2019 APPIC Internship Interview Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
At what point do we prompt them?
I have no idea - i'm glad someone reminded me because I am leaving in 2 weeks and won't be returning until all my interviews are done. So waiting for it in the mail won't be helpful if I have my mail held while interviewing this month. I hope we get it via email like Resi2017....

Just got #denvered so hard! Out grocery shopping for dinner tonight, phone rings with an area code from far away in the same state, definitely a place I've applied. I struggle for 30 seconds, before I decide to let it go to voicemail instead of fielding an obvious interview invite in the middle of the supermarket. Turns out it's the gas company, naturally. #deflatedbygas

I don't know how to interpret my BOP results... Someone help!! What am I looking for?
If you got your results back and it said: "You have been found qualified for this position and you have been referred to the Human Resource Department for employment consideration."-----Then they will contact you shortly for an interview. All of my BOP results said this and Lexington has already reached out and I've scheduled an interview

Looks like the east coast sites are active this week. Keeping my fingers crossed!!!!

Are you sure? I thought it was supposed to say best qualified or something..

Has anyone received either a rejection or invite for the Miami VAMC General track? I saw both invites and rejections go out on Friday for the health, forensic, and neuropsych tracks but nothing about the general track.
I received an invite yesterday

They e-mailed me the interview schedule ("Dear [name]..." in attached document), information on hotels/airport/transportation, and maps of the site just this morning (10:23AM CST). My interview is this Friday 12/8. Hope you get yours soon!

If I PM you, would you mind forwarding me that to my email? I'm going on the 15th and starting to worry since I'm out of town for another interview starting on the 12th.

For folks that received invites, are they asking us to call back on various dates due to the track? I was wondering when I would hear something today but it has been awfully quiet. Thank you grad Gods!!! I know jumped into the next bracket and have increased by likelihood of matching to 90%!!!!

Honestly could have seen this coming a mile away. My focus has been in substance use and forensic neuropsychology; this site is predominantly geriatric evaluation and rehabilitation. If there’s anything I’ve learned in my rejections, it’s fit matters over all. All interviews have tailored rotations to my interests and all rejections have not aligned well with anything I’ve done in research or practicum. #lessonlearned #thirststillunquenched

I agree that fit is important but this frustrates me to the extent that I'm like...what if I want to expand my knowledge to other populations?? I only have one VA invite and I know my clinical experiences have been a lot of forensic stuff but I thought I did a good job communicating how my skills are applicable/a good fit. Maybe not.

Oh preach!! My grad school has done their best to offer opportunities for practica but there have been limited opportunities here just due to location. At one of the internship prep sessions we had that was focused on essay writing we asked the presenter about this situation where we want to expand to a setting/population where our practica haven't given us experience. He sarcastically said, "Well you'll just have to tell the site how much you need them!" I mouth-vomited a bit...

I agree completely. I've only gotten one VA as well, and the common thread has been that I lack substantive VA-experience. But my neuropsychology training just hasn't permitted VA work, so what the heck was I supposed to do?

We want to build a variety of skills across multiple populations, but if we can't expand to sites that offer such opportunities beyond our current training expertise (e.g., forensic, substance use), then how can we ever be well-rounded?

Idk, maybe I'm being a big baby. Just hate the stonewalling I'm getting from VA's.

Just got an email from the Illiana VA confirming that they’ve received my application and will be sending out notifications regarding interviews on Friday!

I think there could be other factors at play, too. I have zero VA experience and unexpectedly received invites at every VA I applied to. So I don't think "fit" necessarily means previous experience, but more so how your previous experience and training objectives interact to predict a complementary relationship with the site? I'm probably over-thinking it. I am honestly starting to think that a large percentage of this whole process is just randomness.

This!! Yes. I have nada experience with the VA, but have received 8 offers thus far at VAs. Training objectives and previous experiences are important, but I agree there HAS to be a randomness component somewhere in here.

Well yeah, the other factor is I'm a garbage candidate. Which to be fair, is entirely possible if not likely. Just got to accept that I got some interviews, and in the end will be where I be.

You are NOT a garbage candidate! Get that negative self-talk outta here! This process is random and weird and we don’t really know why we get rejections or invites. I really don’t think it just comes down to qualifications! Keep your head up & know that invites to your #wandsite and other amazing sites who want you are on their way!

I hope you're right! I was sure one of my invites was going to be a rejection because of the experience thing.... I can relate to the desire to get experience you don't have yet and frustration/anxiety at sensing the want for that experience holds you back.

I imagine that you are NOT a garbage candidate, especially if you got this far. You're going to end up somewhere that wants you and that should count for something!!!

I only 'liked' this because it made me laugh, and I've had the same thoughts (not about you obviously, about me haha)

You're not a garbage candidate; you've gotten interviews, clearly sites see your worth 😉

How I'm staying sane: tbh this rejection is a-okay with me because this site was lower on my list in terms of interest, and I'm hopeful that those interviewing there will love the site!

Definitely also bought a metallic gold tassel "to put on my suitcase so I can easily locate it" (despite the plan to only do carry-on, meaning I won't need to "easily locate it").

LOL your retail therapy purchases crack me up! I've also totally bought a bunch of random things online that I've convinced myself I *need* over the past month  I rarely do retail therapy, but I have to admit that fun packages coming to my door have been giving my days some much-needed boosts lately! I'm now waiting on "Meowy Christmas" leggings with kittens in Santa hats all over them :cat::biglove:

Ooh I also meant to share on here that I joined #accunation (or was it #accupressurenation?) It's not as magical for me as it seems to be for some of you (I think I need to stop sitting 10-12 hrs/day and actually do some yoga and exercise to truly heal my back 🤔) but it does feel kinda nice in a really spiky way? So thanks for that tip everyone! ...are we sure you all don't get commissions on those?
