2018-2019 APPIC Internship Interview Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I've given up and just poured a glass of wine.

edit: can you drink wine when you have a cold? These are the questions of our time.

Alcohol kills germs, right? Sooo.... seems like a good plan to me (and also what I’m doing at this moment also fighting a cold)

And I feel no badness about calling you insecure because I’m a “xxxxty” person (your words not mine).

Oh my bad. I forgot. Only well adjusted normal people create side accounts to brag about their number of interviews.

So I'm trying to construct a list of different criteria to rate each site on after I interview, and I'm wondering if I'm leaving anything out: Training (clinical rotations, assessment rotations, ability to provide supervision, protected research, diverse populations, DBT component), Supervision (based largely off of number of hours for group and individual), facility (office space, access to other resources, multiple locations within a site/ease of traveling to them), quality of life (#hours work/week, specific billing hours to be met each week, taking work home (per intern report), do interns seem happy/respected?), living/city ("vibe", cost of living, weather, stipend, health insurance plan).

What am I forgetting that should I add?

I don't know if this fits into anything, but if you plan on doing a post-doc...I've been considering where their interns have placed for fellowships.

And/or whether interns are often hired at the site, and whether former interns actually take jobs there. A tip I received that I hadn't though of, is that if it's common for former interns to return to work at a site that's a good sign because it means people really like the culture there!

What was that about people proving each other right?

You and mordz are both adding so much negativity by acting like children. I feel like I need to pull you two apart or make you wear the friendship shirt.

This forum has been largely positive and cute in spite of high stress because people have been supportive and understanding even when they don't agree.

Can we get back to that please? Stop responding to each other or take it to the PMs. Nobody is going to come out of this feeling better except the person who shows maturity by dropping it.
This is actually reasonable.

This is also why I made an “alternative” account. Like the real world, there’s little room here for people to be having different experiences and reactions. The initial intent was not at all to be empathetic OR to be mean - it was simply to express my particular experience honestly without having to do all the ridiculous soothing and pussyfooting around people do here. Keep proving me right everyone !

:eyebrow: Okay.

I was led to believe that having empathy, especially in situations where emotions are running high, is a core component to being a psychologist. While I was not personally hurt or upset by your initial post I can understand why it would be upsetting for someone to hear that after just expressing their raw feelings about this process.

After hearing someone say (for example) "my father died and i'm upset", it would be odd to have the statement followed by "my father's alive and i guess i'm happy about that but he could be a better father". Both statements/feelings are valid and I would not encourage the second speaker to forever avoid talking about their father being not great but I would hope that they would find either better timing or a better way of communicating it.

The fact that you made a whole other account makes it worse because if you just said it and it was your regular account then i could think well this person might have just missed the previous thread discussions or they were really focused on something they are upset about and weren't thinking about how others might react to that. By saying, hey guys i made a fake account to say this you are basically saying that you sat there and thought...i'm about to say something that will hurt and upset people and i know it so i'm going to find a way to say it so that it can't be linked back to me.

I actually hadn’t read the posts before mine and have no idea there was a rejection thread going or whatever. The fact of life is that we’re going to get hurt from time to time and it is not the responsibility of others to #pussyfoot around hiding our experiences and being hyper alert all the damn time to whose feelings might be hurt by the current arbitrary thing happening in life that day.

Has anyone heard from Ohio State University Dept. of Psychiatry aka the Adult Psychopathology Track? Rejections or Invites. I've seen people here getting emails about their Counseling services....

Edit: Has anyone received a rejection from Worcester? I know they sent out invites a while ago..

I was expecting a rejection from UMass Worcester today too, but so far no word.

I literally can't believe anyone is responding to this. As a clinician I can see when I'm being baited. As a person on a thread, I can see when someone is trolling. I hope no one here foes forensic evals lollll

Ok but the fact is i got one rejection and fourteen invites. #masterbaiter

Has anybody received a rejection from Northwestern (#1262)? They sent out invites a while back, and today was their notification deadline, but I haven't heard anything either way.

They sent invites a while ago? that means I am on their rejection list.

I'm pretty sure people here posted invites for Worcester on 11/30 (if I remember correctly...). Still waiting for the official rejection though (which should have been emailed today). Same with Ohio State University. It's 8:30PM EST so I doubt people there are still working (aka sending out emails...) ugh...

And I’m sorry for all those sites that invited you. Sorry, your 1 rejection and 14 invite means nothing to me. This #forumfam has gotten through their ups and downs. For you to come in and boast is a sad reflection of who you are. I would never want this atitude at my site... #ihopetheyseethroughyou I know you’re “type” and I certainly know how your attitude is portrayed at interviews.

Well, on a separate note... Is anyone having trouble signing up for UC santa Cruz interviews?

Also, Im wondering if people have an idea about Baruch counseling center's interview /what it's like to intern there? Feel free to PM if you could share your thoughts or experience. Thank you!!

I'm going to be asking about/listening for qualities in supervision that I am hoping for (frequent focus on taped sessions in supervision, for instance). I also value outcomes research being applied at sites, so I want to know how they monitor therapy outcomes and what they do with that monitoring. In terms of quality of life I also want to gauge somehow the cohesion on site between professionals and how collaborative their working relationships are. I definitely want to interview the site about how culture is integrated into training and what views does the site hold about culture. I still need to think about this a lot more myself so I pretty much saw your question, copied and pasted it into Word. You rock, thanks for sparking this.
You rock for giving me other things to consider! For all the time, money, blood, sweat, and tears we invest in this process, I want to have a thorough way to evaluate each site, so I love having a lot of factors to weigh.

I'm also considering adding a "gut feeling" score from like 1-10 on how much each site just FEELS right. I definitely think there's something to be said for also considering our gut/wise mind in this process along with all other data points 🙂

Whomp whomp
Sharp Health care
Rejection (5:34pm)
Mass email
Staying sane: Knowing that it only takes 1 site to match!

I'm copying your list because you just did a bunch of brilliant work that I now don't have to...so thank you! I also 100% support the "gut feeling" score!!

Nothing that I can tell but can I steal this? :pompous:

I have still not heard from 2 sites who listed their deadline as TODAY...and have 2 others with later deadlines.
200.gif

As with other parts of this process, I could be handling it better.
It is quite possible this is an ACTUAL photo of me at many different points in this process (including, I predict, Feb 7-23 6am).

I hope you hear soon! I have to assume sites recognize the distress this initiates in applicants and are doing the best they can. Right...? Right?

Meanwhile, I think Margaritaville is still taking applicants...it's more of a "prove yourself" experiential application. Good luck!

I have a gut feeling category! I think it’s important to be mindful of how a place “feels” 🙂

I’m still waiting on my rejection from Worcester. Although holding out hope for an unlikely invite!

Absolutely! Glad to share the products of my neuroticism with the #forumfam!!

Yes, I think so too! That gut feeling is just as important as the more objective things to evaluate. I love that everyone is in tune with their gut 🙂

Has anyone heard from Sharp Healthcare (deadline was today) or Children’s institute (deadline is 1/10 on APPIC but I’m hoping this is a typo).
This last day of waiting is the worst!
I'm also waiting on Children's Institute and was also hoping it was a typo...but no one has been able to confirm that. 🙁

Yeah, I am super confused about that. I wonder if it would be wrong to send an email on Monday?

I think it’s still unclear what track(s) sent out invites previously. Unless I misunderstood somewhere along the lines.

Myself and some cohort mates haven’t heard anything from the forensic track yet.

Is anyone else still waiting on Duke CAPS? I know they sent out rejections and invites today and I still haven't heard anything.

Rejection (at 8:15pm on deadline day...glad I meant so much to you haha)
Sanity:

Gave up on this place weeks ago. Got one of my dream sites, can't complain. This place was not a great fit, and the fact they sent me three generic sentences this late on deadline day proves my point.

Hey ! I'm not sure if you saw my post earlier, but I think you are a #NeuroSeeker and was wondering if you saw any statistics about the match rate to interviews for those going into pure neuropsych tracks. Trying to plan my odds here. Thanks!

There were tracks? Man, no wonder they didn’t call me. I’m so confused.
