2018-2019 APPIC Internship Interview Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Is anyone else still waiting on Duke CAPS?? I'm so confused they sent out both rejections and invites....

i think i know the answer to this question but considering i am tired, stressed, anxious, and a whole bunch of other feelings cuz of this process, i guess i just want to think through this somewhere outside of my head lol. if i talk about one track in my application/cover letter, but show some interest in another track as well during the interview, would i be shooting myself in the foot? would that be seen as flexibility? or not knowing what i want in life hahah. for some context: the site did not specify any track in the email invite, and they also did not require us to pick a specific track when applying (but i did anyway and am now kind of wishing that i picked a different one). i'm sorry if this was convoluted, i'm tired lol

they all seemed to know my material really well

This actually terrifies me a little bit. It’s like after a class presentation that you know you did the research for but

Are there different Match Numbers for each track? If so, then the site needs to rank applicants separately for each track (and you will need to rank the tracks separate too) so you'll want to let them know to consider you for both. You can let them know of your interest in both tracks either at the interview, or in a follow up email. As applicants visit programs, they often learn additional things or have different perceptions about the training opportunities and people's interest in programs often change after visiting so it would not be that surprising that you may have learned about another track that you're interested in, if it's a good fit. However, if the tracks are very different, it might seem you don't know what you want (which could look bad), so you may have to make a strong case to be considered for both. If there are no separate tracks, then everyone matches to the site rather than a track, and hopefully at the interview you'll learn how they place interns into the tracks after Match Day.

thank you! that was super helpful. there are no separate track numbers for matching. i think i used the wrong term -- they're more like different sites you can choose from (and based on their needs, etc.). so it seems less formal than actual, separate tracks. thank you!!

I do not know, but I just wanted to reply and say AMAZINGGGGGGGGGG and AWESOMMEEEEEEE and that is something I did not even know could happen, but is now my dream.
May it come true for you and everyone else that wants it! It was definitely an email to all interviewees. There is hope and goodness in the world!

I interviewed at my dream site and got a very nice follow-up email from the TD, and am wondering how to say PICK ME PICK ME I PICK YOU I PICK YOU more subtly in my response without breaking APPIC rules. Don't worry y'all had some good suggestions a few pages ago.
TD follow up email is the shizzle-bizzle-dizzle!!! That's their version of HINT HINT PICK ME! I think - other opinions?

BTW: Would it be breaking APPIC rules if, at my dream site, I answer the "where do you see yourself in 5 years" questions with "right here, celebrating five years of bliss!"??? Too obvious??? :joyful:😉

Has anyone heard anything from Mount Washington Pediatric Hospital? They were supposed to notify Friday...

Has anyone else had a site quietly change their notification date on their APPIC page without sending out any notice?? I've been waiting since last Friday...for ab.so.lute.ly.no.reason.

Could we be waiting on the same place?! Cause your story sounds like my story too.

Has anyone gotten a rejection from the University of Maryland College Park UCC? I know invites went out a little while ago, but there was some confusion about whether anyone had gotten rejections yet. Their deadline was Friday and they're my last site to hear from!!

Has anyone received a call to schedule their interview with UMaryland College Park? I got an invite but haven’t received any additional information...

I have nothing helpful to offer except words of encouragement because this sounds rly tough but also a little bit exciting. I hope you get the right balance of caffeine/sugar/adrenaline to get you through the drive and the interview! I'm also anticipating that this will be me because I booked flights on whatever airline it was that accidentally let all of its pilots be on vacation at the same time.

Thank you! It was really tough...the drive was ok but i got in at 4am and had to be there at the interview at 8:30am. But now I can forget about interviews until January 4th!

Also how could the airline make such a ridiculous mistake? I hope they rectify the situation before your flight!

Ok let’s workshop this. Maybe “evidence-based?” Haha!
I like it. Add a knowing glance and you've got a deal! Are you getting in last minute? I'm scheduled to be in a day and a half before to do three online interviews.

I get super inhuman when I'm sleep deprived so kudos to you for getting there, getting through it, and now being able to forget about interviews until next year. The airline (American) says they've fixed the problem, but I'll sharpen my psychology ninja skills and use them on myself should no pilots, airport power outages, geese on a runway, or any other travel adventures arise.

You should totally sharpen your psychology ninja skills to work the folks at American who give you a hard time to ensure you get taken care of appropriately. I mean honing those skills for yourself works too, but just a thought.

Also- I’m finishing these early to a point where I ask more questions than they do and it never takes the full allotted time in total. Am I being efficient in my answers or do I suck?

Okay so now I feel like Skype is even worse than strictly telephone! I felt like I was so awkwardly giving weird intense eye contact into the camera . But no major technical difficulties at least!! Alright initial Skype jitters are gone!
I had my first interview, which was phone, and I felt so strange. I felt it should have gone longer but they were like ok bye. Its just feels hard for both parties to get a sense of each other in 30 minutes or so!

I think as long as you are conveying enthusiasm for the site and you run out of questions because you already know everything about them from doing buckets of research you are good. Maybe bring a board game? Play a round of Truth or Dare?

One more site to go after 5 rejections in a row.

Hah, that rhymed! Anyone have info on Rutgers Biomedical? They notified early December last year so I don't have high hopes...but I don't want to end this journey with 6 consecutive rejections either. haha Deadline is tomorrow...I'll just be here...refreshing....so much refreshing...:beat:

Hahahah! I need to stop overanalyzing! , So I think the best way for us to really see how we fit with each other is a round of Cards Against Humanity...

Touche, touche my friend. But I suppose taking too much time isn't good either. Again, I overanalyze everything, a major weakness 😛

Agreed! Mine kept cutting out. I realize I like phone better, I make weird , large hand gestures when I’m talking on the phone.
