2018 Match List

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I ask this every year, but can mods create a 2018 match list discussion thread so we can filter out all this garbage? The 2018 match lists are a valuable resource for SDN users and it's being diluted by all the nauseating arm-chair debates.

Just sticky the 2018 match list and have the discussion in the regular forum or something. That way people can easily access the information.

Good idea in theory but we’ll never manage to not go off topic, anyway. The internet is what it is.

=( I thought that was what mods were for. I do suppose the tangential discussions are a consequence of the length of time between match day and school's release of official lists.

I still contend that there should be a sticky 2018 match list when it's all said and done so future users can refer to a thread with only match lists, seeing as they are a sought after resource.

Fanastic, that’s ONE MD school that sometimes send kids to non-hospita sites, and probably not even for core rotations like surgery or medicine and such.

Now, can you name me one DO school that place 100% of its students in a residency driven hospital for core surgery 3rd year programs? Just geniunely curious.
OSU

Awesome! Any other DO institution that can provide this? Sounds like OSU is undoubtly the king of DO schools then.
Osu 2020 is gonna blow every other DO school away. That class is insane. Pretty sure ~75% of the class started studying (3-4hrs/day) for boards as soon as we got back from Christmas lol ortho/derm all around

FALSE. Cal Northstate students will be rotating in Kaiser NorCal which is NOT a WesternCOMP site. KaiserNorCal has a TON of GME and I suspect CalNorthstate will be using this infrastructure for MS3 clinical training. Cal Northstate has also funded the opening of a new EM program in a different hospital in NorCal (the name escapes me now).
UNLV has opened up more GME spots than Touro-Nevada ever did in southern Nevada and they haven't even graduated a class yet.

Meanwhile MUCOM, LUCOM, ACOM, LMNOPCOM haven't opened up a single new GME program despite already graduating a class. Incarnate Word promised to open up 200 new GME spots before the graduation of the first class but that doesn't seem like it's going to happen either.

PCOM doesn't have 100%, but we have a damn good amount. And tbh, most of the ppl who want surgery don't even go for the core sites that have them. They choose the second option where they jump around hospitals month-to-month because it allows them more flexibility to schedule away rotations during 3rd and early 4th year at the hospitals they'd most likely want to do residency at. With the core sites, you have to follow their schedules and it's not as easy to break away for aways as it is when you just jump around.

With that said, we also have MULTIPLE teaching hospitals that have Gen Surg residencies within them. Generally you will see the greatest use of teaching hospitals in either public schools or the North East. For example, Chicago Med School doesn't have their own hospital either. I wonder where they do their rotations at (I don't know).

I think my school could. But we give people so much freedom to pick core sites for third year that most folks just pick whatever is closest to where they want to live.

Not even close. I'm a third year here and there's absolutely no way we'd all be able to rotate at OSUMC. I would say monthly 1/2 the students on surgery rotation are at OSUMC and the others are spread out across 6-7 other locations in Oklahoma, none of which as far I'm aware have a surgery residency.

While it seems like you guys are crushing it, I think it will just be the year OSU catches up to the more competitive DO schools in terms of volume of the class taking USMLE. My year had maybe 1/4 - 1/3 of the class taking USMLE, you guys from the sounds of it will be approaching 2/3 - 3/4 of the class. To be honest, although relatively, very few people took it last year I can assure you from talking amongst those of us that did take it the average at our school is at or above the national USMLE average. That doesn't really translate well to "ortho/derm" all over. Unless your class has some hidden gunners, I'm very friendly with most the over achievers in your class and I only know of 1-2 ortho people and 1 person vocally considering derm. Don't be blowin' up our spot until this Summer when y'all actually show out! 😛

forget where I saw it but, yes, a DO student matched into Ortho at Univ. of Washington's program. i also heard of a DO matching DERM in florida forget which program though

ACGME Match:

EM - LSU-Baton Rouge (categorical)

Ok, I've GOT to know the story behind this. The old LSU BR program, definitely, but the new one? As anti-DO as the PD is? The one that hasn't taken a DO in at least 3 years? Did they have a 280 and multiple publications?

Threads should just be banned until May, when most lists are even released after they've been padded to look as good as possible.

No idea what the story is but unless this student is lying to friends and family on Facebook, too, it's legit.

And on the other end of the spectrum, we had a guy just match into Boston University IM. Is it because he went to PCOM? No. It’s because he went to Pcom, AND got a publication at a local MD school, wrote his own case report with researchers from Johns Hopkins, did great on his boards, and probably knocked their socks off during an away rotation.

Not being facetious, but is BU IM considered very competitive? Because I certainly haven't heard the best things about it.

It's an upper tier program that's fairly competitive (average step 1/2 243/254 for the intern class). Definitely a good achievement for a DO.

I do think it's a good achievement and congrats to whoever matched. That said, the "upper tier" thing is still a bit funny and makes me wonder. BU versus UCLA versus UW versus UMichigan, etc, etc. But I digress...

I'd think so. BU is a highly ranked school. You're right next to the big boys (B I Deaconess, BWH) if you want to do research and make some serious connections (In addition to their own programs of course, which is already awesome). On Freida they have roughly 86.5% USMD's with the rest IMG's (No DO's). High Step average, USMLE only. I'd say these are the upper limits of where DO's have matched for IM. (Except PCOM had a match into UPenn a while back) but I'd say this is about as good of a match as DO's can get. You can certainly get into any fellowship you want if you apply yourself correctly from BU, and fellowships at reputable hospitals at that.

I've never heard of a DO match into UCLA for IM. It's almost impossible to get into their Family Medicine program (Maybe they have 1-2% DO's for FM).

The way I rank IM programs is basically the same way medical schools are ranked. You look on US News for schools (research rankings), the higher the school, the higher I assume the IM program is as a residency.

You're right that it's not a top 20 and not on the caliber of the schools you listed. That said, it's still a strong program, typically considered stronger than the average mid tier (you don't usually see those placing into MGH/BWH/Hopkins etc for cards/GI as BU does).

What should be one of the most important threads in the DO forum always amounts to absolute crap year after year.

Hopefully post-merger DO schools publish match lists after match like everyone else (including Carib schools)

Not counting the TRI/TYs that’s almost 70 non- primary care matches vs about 60 PC matches. Flys in the face of the SDN doom asserting DO is the new primary care degree lol

Yeah I wish school would do this. KCU has a PGY2 derm resident at KU med but you’d never know based on their match list.
Damn, they really should do this. I've seen so many MD match lists where they list both.

I'm guessing he's the one whose med school isn't listed on their website. Every other resident has theirs listed.....and they're all MDs
CU only has a couple resident bios listed. The rest of the residents are listed on a PDF called “17-18 Medicine Housestaff”. Although they don’t lost MD or DO. But the guy last year was from RVU as well.

Just curious if you know if they did auditions there or not?

If I recall correctly RVU is the only DO school that doesnt have to pay that absurd 3k fee to rotate there

I have no clue who the people are or if they did audition. My guess is that they did? But yes I think the fee for us (or any DO student who is a CO resident) is only 2k and not 4K.

It's an upper tier program that's fairly competitive (average step 1/2 243/254 for the intern class). Definitely a good achievement for a DO.

While it is a good university program and is nothing to sneeze at, it is definitely not an upper tier IM program. It is made more competitive by the sheer fact that it is in Boston but is not even in the top 3 programs in Boston proper and unlikely to be near the top 25 programs in the country.
