2020-2021 Waitlist Support Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
curious what is going on at Geisinger. Last year they waitlisted 380(!!!) and only accepted about 30 off the waitlist. Would this year be even crazier?
No wonder why I thought your nickname seemed so familiar, I saw you from the geisinger thread haha. Tbh, I don’t think 30 from 380 people is accurate. They probably waitlist around 380 people, but a ton of waitlisted applicants drop their spots (it’s already happening on the thread).

if schools waitlisted a lot of the same candidates, then what happens?
If true, that would have to ultimately lead to more movement, since, in the absence of high quality cloning technology, we can all only occupy one seat when the music stops this summer! 🙂

I'm telling you, I've observed this each of the past two years. Once the calls start, each open spot is ultimately going to create a spot somewhere for someone who has zero As today. It might take 5 rounds of calls to get there, as people with As either turn down the offer or withdraw from their existing PTE, but, eventually, every open seat on or after 4/30 is going to result in someone with zero As receiving an A from someplace.

If someone with zero As is on 5 WLs and receives 3 calls, 2 of those calls are eventually going to go to someone else. If 5 people with zero As are each on the same 5 WLs, and they all receive calls from all of them, eventually, 20 additional people are going to receive calls. And so on, until all seats are filled with warm bottoms.

We playin musical chairs with these seats

Anyone have any idea of when we will start hearing some WL movement after the 30th? I feel like a lot of people on here are thinking that there will be some pretty sudden WL movement after Friday. I'm on 4 WL right now, however, and all the sdn threads for them for last year didn't show movement until after like May 20th for all 4 of them. Thoughts?

Just bumping this spreadsheet in the hopes that there's some good news and people can add their As!

Here is the Google Form to add your As! 2021 MD Waitlist Acceptance Tracker

and in case the link to the spreadsheet is being funky like mine for some reason, here is just the responses as the google doc:
delete the / before it

remember to try to fill it out in the coming days if an A comes ur way! best of luck to us all :nailbiting: 🥰

thanks @emily3590 for setting it up 🙂

The CYMS "tool" has been giving schools this message for the last couple of days:

Application Unavailable Due to Planned Maintenance

One might think they would have completed planned maintenance in some week other than the PTE deadline!

As much as waitlisted folks want to hear right away on May 1, it is likely to take a few days after that before offers go out to fill gaps in the class caused by withdrawals.
Why? It depends on how each school handles new information. They probably have to manually enter new withdrawal notices from applicants and double check their roster. If an applicant withdrew through the AMCAS portal rather than through direct email, that information may be routed differently to the school depending on the school's setup as well as how often/how quickly AMCAS sends out the new withdrawal information.
Add on the need for admissions committees to discuss their selections from the WL and the time lag makes sense.

That does not make the long wait many of you have had one bit easier, but hang in there!

Damn AMCAS/AAMC can spam me with their survey and virtual fair emails but can’t email me about some actual helpful info....🙃🙃🙃

FYI -- SDN gave the same message at first when it had its server issue a few weeks ago. Whatever is going on, if you are receiving that message during the day at this time of year, it is certainly not planned! Or, if so, very poorly planned!! 😎

I got an email stating that the amcas application wont be available last thursday. I believe CYMS is a component of the application. so it must have been planned.

i was in the cohort last march where the AAMC made us sign up for the MCAT all at once at 3am PST, which obviously caused the site to crash and was a huge waste of our time. maybe this newer case of poor foresight that is affecting med schools will be enough to make someone with power call them out on their choices. idk if anything can be done given their monopoly and maybe im just bitter after this year, but boy they sure haven't made the app process any more bearable.

Maybe. But, at this time of the year, the tool is the only thing schools have to be able to measure what is happening with their admitted students. It would be unbelievable if they PLANNED to take the application down during this time, so it is almost certainly some kind of a server issue or other technical problem.

The good news for you guys is that this is a possible explanation for why WL movement might be less than anticipated, if schools cannot see their admitted applicants PTEing elsewhere, since many people do not give schools the courtesy of a formal notice when they withdraw, even though they are supposed to.

I aspire to one day have a job that's as secure and free from recourse as the AAMC

guys so ive been fortunate to be accepted to 1 school and i'm on 1 WL for one school. the thing is the 1 WL is the more practical school because it is not only cheaper, but I will get to stay at home and live with my family who will provide all my necessities i need and I can commute to school on the train. even more, i know how i am as a person/student i NEED my family and friend support system in order to get through that hardships of school that is why the WL school is better for me. The school I was accepted to is further away which eliminates having the immediate support of my loved ones and its more expensive. HOWEVER, this is where it gets tricky, I just received an email from the school I'm accepted to saying i received a scholarship go $15k over 4 years ($60k) which is literally amazing! BUTTTTT they told me in order to accept it I HAVE TO CTE in their school atleast 3 day after April 30th. so now they put me in such a small time frame. I was waiting to click CTE until the last second so i can see what my waitlist school says, but now i have to click CTW in order to receive this scholarship, if i dont they''ll rescind the money. what do i do? do i contact my waitlist school and let them know?

Why do you think anything is wrong? Do you realize the level of competition in this Olympic event? Do you realize that WL at 3 schools is more than likely to gain an acceptance? Do you realize that half of all matriculants get a single acceptance? Do I need to give you a swift kick in the pants so hard that you will need a proctologist and a podiatrist to remove my foot?
Just found this gem from Gonnif as I've been searching for WL hopium throughout sdn. don't know if this well help anyone, but I found it strangely comforting and amusing

Wow, this is a tough decision. I think you need to seriously consider the value (financial, convenience-wise, and social) you place on being close to family. You've said that you need it, which tells me that it's one of the high-importance considerations for you. But it would suck to not get off that WL, and also lose those $$.

Absolutely contact the WL school and let them know.

When would it be too late to do all required vaccines? feel like I'm behind...

Well schools may give you some flexibility if you’re accepted, but the one I would be concerned about completing is the Hep B series. If your titer shows you arent immune, then you need a repeat immunization series which will take 2 months at the minimum, if you do a 2-dose series, but those are not easy to find. Typically a 3 dose series is administered, and those take around 4 months to complete...

edit: let me re-phrase, the 2-dose series is probably accessible to you, it is just not as widely or readily administered as a 3-dose series. You may have to call around to find a clinic that has it

I'm pretty sure I read that you can matriculate while in between doses in a series (Hep B). I could be wrong though?

Yes I think thats where schools are flexible on it. For example some might allow you to matriculate but not engage in any early patient contact. I would look at your individual school’s policies to see how they handle that one

Tough choice... if your absolutely need the support system you already have to be successful in medical school, then I guess no amount of money can compensate for that. On the other hand, there's the possibility you could not get off that waitlist at your ideal school and lose out on $60,000 in scholarships.

I agree with above, see what your WL school has to say about your situation, maybe they can work something out? You're going to be a doctor either way, and in the long term losing out on ~60k in scholarships won't set you back too far...

This is outrageous!!! @gonnif -- do you have opinion on the ethics of this kind of behavior from the administration of schools training "potential physicians in a profession that highly values ethics"? "Simply because you can game a system doesn't mean you should." And, that is exactly what this school is doing by creating monetary pressure on @hosie618 to make a choice he or she would not otherwise make, by establishing an earlier CTE than that published by the school and applicable to its other admittees.

@hosie618 -- Of course, this is a perfectly legal gaming of the system designed to bribe you away from the other school's WL. Would you go to other school, despite the money, if you were admitted? If so, I'd definitely let the other school know what is going on, and ask them, if they cannot give you a decision by your deadline, to allow you to stay on their WL notwithstanding your CTE election, and maybe set you up to give this school a taste of its own medicine by withdrawing later on.

If you'd not only want the A from the other school, but also the money, the smart move would probably just be to accept the bribe and call it a cycle. It would be crazy to turn down $60K with no assurance you'll ever be called off the other school's WL. Paying $60K just for the right to stay on a WL for a month or two seems very steep, so, if that's something you'd consider, I'd want some indication from the school regarding your odds of ultimate success.

thank you so much for the response! being close to loved ones is highly important to me and thats what sucks and is holding me back, i believe with the extra 15k off it'll be more or less the same tuition as the WL school im on. so that makes the tuition the same however i can remove housing/food/transportation off the WL school as i will be with my family. it would 100% suck not to get off the WL and lose money and that is why i am stuck. i literally have SIX days to make this decsiison

IF i contact the WL school, what do you think I should tell them??

My humble opinion, if you get in your school of choice [mental peace and support], it is way more valuable than the extra $60 K that you have to pay for it. You will easily make it when you start earning. Mental health is more important.
thank you so much for the reply. my mental health is extremely important to me as i have seen the struggles i went through even with grad school, being at home with my family and going to a commuter school has taken so much stress off my life. then having the support of my friends added to that. so from your opinion, i should forgo the 60k and just wait to see what happens with my WL;/

exactly my issue. I was so happy to receive the scholarship then i was in shock as i scrolled down the email to see that they said this

"On April 30th when the AMCAS Medical School Tool (CYMS) Commit to Enroll option opens, you will have 3 business days to accept this scholarship. By choosing to accept this scholarship you are also committing to enroll and should withdraw all other acceptances and wait lists. If you have not accepted by this time, the scholarship offer will be rescinded."

You are right i would NOT make a choice this early to CTE at this school if it weren't for the situation i am now in. this schools CTE date isn't until July...... which is a whole 2 months early where they want me to make this choice. I would 100% go the to WL school if i were accepted and I have only been prolonging my decision at my accepted school because I really want to go to this WL school for many reasons. HAHA, I love that you said "give a taste of their own medicine" cause its true and unfair for them to put me in this position.

Should i contact my WL school through email or by phone and what do you think I should tell them exactly, they have an Unranked WL from what i know so i'm not sure they can even tell me my position??

these were my only interviews. so the issue is if i never get off the WL i would HAVE to go to my accepted school (i am very thankful). I deff want the A but i feel like if it doesnt go my way, I will regret never taking the$60k tuition that could have helped me. i would consider staying on the WL, no matter what so it seems like i need to go ask the school what are my odds of success... ;/

Yes, I would call your WL school, out the other school by name, tell them all the reasons you would rather attend their school, and ask them if they could either give you a decision before 5/3, OR allow you to remain on the WL after you CTE to the other school.

Remember, the other school will have no way to know that you are doing this. Enforcement is entirely in the hands of your WL school, which is supposed to drop you after they see the CTE. Knowing the circumstances that led to you selecting CTE, however, your WL might agree to allow you to remain. If they accept you later and you withdraw from the other school, it will totally be exactly what the other school deserves for pulling this crap. It will take schools like your WL school doing what I am suggesting to stop this from spreading, and ultimately undermining the whole system.

If they agree that this is dirty pool, they just might go along. They also might shock you and be so impressed by your willingness to give up a $15K/yr scholarship that they might give you good news before your deadline. I would never give up the money, however, without a very strong indication that I was going to be accepted by the WL school. You WILL hate yourself if you end up at the other school without the scholarship. GOOD LUCK!!!!!

Hey! I have a question for you all. Are you guys planning on reapplying this year? If so how are you finding the energy for that right now (LOL)? That is my current plan but I honestly just feel like I am still so drained from this last year. I am currently on one WL, at an IS heavy school (I am IS). I am feeling really good about my chances to get off, my interview could not have gone better. I felt like I really connected with my interviewers. I even had multiple of my MMI interviewers tell me during my interview I did a great job which really boosted my confidence until I got the WL 🙁 I will know later in May if I am accepted, rejected or placed in their ranked alternate list, so I think my WL is just a deferred decision? (even though it took them 12 weeks post-II to give me the WL decision) I walked away from my interview literally glowing to now just feeling v defeated and just can’t seem to shake it.

I think we’re on the same WL and yes it is v rough to keep waiting! And my impression is that it’s a deferred decision and that they just needed even more time to decide 🙃

Which absolutely blows my mind bc it took literally 3 months to hear back post II... how can they possibly need more time? I feel like I have been waiting for forever and it’s been the hardest part of the cycle for me. Im
Hoping we both hear good news soon 💛

I'm in a similar spot. I felt super positive after the interview but am slowly losing hope. I also only had 1 MD interview, so alllll of my hopes and prayers are betting on one school (so I really feel you on the cycles of hope and depressive lows haha)

Really hope we all have positive news next week! I'm coping by realizing that everything could change in as short as a week so all we can do is wait!

im on the same WL and everything you said resonated with me. i felt like my interview went really well too. scary to think how many people are on the WL at this school. im thinking its at least 200 of us.

It’s been a rollercoaster to say the least! And me too. I feel like I almost just need to wait it out another few days until after the 30 before I start really pushing to reapply. I know the earlier you start the better but I just... can’t at the moment lol

It’s gotta be at least... at least we are on the waitlist I have some friends who interviewed later who haven’t heard anything or were told they would have a decision by July 1.

This Bolder part is Spot on!
Also, I suggest you call your scholarship school and ask them for more time. Indicate you are on a WL (they don’t know). It won’t hurt to ask. If they ask how long, start at a month and go from there. It still doesn’t preclude the conversation you’ll have with your WL school which I suggest you ask to speak with the Dean of Admission for the conversation.

Your kinder side is showing here. It absolutely will be pointless to ask. They are creating intentional, unnecessary time pressure specifically to force @hosie618 off all WLs, since they will know whether or not they are the PTE school by 4/30 with no BS pressure.

No way will they give extra time. Remember this CTE deadline is two months before their regular CTE deadline, special just for the scholarship recipients to take away all of their other potential options prior to their regular CTE deadline. This is a bribe to commit before having the opportunity for WL movement. Total waste of time to ask, and will signal @hosie618 is unhappy.

Don't do it. Stick to working with the WL school. If this school was normal, it wouldn't attach a condition like this to its scholarship. I just really hope this doesn't become a trend to take away choice from WL candidates. I wish AAMC would get involved and disable the CTE function until sometime in June, after WL movement has had some time to run its course!!

I would never give up the money, however, with a very strong indication that I was going to be accepted by the WL school. You WILL hate yourself if you end up at the other school without the scholarship. GOOD LUCK!!!!!
i 100% will be calling my WL school tomorrow, someone had said to talk to the Dean Of Admissions at my WL school, my school provided a phone number for their office fo admissions but i am unsure if i should try to ask them to get through to the Dean himself? or if i should email the Dean?

i would deff like to know if they can give me an answer before 5/3 but if they can't i HOPE they let me remain on their WL. i've never had experience using this tool so i'm hoping they allow me to stay on. i thought that once you CTE to a school, your WL positions are automatically dropped?

i hope they agree to let me stay on i just hope they do in any situation. i prayyy that this shocks them that a school is enforcing this policy over me. i am very willing to give up 15k a year if it means to go to a school i would be happier in. i hope that i can get an answer from them once i call tomorrow, this will give me a better understanding of what i want to do forward.

If other candidates you ally received A’s much shorter than 12 weeks post INterview (ie rolling admissions) I would bet your 12 weeks indicates you were right on the bubble and would be high on a ranked WL.

I suggest you call and ask to speak to either the dean or the admissions director. Explain that you have an emergency situation involving an exploding scholarship at another school. If you can't get through, talk to whoever they allow you to speak with AND follow up with an email to the dean and/or director. You don't have time to mess around!

No, your WLs will NOT be automatically purged by the system, but, starting on 4/30, your WL school will be able to see the CTE and is supposed to drop you if you have not already withdrawn (which you are also supposed to do, and which is what your scholarship school is specifically requiring you to do). You NEED to get this straightened out with your WL school before 5/3.

These are your possible outcomes: (1) they accept you off the WL and you drop the other school; (2) they assure you that they WILL accept you off the WL, and you don't CTE to your scholarship school, just remain PTE, and let them rescind the scholarship; (3) they tell you they don't know what's going to happen with the WL, but they agree to allow you to remain on the WL while being CTE at the other school, in which case you CTE to the other school and wait to see what happens; or (4) they tell you it is unlikely you will be called off the WL, or, they tell you nothing but you cannot remain on the WL while being CTE elsewhere, in which you tell them thanks for nothing, withdraw from the WL, and grab the scholarship.

There is, of course, a 5th option, which is turning down the scholarship while remaining on the WL with no promises from the WL school, but, under the circumstances, I don't think the risk of never receiving the call off the WL is worth the $60K, especially after spelling all this out for the WL school and having them do absolutely nothing for you.

Yes they would know if they are singular PTE on 4/30, but still would know if @hosie618 will CTE due to unknown WL existence for the candidate. It won't hurt to do both (option 6)and ask this Scholarship school. Of course @hosie618 you won't indicate anything more than the fact that you indeed do have a WL. Remember, you WILL need permission from the Dean in writing that if they give you an Acceotamce off the WL, that they won't hold it against you that you CTEd to the other school. I'm sure that Amcas won't let you change your CTE later, but I'm not sure if that will matter if the Dean does say yes.
