2020 Cycle Waitlist Support Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Just thinking about the wait-list situation. I'm curious how people think today's May 15 milepost for DO schools could affect WL movement, if at all? Would a student with an A for a DO school choose that over an A for a Med school? Would someone accepted to a DO school release their WL spots at med schools?
Yes some would and have. Some liked the DO school they got accepted to better than the MD schools they interviewed at. It may even be scholarships that drive them to the DO school. If you want to do primary care, then it really doesn't matter whether you do DO or MD

I send an email to my school admission administrator with an update to my application. Then I asked her if she believes Covid is affection the process, and an update on my progress and this is what she responded.

“Thank you for your update, I’ll include this in your application. Your position remains the same and thankfully Covid-19 has not affected our admissions process with the waitlist. I realize this feels like a long period of limbo and please know that we will contact you immediately with if you status changes. The movement of the waitlist literally depends on those holding multiple acceptances and when/what they decide. We appreciate your continued interest and patience. Feel free to reach out if you need anything or have any questions. Always happy to help! Stay safe out there!”

wow so people are STILL holding on to multiple acceptances? wow

wow so people are STILL holding on to multiple acceptances? wow

Students who for example got accepted to multiple schools off the waitlist have a lot of time to decide.

Some schools like Drexel say you have to select plan to enroll or commit to enroll 2 weeks after getting off the waitlist. Other schools like Wake Forest have no such restriction so you have until their CTE deadline, June 15 to decide on their school. A student accepted off multiple waitlists of schools that don’t have a deadline and all their CTE deadlines are in July can essentially hold all their acceptances till July.

For me, there is no ill will towards other applicants, even the ones not following the “protocols”. Rather I’m mad at AAMC for coming up with this ridiculous, convoluted PTE/CTE process. Applicants and ADCOMs can agree that this was a terrible change. If we had a match process like TMDSAS, us people on the waitlist wouldn’t be in such a pickle every year with looking for jobs, breaking leases, etc.

I just found a thread explaining how the PTE/CTE system works. I had no idea. Wow truly messed up. Seems like some people from ADCOMs were complaining on the thread too. The thread is called "PTE CTE confusion & enforcement" in case anyone wants to read it. I agree that this is extremly confusing on the part of AAMC.

The document that explains PTS/CTE I’m pretty sure says if you select PTE you can keep your A’s and WLs. If you select CTE you have to withdraw from As and keep your WL. BUT when I went to PTE for the only school I’ve been accepted to off the WL, it said if you PTE now you will have to withdraw A’s and can stay on WL. If you CTE you have to withdraw from As and WLs.

What you mean by if you select CTE, you keep your WL?

If you select CTE you can keep your position on WLs that’s what the doc says but on the tool it says you are withdrawn from WLs when you CTE

alright im gonna just go ahead and say what nearly everybody in here without an A yet has been thinking..... if you're on this thread holding an A already and just straight shutting down peoples hopes and dreams of being pulled from a WL then please, delete your SDN account.

Well the only news I’ve gotten today is a school telling me they couldn’t offer me an interview for this cycle. Lol

I guess more waitlist movement will be next week.

Let me tell ya I was so hopeful for an II in May. 🙄

Joining this thread late but I'm right there with you all. 4 acceptances to 4 waitlists. Desperately trying to scramble together a reapp at this point and finding a job/anything meaningful to make it worthwhile is hard. Also can't get a hold of any of my letter writers to resubmit. Really feeling like nothing is working out on any aspect of my medical journey at this point.

I know I'm not part of the WL crew, but I just wanted to come on here and say that I really admire everyone's positivity and commitment to becoming a doctor. I know this is incredibly difficult and demoralizing, but keep your heads up because YOU CAN DO IT! Even if this WL doesn't work out, I really believe that you will have your time and will become doctors sooner than you know it. Good luck everyone!!

One of the schools I am (was?) waitlisted at just released a bunch of people from their waitlist because "the class is full". How can they already be positive that their class is full on May 15, unless they have an insanely early CTE deadline?

A lot of people may have CTE-Ed already - not waiting till the deadline to commit. I for one am waiting until all my immunization stuff, other documents with deadlines, accept financial aid awards and background check approved to CTE because if by sheer terrifying bad luck one of those mandatory things not completed adequately or by a certain fair results in my acceptance being rescinded - highly unlikely but still possible - I still want to be able to be on waitlists. All these will be completed by the first week of June and my school’s CTE deadline is June 15th so I will be waiting until the first week of June to CTE.

what does it mean when schools are overbooked? does that mean people are not getting off their waitlist and more offers will be made from that school?

It means that they currently have more students who are holding on to acceptances to their school than total seats in the class. Schools typically “overbook” in the same way that airlines do, counting on a certain percentage of people to eventually end up elsewhere.

overbooked means too many accepted students and likely less offers going out. Schools will often send more acceptances (say 200 acceptances for 150 seats) assuming people will withdraw. If they don't withdraw, they are in a pickle.

Hmm in theory what would happen if people don't withdraw and the class remains overbooked by like 50 students? What would the school do? Just curious lol
I think they may be able to expand class seats by a few but if it's more than that, they may offer deferments to students, probably with scholarships

Find any possible reason to drop students (incorrect info in app, failing to CTE, not following all guidelines, etc) or offering deferment (often with scholarship). Dean of admissions would likely be out of a job, perhaps others too.

I finally got the acceptance today!!! After 7 months and 5 waitlists, what I thought was impossible finally happened. This thread really helped me not implode and I hope you guys all get that A!!

I wonder if more people apply every year, more competitive applicant pool with the number of seats not increasing, if overbooking will become a serious issue in the future? As people get fewer acceptances and hold on to their spots wherever they get their first/ only A, leading to less WL movement. Not sure if this makes sense lol

Honestly I’d do it. Take an extra year to chill and travel. Guaranteed acceptance with a scholarship doesn’t sound like a bad deal.

Same. I think we premeds feel such a pressure to get in ASAP, that often times we forget there is life outside of medical school. Knowing you’d have an A, not having to check the premed boxes, and just living before we start an incredibly difficult journey just sounds amazing.

Accepted off the waitlist yesterday!! Movement still isn't over yet at many schools! I was only on one WL so at this point I was fully prepared to reapply and had almost finished my primary. Felt so defeated seeing little movement and hearing about classes being filled, so this was an incredible surprise. Best of luck to everyone 🙂

Congratulations !!!!

Has anyone has success leveraging an A to get off a WL? How do you say it without sounding cocky? Also already sent an LOI and several updates, so I don’t want to be repetitive/annoy adcoms
