2020 Cycle Waitlist Support Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Just got the acceptance email today! I was only on one waitlist, no Acceptances, 502mcat/ORM. If I can do it, I’m sure you amazing people with multiple waitlists and higher stats will get in one day!!

Was literally about to post “anyone else feeling really down and sad after today” and i got an acceptance at 6:30!!!!! I’m thrilled and I also know so much is going to come through for y’all!!!!!

Same here bud, dw you are not alone 🙁
Thanks! The loneliness is definitely the hardest part, partially my own fault since I’ve basically been avoiding my family and friends the last couple weeks. Just feels like the WL has this paralyzing effect in that I have little to no certainty about where or what I’ll being doing in 2 months and it’s basically impossible to plan around something like that.

Agreed. I’m going to attend a Masters program if the waitlist doesn’t work out, and figuring out housing sucks. Like I wanna plan ahead, but I don’t wanna put down a deposit, and then have the money wasted if I get in off the waitlist.

Do you expect a lot of movement on the waitlist since we’re past the deadline? I’m #2 at UND’s MNWICHE list. They don’t accept many OOSs so I’m a little nervous.

Likely because we are so close to the weekend and these decisions take a lot of thought behind them, a lot of movement should be happening next week, but that's just me hoping

Anyone think there will be weekend movement? I imagine any delays are possibly related to COVID-19, and I could see it going both ways: either no weekend movement since it’s the weekend, or movement over the weekend to catch up. Thoughts?

It'll happen when it happens. Best to distract yourself and ignore SDN for a week. That said, I received an acceptance on a Saturday, so it is possible. I would not expect much on the weekend though.

do you guys think waitlist decisions are made via committee? it seems a bit much to gather the entire committee each time someone drops etc. or is it typically left to the dean since some adcoms here say that being WL means that to the committee you are ultimately admissable
Idk but they probably have some sort of internal ranking so maybe just a couple people go down the WL until the class is filled

thought yesterday would be the big day but I saw zero movement from any of my schools 🤔 Next week should be a big week for everyone!

Really hopeful for next week hoping for some movement for everyone . The two schools I’m waitlisted for have been gravely silent for the last few weeks , so next week is bound to have some movement (I hope ) . I’m literally fighting my emotions between trying to stay hopeful but not get my hopes too high just in case .

Which schools? Both of mine have been silent too.

It dependent on the school I believe. Often times when adcoms meet again to pull from their waitlist (if it isnt ranked) it's to ensure they maintain the diversity of the class, to have people from different backgrounds in the accepted class, because they already have determined everyone on the waitlist is qualified for medical school.

If the waitlist is explicitly ranked with numbers assigned to each applicant I feel like they would probably just go down a list. For unranked waitlists, I wonder if it's basically a lottery based on how the dean feels the next class "should" be. Like the admissions dean thinks "Oh we need more/fewer non-trads, more/less URM representation, different IS/OOS ratios, or more/less people who prioritize research". Just my speculation!

Do people who get accepted off WLs still get some financial aid?

In my dreams the dean says, “we need more Xbox players” and then I get the phone call.

Question, so schools typically over accept for their class right? By a certain percentage? Or is that just speculation? My question with that is, if the school over accepts, how do they even go to their waitlist? Or when people say that adcoms over accept, do they mean also their waitlist, but they are just filler spots when the people who had confirmed acceptances go elsewhere?

Even with over accepting, sometimes they have enough people that withdraw and that's why they have to pull from the waitlist. It's school dependent, and some schools will only accept as many candidates as there are spots in the class, but I haven't found that to be the case most of the time.

One school I interviewed at said about half the people attending from the last cycle are from the WL. It depends on the school tho. That was a state school.

Yeah. Even with over accepting, schools still have tons of withdrawals.

Long time lurker... got WL at the only two schools I interviewed at (Kaiser and George Washington). Both have already accepted a couple off the WL but I’m really waiting for GW to ramp it up since I’ve heard they’ve historically relied on the WL quite a bit. Good luck to everyone waiting for good news this next few weeks!
