2020 Cycle Waitlist Support Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I explained it in depth in an earlier post so i'll just copy and paste below. (Biggest difference though is that in previous years, medical schools could see the other schools an applicant was accepted to. This caused a lot of issues because applicants were getting pigeonholed into schools in their region whether or not they wanted to go there. For example, an OOS private school sees you have an acceptance to your state school and do not offer an acceptance because they figure you'll go to the state school with in-state tuition.)

The trafficking rules were very confusing to me too so I did a lot of research on the topic. I will try to explain as best as I can.

So from the students' end it's pretty simple: In Feb the "choose your medical school tool" opens up. April 15th you have to narrow your "Plan to Enroll" choices down to 3 options. By April 30 you have to choose "plan to enroll" at only one school, BUT can stay on other school's waitlists.

From the admissions office end: BEFORE April 30 they can only see general aggregate data. That means they can see what percentage of their accepted students chose PTE for their school vs another school, but they CANNOT see which individual applicant chose what or what other schools. AFTER April 30 they can see which individual applicants chose plan to enroll at their school or a different school (but still cant see what specific school they chose over them). ALSO: they can see whether their waitlisted applicants have chosen PTE at a different school or not.
These are general rules for all AMCAS schools (idk how Texas schools work).

Individual schools have their own trafficking rules too. The main one you have to keep in mind and look into for any schools you get accepted at is their "Commit to Enroll" deadline. CTE means that this is the school you are definitely going to and you must withdraw from all waitlists. In general, a school's CTE deadline is approximately 3 weeks before orientation but that can vary. This is actually SUPER annoying because say you get into your #2 school in May, you have to CTE there in early July, but theoretically your #1 school has until their first day of class to accept you off their WL but you have to pull out of their WL way before then.

There are a few important takeaways: It is in the schools best interest to do whatever they can to increase their matriculant:acceptance ratio. The more people that accept their offer, the higher their ranking becomes and it also increases the school's prestige. Also, they can make sure they have no empty spots. Also, the idea behind these trafficking rules is to make sure there are no empty seats at any medical schools since those seats are expensive and there are many many applicants for far fewer spots.

Some of my theories: I feel like medical schools may be more inclined to choose an applicant on their waitlist who has not chosen PTE anywhere else because the chances of them accepting their offer is very high (that would be good for us!!!). Also, many medical schools might not have any WL movement until May because they need to see which individual students chose PTE there for various reasons (keeping demographic ratios reasonable, specific number of spots for special programs at their school, etc).

Sorry for super lengthy explanation but hopefully this helps and answers all your questions and more!! Anyone let me know what you think about my theories or some of your opinions on this protocol.

Thanks for this post! Super helpful! One quick thing, so is it AAMC that forces students who have multiple PTEs to narrow it down to one by today? Or since med schools can now see if their PTEd applicant has another one they'll do the enforcing?

Just trying to see if I understand this. After today, every applicant this cycle should only have 1 PTE and/or be on WLs. So if you had 3 acceptances and no WL, today would be the day you know for sure where you're going? I thought I've read somewhere that AAMCs dates are just a courtesy thing and that CTEs are the only thing that forces an applicant's hands. Not trying to make it sound like those with multiple As are being greedy since they could be holding out for aid and whatnot.

There has been some discussion about how strictly things are enforced and from what I gathered, these deadlines are not very strictly enforced by AAMC. In general, I believe the vast majority of applicants will narrow down their PTE to one school by today with very few people ignoring the guidelines and risking a school rescinding their acceptance.

Also, trying to keep in mind that a lot of schools were behind giving out acceptances/rejections/waitlist for March/April Interviews due to COVID. Lots of hope over these next few weeks (although the wait is truly painful). Anyone know if movement typically happens over the weekend--I know this can be school specific, but asking more in a general sense. Hang in there everyone

where does aamc say that? based on what i've read on their website, they say "On or before April 30, permit ALL applicants a minimum of two weeks to respond to offer"
Technically, AAMC suggestions are simply that - suggestions. Schools technically enforce their own rules. Many if not all state in acceptance protocols you must PTE and withdraw all other offers by April 30th, 11:59p.m. I know my current PTE option functions this way and sent multiple reminders about it. Plus, if you check out the main forums, there's already been at least one post of someone who received an offer off WL today-- and are unfortunately but understandably upset that they had less than a day to respond.
I think schools acknowledge this difficulty with the deadline, thats why more acceptances are likely to be from tomorrow onward.

yah i know most schools are reinforcing the AAMC suggestions this year so that makes a ton of sense. what is the PTE requirement if you get accepted after april 30?

It’s school specific so you’ll have to email the school that accepted you about PTE and the school you already had an acceptance to.

TLDR: if you don’t know what to do email your schools lol

(From AMCAS) After April 30:
  1. Permit all applicants:
    1. A minimum of five business days to respond to an acceptance offer. This may be reduced to a minimum of two business days within 30 days of the start of orientation.
    2. To submit a statement of intent, a deposit, or both.

Ugh today has been going at a snail’s pace! We got this franz. 11:59 pm. We can do it. Just finished work for the day (I’m in my gap year working as a scribe) and you can bet I’ll be refreshing sdn/choose your medical school tool/school threads the rest of the evening lollllllll just like every day the past few months

This is for applicants accepted prior to April 30th. It says it’s the length of time to respond to the offer . After this date , the length of time they give you to accept changes , and it may be school specific I think [emoji848]

Hey guys, I just want to give my 2 cents. I've been following SDN threads for a while now and have even been through this waitlist process myself last year.
I think we should all be very realistic about our chances of getting off WLs. Having hope is fine, but it can quickly turn into anxiety and neuroticism. Checking your email every 10 min, refreshing websites, and having your heart skip a beat every time you receive a notification can really distract you from the important things in your life (school, family, faith, significant others, job. . .ect). It really wears you down. Needlessly worrying about your chances of getting off a WL can really negatively impact your life and mental health. This is made worse by the fact that 99% of us are not going to get off a WL tomorrow. If we do hear back, it probably won't be for weeks or months. If you really have nothing better else to do then the best thing is to prepare to reapply.

So please, try to stay off the computer or your school specific thread and focus on other things. It will be hard for the first few days to stop hitting that refresh button but in a matter of time it will get easier. If you get off a WL then rest assured that your school will make sure to contact you. Remain hopeful but be realistic with yourselves. Good luck everyone!

i have one acceptance, but am on waitlists at schools i like much better!! my acceptance has a requirement that we PTE at their school by April 30th if we want to attend. they are my only acceptance so far so i have to act like i am attending. since schools can see which students have a PTE to another school, does this put my at a disadvantage against other students who dont PTE somewhere? i sent letters of interest to the schools that would take them but my very top choice does not accept any updates of any kind and i am nervous they will see that i have chosen PTE for somewhere else, and not select me from the waitlist!

Failing to PTE won't encourage any school to take you off a waitlist. Not doing so could keep you from matriculating at the school that has accepted you.

Question...so I sent an update about a month ago, but my plans were greatly altered these last 3 weeks because of having to come home and help on the family farm as we prepare for the dire situation of having to slaughter 2000 pigs that we raise with meat packing plants closing. Should I send in an update about my changes and my commitment to rural community life (plan to practice in a rural community) and make it like a letter of intent? or just an update?

Shoot your shot. If it's the honest truth, tell your story. Can't hurt.

feeling extra bummed today. constantly anxiously checking my email and then just feeling sad. started reading my mcat books again, gearing up for another cycle. i know there are a lot of applicants and not everybody can get in, but it just sucks to feel like these schools don't feel like you're good enough. sorry for the negativity, this thread has been really good at being positive but i just cant help feeling like this
I'm in the exact same boat as you, feeling depressed, and replanning my study schedule. But I want you to know no matter what YOU ARE GOOD ENOUGH!! But do not give up just yet, there is still hope. Don't stay down or depressed, keep praying!! You will be a doctor my friend 🙂 Bless you

Wishing everyone the best of luck in the coming weeks! I'm paranoid that I will miss a phone call or something. In case that happens, adcoms still send you an acceptance email right?
Yep! In the off chance you miss/don't get a call, you can count on an email confirming your acceptance.

I'm feeling the nerves along with y'all, seriously. Dunno if it might help with curbing the neuroticism, but would any of y'all be interested in a streaming party or something tomorrow or sometime over the weekend? It can pass the time, not to mention we can all hang out and (hopefully) chill.

Me!!!! We could make a big Zoom or something lmao

No

Sorry
No offense intended
Was just answering the question...
Streaming parties...
Just not my bag, baby...
Nah, man, you’re good. No offense taken.

Plus what works for some people doesn’t work for others. I offered the suggestion after reflecting on my experience waiting-I don’t do good with sitting and trying to pass time on my own; interactive things and hanging out with like-minded others help me a lot (wish I’d reached out during my WL experience lol). Maybe others operate the same way too, but the methods we use to get there might vary.

I like Ozark, Schitts Creek, Locke and Key, Black Summer, Mind Hunter, and Dead to Me. Tiger King was good too!
dead to me was awfully weird at the beginning haha. I will def check Ozark out tho. Keep hearing great things about it

On the waitlist for MCW-Green Bay. In March, I wrote (in my opinion) a valuable letter of intent and update. I had new shadowing and activities to update them on.

Wondering if I should send another update to show interest or if it would be more harmful than helpful if I didn't have significant updates.
