Hello Everyone!
I went through MHA applications last year and would love to answer any questions about the process or share my experience about the different programs. While going through this, I realized just how incredible these programs are, regardless of rankings. As you go through the process, my best advice would be to embrace your uniqueness, have fun during interviews, trust your instincts, and go where you feel like home. I was beyond excited to accept admission to The Ohio State University because of the people, the culture, and the energy; and 5 weeks in, this program and cohort has already transformed my life.

I am currently applying to Columbia's MHA program and I noticed on their website that they have no GPA minimum, however they recommend you write an addendum if you have below a 3.3. I'm applying with a 3.25 (based on my transcript, not sure what SOPHAS GPA will end up being) and I'm wondering if I should write the addendum since I'm close to a 3.3/if I'm at a disadvantage with this GPA. Any insight is appreciated!

Hi everyone! First and foremost, I want to say I'm excited to see what schools everyone is interested in applying to and wish you all the best of luck!

With that being said, I wanted to extend to all of you my assistance if you would like some insight onto the application process etc. I've been on this forum for a few years and was part of a similar thread such as this two years ago, back when I was applying to MHA programs. I'm currently a 2nd year MHA student at Johns Hopkins University. I've been fortunate enough to help quite a few individuals that were applying last year and would like to help anyone else this year. When I applied to Columbia two years ago for their MHA program, their personal statement limit was 250 words .. which was very short. I did include an addendum just briefly mentioning why my GPA was lower than expected (my gpa was 3.08). If you have a valid reason, it can't hurt you to include an addendum. By the way, I wouldn't say you are at a disadvantage. My GPA was lower and I was accepted. Keep in mind all the schools you apply to are looking for a holistic representation of you, not just your GPA.

You can do either professional or academic for your third. Either or is fine. I did two academic and one professional.

Your GPA is a little low (anything below 3.0 you want to explain). Make sure to address that in your personal statement if you can. Nothing too long on it but even a sentence or two is fine. If you need advice on this, feel free to PM me.

Hi! I wouldn't worry too much about the GPA. When I applied 2 years ago I applied with a 3.08 and was able to get into Columbia, JHU, GWU etc. I also had little to no business/econ education. It's a holistic application, they really do take a look at it all. Work hard on your personal statement to really paint a picture to the admissions commitee about who you are as an applicant. Special Factors: I studied abroad in the Spring of 2019 and ended up failing three of my courses, it was heavily do to the differences in the grading systems as well as the material covered. I had a 4.0 at my home university and will probably finish this next year with A's as well. I'm having to apply with my lower GPA but after I retake the courses in the spring it should bring me back up to a 3.9. Does anyone think this will be a big issue?

Have supported myself financially though my undergrad but I had state funding due to my grades (covered full tuition) and I'm really hoping to qualify for scholarships, fellowships, or internships for the MHA programs. Would also love some advice on that!

I spoke with an admissions counselor at UMich who informed me to just submit your application by the 12/01 deadline and email ([email protected]) to hold off on your application for review until you are able to send in your scores. However, everything must be in by January 15th.

I don't think you're necessarily at a disadvantage. If you have the stats to get in and you showcase yourself accordingly, each school is going to want you regardless. Good luck with your applications!
 
I submitted my applications a couple weeks ago, but my GRE scores and letters of rec still haven't been received. Will SOPHAS/HAMPCAS not verify me until they get those?

Edit: If anyone reads this later on -- SOPHAS will verify you regardless of if you are missing official GRE scores or any letters of recommendation! My schools were able to receive my application before they actually got all 3 letters.

Correct! SOPHAS verified me the next day (early AM) and HAMPCAS took two days(Also early AM). Super speedy 🙂

Yes, once my application was verified it did not take too long for schools to get back to me! I know some schools started interview days in November so I'm guessing they want to use the rolling admissions to their advantage and get candidates on campus early.

I don't see any slots for an addendum, but you could potentially make it a part of your personal statement document by creating a section on a separate page. I have seen people recommend doing that.

Hi! I'm actually in Hopkins MHA program (2nd year). This is exactly what I did. On my personal statement, I dedicated 1-2 sentences explaining my grade discrepancy. If you want to discuss if you truly need to mention a grade discrepancy feel free to PM me and we can take it from there.

I wouldn't worry at all about your AWA score. I'm a current student at Chapel Hill and I know plenty of people in our program and some of the others you are applying to that had much lower GRE scores. Let me know if you have any questions about UNC. Happy to help.

I totally saw this late! But thats great. I actually took the gre and got a 159V 158Q and 5 AWA. I'll be submitting my apps in probably 2 weeks. hoping its not too late 🙂

I have talked to a few professionals in the field and most agree in that the public health degrees like MHA, MPH HPM, MBA HC, etc all really blur together and offer similar trainings and experiences. In making your decision I would focus less on the name of the degree and more on qualities you are looking for in a program such as placements, networks, etc. And congrats 🙂

-Currently work at a top-rated hospital in NYC that offers a good amount of tuition reimbursement, so I'm only applying for Columbia. I considered NYU but I'm not interested in an online program. I need to stay locally so I can continue working at my hospital to take advantage of tuition reimbursement.

He didn't really ask about my application/resume at all and by the end of the phone call, he let me know that I was accepted into the program.

This might sound cheesy but I think just be yourself and build rapport. After all, this is just another human on the other end of the line trying to get to know who you are. Good luck!

I couldn't have said this better myself. I'm a 2nd year MHA student in the Hopkins MHA program. The interview is generally with one person from 3 (program director, associate director, distinguished faculty). You won't interview with all 3 but one from that list generally. The interview is very straightforward. Be yourself but be professional. Know your story/theme and know your resume/personal statement inside out. Other than that, it's a very fair interview.

Always here to answer questions about Hopkins or any program really as I applied to many and interviewed with a lot of schools.

No difference really although if you can do a skype call I'd say that's a better way to go about it. It's always nice to put a name to a face. In my skype interview I couldn't see them but they could see me so dressing business professional is pretty important if you interview via skype.

Experience: 2 years as an Undergraduate Research Assistant with a sports medicine researcher, 3 months as a Community Program Intern with the local chapter of a national non-profit organization, 1 year a Program Coordinator in community health equity and engagement at a large academic medical center (current position)

I submitted mine on 12/2, got an email on 12/5 saying they were having technical difficulties and processing of applications was delayed, and then an email today (12/10) saying the technical difficulties were fixed and that my application was ready for review. You may want to send them an email just in case the technical difficulties mean they somehow missed your application.
