got an email from the school I’m waitlisted at and had a whole panic attack—only for it to be about an alumni activity coming up (I went there for undergrad). throwing my phone out the window as we speak.

I just had a physician from my job submit one for me last week. Both of my waitlist schools accepted it and said that they welcome all materials for waitlisted students
 
My 3 WL's are pretty slow with little movement as well, maybe if it's affecting a lot of schools it just means the process is slow this year and not that the seats are filled. Although maybe I'm just coping haha.
 
Cooper and Massachusetts have very slow movement so far. I think this may be a slow cycle, just because historically Massachusetts has had a lot of waitlist students.
 
Regardless of the proposed policy changes, I feel one thing that would ease most applicants' worries is some form of indicator what is happening to their application. Maybe a progress bar like when you order Domino's or descriptions like "Being reevaluated for alternate list" or "Not yet reviewed".

It's similar to patients getting antsy while waiting at the ER. The unknown estimated time makes everything feel indefinite.

Just my two cents.
 
So even though I am currently on 3 waitlists, my undergrad has deadlines for their committee process in a few days--which I'll need in case (but hopefully not) I have to reapply. I can't even bring myself to start working on it. This would potentially be my third cycle, I'm so tired...

what are your thoughts on either having a physician/professor call admissions on my behalf or sending an additional letter of rec from the same place that I've been working at but a different physician than a previous letter?

Both of these may make the ADCOM feel that you're really desperate on getting that A.

Everyone here knows how you feel; it’s agonizing to be sitting on a waitlist with your entire future entirely up in the air, and it seems there is no end in sight right now.

That being said, it will most likely not help you to keep harassing the school. It’s very evident at this point that you want to go there if you have already sent them four LOIs; calling them to demand to speak to admissions to say the same thing you said in your letters or have someone else call and do that will most likely do more harm than good at this point.

We are all pretty desperate to get off the waitlist at this point, but at some point, you will have to wait and direct your focus toward something you can control.

I dont want to believe you came off as harassing or annoying either; I would like to view your letters as a sign of how strongly you want to attend that school.

The issue is we aren't the ones on admissions at that school, and they likely receive countless updates and letters from hundreds of other people on the waitlist who just as badly want to go to med school. So who knows how they will perceive it is the main concern, and is it a risk worth taking when it is likely to have no additional impact at this point? What may seem as a harmless reaffirmation of your desire to attend their school may come off as unendearing to them and could sink your chances if just one person on admissions maybe takes it the wrong way, especially when they have a lot of other people also on the waitlist who won't have that mark against them.

I genuinely feel for you. I am currently active duty Navy at the end of my final tour, sitting on one waitlist, hoping to separate from the Navy and jump right into school in August. It kills me daily worrying about my future and whether I must spend another year applying, consider an extension in the Navy, etc. All I can do at this point though is continue to study for my MCAT retake this Saturday and dread the thought of starting my application again because those are the only two things I have control over now.

Yeah no I understand. Some people got accepted last week for my school it’s just weird cause my school has shown in previous years a big movement with waitlisters on SDN

Not to mention the slowdown seems to be causing issues for schools all around the U.S. not just any one school

Im telling myself there is still a delay from the issues with the CYMS from last week. Adcoms took an extended weekend break and are spending the first few days of this week finalizing their waitlists now that they have accurate info. This probably isnt true but it helps me not feel totally hopeless🙃
 
*tinfoil hat time* (this is pure hearsay):

I heard from someone that in recent years more people have started holding onto multiple As past the CYMS deadline to keep their leverage over financial aid negotiation. Is that deadline merely a suggestion?

I thought the entire point of the deadline was to prevent people from holding multiple As? Is there another deadline after May 1 where they are required to have only one A?

Same. As far as I am aware, you must Plan to Enroll (PTE) to one of your As by April 30 (this year May 1 because April 30 was a Sunday). In doing so, you withdraw from all other current As and remain on any WLs you are on. Then each school has a commit deadline where you Commit to Enroll (CTE) and withdraw from all As and WLs you were offered (at that point you should only have As received on/after May 1).

TLDR; I didn't think you CAN hold multiple As for leverage unless you were pulled off of a WL after May 1

There have always been a small number that try this.
Because the AAMC does not enforce the rules, it is up to the schools to do so.
As we notify those holding multiple accepts that we are going to release them, some do come back with their negotiation points.

Has your school gone back to regularly scheduled WL movement? It seems like a lot of programs are moving a lot slower than previous years.

The committee made contingency decisions while the ap was down so that we could move forward (if needed) when it became functional again.

at what point are we just coping with this narrative? I think the exact same thing (not seeing much movement on SDN at my schools), but I'm wondering if I'm just seeing what I want to

That's what I thought, but what about when school-specific guidelines supersede CYMS guidelines?

Say for example someone has 2 acceptances (schools A and B) early on in the cycle. School A gives them their financial aid package in early April so they have a month to negotiate it before the deadline. School B doesn't release their package until early-mid May, so the student asks that school for more time to see their financial aid before deciding, and the school agrees (probably not an unreasonable request). In the meantime the student could PTE at school A while waiting for school B's financial aid package. Then they could leverage their options until the first commit deadline comes up.

Wouldn't this person be effectively holding 2 acceptances past May 1st?

**again this is just a hypothetical exercise pls don't read this as truth or as being representative of any significant number of applicants**

Oh I'm definitely using it to cope 🤣 I was just curious if it had any truth to it because it does seem like an exceptional amount of school threads are showing crickets. It seems like @gyngyn 's school the contingency decisions allowed them to fall right back into WL movement, but schools who didn't have those could be slowed down. But I'm looking for reasons to hold out hope so I could also be seeing what I want to see

There was a plan for what we would do, if needed.
This does not mean that movement resulted.

But if movement was necessary for your school, you'd expect it to procced at the usual rate because you had plans in place?
