Has anyone heard back from academics regarding SAIM residencies yet ?
You should rank anywhere that you would be interested in going. There is no downside at all to doing it.Is it safe to say, by the time ranks are due if we hadn't heard back from the academic locations that say they interview invited applicants that they aren't as interested? I know a couple locations I applied too had been mentioned here about interview offers and I wasn't sure if VIRMP is treated similarly to the human match equivalent where you only rank those you interviewed with (if they offer interviews, not including locations that solely go off of application).
I did!Hi, anyone here applied to Med Onc resd?
Things have changed A LOT in 30 years. Honestly I think it depends on the speciality regarding whether it’s ’worth It or not’Hi all. I’m not applying to the match this year, but I will probably be next year. At thanksgiving dinner my grandmother decided to announce to everyone that I was pursing residency and my uncle (who is a general practice veterinarian of 30 years) told me that would be a really stupid idea because I would be giving up a lot of money and time. He also said if I really wanted to specialize I could just “do it while being in GP.” First of all, I am very not interested in GP and I want the mentorship that comes with residency, but is the second part true? If it is do people commonly go through this to specialize? I have never heard this mentioned. Thanks!
Internists often make similar to what GPs do BUT they often go into bigger and better things around 10-15 or even 20+ years after their residency. Cardiologists can do well with the right caseload. Both of these specialties actually both take the general ACVIM first part of boards (everyone does even large animal) second year residency and then they take their more specialty boards and submit cases year three (plus a research paper). It’s involved, but some people have done well with it. You can do almost anything in GP that an internist does, but with that extra training comes with the ability to move up the job ladder faster and some internists have enough caseload that they are doing significant better financially than GPs. All things to think about.I am interested in specializing in internal medicine or cardiology. I have a specialty externship scheduled this summer somewhere I hope to do my rotating. He kind of made me feel stupid for choosing this pathway? Good to know it’s not common and not for a majority of specialty.
Edit: thanks so much for clarifying
Hey, thanks for your reply! Since I originally posted this I have become almost certain I am doing a rotating internship and pursuing a speciality. You have some good points, especially regarding the financial aspect of IM but luckily it’s not the money that interests me in specialty and I have a relatively low debt load (no undergrad debt, IS vet school, spouse has a decent income). I will say one thing that especially interests me is often times when a client turns to an internist they have tried almost “everything” and been to several DVMs. So I would say at least in academia the scope of practice is often a bit beyond that of your average GP (but you a correct a GP can absolutely seek additional training to obtain additional skills). I will keep all of your advice in mind as I start my externships and apply to VIRMP next year 🙂Internists often make similar to what GPs do BUT they often go into bigger and better things around 10-15 or even 20+ years after their residency. Yeah in my area at least the internists are making close to double what the GPs in my area seem to make (but again the money aspect is not part of my attraction at all). Thank you for adding your experience! This is not true. My friend is finishing her IM residency and has her contract sign and in hand. 275k base with 25% production that she is expected to make within the first quarter. I also know multiple GPs in the area she's moving that don't even hit 275k with their production. I live in Denver and don't know a GP that makes 275k with production either. The only folks I know making that much base are specialty and VEG ER docs.
Have you heard from any?I did!
And many of the other forums that I’ve gone to say the same thing. There is a lot of overlap between GP and IM salary. It really depends on your GP clientele and the busyness of your GP practice as compared to your caseload as IM. I’m not knocking the specialty at all. Like I said I would love to be double boarded in ACVIM and ACVSM and that was the plan until I got sick. Then I was offered a PhD and finished that and got betterSadly they make similar to GP in my area. Maybe I need to move as I’m interested in IM and I might try to get boarded at some point (I finished an IM residency ages ago but never took boards as I was having major health issues). Most GPs are making $150k to 200k and IM is similar (not counting neuro and cardio).

Holy smokes. What area will she be in? 275 might be the highest base I've ever seen. This is not true. That honestly is on par with what I've heard for friends finishing residency in the last couple years over a broad range of locations. Production for them wasn't on top of that though, it was only if their production pay beat out the base that they would get paid the extra (which I think is standard for pro-sal?).Holy smokes. I haven't heard anything from them yet if that gives you some hope too!Has anyone heard from CSU for small animal rotating internship yet?
Not sure about specifics or if it’s a match process but I did see a post from RVC in London about their SA rotating internship program. Is there an equivalent program for veterinary students who want to pursue internship/residency in Europe or Australia?
I recently heard from Oregon State but no other academic so farAnyone started hearing from academic rotating internships yet? I have two on my list that say they’ll reach out to invited applicants only, just wanted to see if anyone’s started hearing yet!
I’ve heard from private also but nothing academic (also applied to NC)Has anyone heard from A/E Internships? Specifically LSU and NC? I have heard from privates, but not anything academic.
So far I have heard from Tennessee, Auburn and PennHi, anyone here applied to Med Onc resd?
and have you heard from anyone?
Auburn and Wisconsin so farHave you heard from any?
TQ
There was 1 post I've seen so far that mentioned hearing from TAMU for a SA Rotating. I actually didnt know TAMU or UT would reach out if they have it listed that they don't do interviews -- Is it common to still hear from places that don't list they do interviews? For SA Rotating Internship: Has anyone heard from Wisconsin, Tennessee, Michigan, or Texas A&M?
Last year, I heard from OSU even they didn’t list they do interviews… so I assume yes? There was 1 post I've seen so far that mentioned hearing from TAMU for a SA Rotating. NO. I did not get interviewed by anyone. I matched at my top academic. Based on how the match works, you should rank in order of where YOU want to go. Your rankings does not impact your chance at each schoolIs it safe to say, by the time ranks are due if we hadn't heard back from the academic locations that say they interview invited applicants that they aren't as interested? Just heard from Wisconsin! For SA Rotating Internship: Has anyone heard from Wisconsin, Tennessee, Michigan, or Texas A&M?
Yes I got an email with a link to sign up for a phone interviewDid Wisconsin email you? 🥲
Yes. I got their email yesterday.Anything back from CSU?
Did you apply for SA rotating internship?Yes. I got their email yesterday.
Nope. Residency program.Did you apply for SA rotating internship?
You should rank anywhere that you would be interested in going. There is no downside at all to doing it.
oes that mean you are lower on their list and should rank them lower?
Are you willing to share which academic specialty internships notified you that they have completed interviews? I also applied to specialty internships in wildlife/zoo medicine and it would be helpful to know which programs are no longer contacting applicants about interviews.Preface: I applied to specialty internship and residency in wildlife/zoo.
Today I reached out to the academic internships and residencies I applied to that require interviews on their profile. I received a few email replies already stating that interviews were completed and that they rank based on the applicants interviewed. At least now I can now decide the places I am not ranking due to lack of required interview.
