2024 VIRMP Match

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Out of interest, how many places did people apply for vs rank for SA rotating? I ended up weeding out so many places 😳 Did you apply for just academic, just private practice, or a mix? What was people's top priority or limiting factors (geographic location, salary, number of specialists in a certain field, intern feedback etc).

Ex mine was applied for 20, ranked only 8, a mix of private and academic, prioritized # of specialists in my field of interest and intern feedback > location. Didn't rank places where I didn't hear back from interns directly or the feedback was strongly negative or the situation regarding specialists in my field of interest had changed (people had left, or interns weren't going to be able to have elective weeks in that department).
I applied to 8 places. My top criteria: academic, reputable faculty staff in my area of interest + a lot of mandatory weeks in my area of interest and allows externships. Plus, I had a long talk with my mentor to have her opinion on the different programs that met my criteria (she is very well connected, honest and trustworthy).
Special bonus on my ranking list if I visited/externed there and enjoyed it. I also judged on how I thought I would enjoy living in that area.

Will it guarantee that I match to the best place possible? Not necessarily, but I finalized my ranking with peace of mind.

Does Cornell still send emails of interest?

I’m starting to panic because I’ve only heard from one academic internship I applied to, and half of them don’t do interviews so I don’t know where I stand with them. If you rank programs high that didn’t contact you, do you risk not matching?
I got an interest email from Cornell on the 14th

Now that ranking is finalized on our end, should we no longer expect to be contacted for interviews? Or do they (academia in my case) hold interviews up until match day?

The deadline for programs to submit their rank list of applicants is Wednesday Feb 21. So theoretically they’d have until then, though most are probably done since that deadline is in two days and they need time to confer and submit the list they agree on.

Programs find out who they matched with at the very same time applicants do. Then the scramble starts immediately to fill unfilled positions, if needed.

For those who don't match, do NOT feel down on yourselves! The match is an algorithm that when asked about, people say "it does not make sense no matter how many times it is explained". Sending all the good vibes for the match, and for the scramble!

Can somebody explain how to approach the open positions after match results. Will you have to send all details what you filled in VIRMP form?

So if I didn't match, does it mean that NONE of my choices ranked me at all?

They may have matched with an applicant higher on their list. Doesn't mean you weren't rank for them.
Or, I guess I meant since there is one place that I applied to and ranked that has an open position right now? That means that open place did not rank me at all?

I do think It means they didn't rank you, but I would still reach out!! I've heard of people who were in the same scenario that matched to a residency during the scramble. They applied somewhere, weren't even offered an interview, but they had an open position during the scramble and they were able to secure that spot.

If anyone's looking to scramble for a SA rotating internship, check out VCA South Shore Weymouth Animal Hospital in MA!! It's a great hospital and has a couple open spots!

Okay so I only applied to one school during this match cycle for a therio residency. Risky, I know. Did not even get an interview, so no shock when results came out yesterday. Is it worth contacting the school to see if I can get an application review? Or is that not a thing for the match?

Anyone else still waiting on welcome emails from their place? Specifically university.

Does VIRMP notify applicants if they haven’t matched prior to Match Day? Or does everyone find out at the same time? I was reading up on the match but found more information on human med than vet med!

Everyone finds out at the same time for vet med via the online portal. And I believe even the programs also find out at the same time as the applicants.
