I decided to start this thread for people like me who have numerical NBDE scores and have done GPRs/ Internships and want to apply to omfs next cycle. I have done a good GPR and only applying for 4 year programs around the east coast due to personal reasons. I have a 89 NBDE and a good class rank. I have contacted some of the program directors in NYC area and got responses from some of them.
Here are some of the programs that don't need NBME if you have NBDE score.

Woodhull, Brooklyn hospital, rutgers, and tufts.
Here are some of the programs that did request NBME even if you have numerical NBDE new york medical college, Nassau county.
Didn't get a response from BU, Montefiore, St. Joseph, Jefferson and few others

What are the rest of you doing who have a numerical NBDE ( close to 90 or above) and a good class rank. Do you still plan on taking the NBME?

Any input from current omfs residents will be highly appreciated.

Seems like right now is a real transition time...and i doubt any answers you get will be universal or long lasting.

But as it stands there is no reason a 4 year program shouldn't accept an NBDE score from a non-trad applicant.

I think calling the programs like you're doing is your best bet.

You can bet in the next 2-3 years though the NBME will be necessary for ALL applicants.

Good luck.

Yeah I'm 3 years out of school...did 2 years of GPR and 1 year of private practice. I am taking the NBME in August. I figure that I mine as well take it. If I don't do well, I'll just submit my numerical NBDE to programs. Can't hurt, but just a pain studying for it 3 years post-graduation

I have a similar background as yourself and applied this last cycle. I opted to take the NBME, a good score shows commitment in my opinion. I interviewed at 12 programs and my score was brought up at all of them. I matched and will be a resident in 4 months.

Thanks for the replies. Any accepted residents or non traditional applicants to OMFS that matched this year with a numerical NBDE score?

I highly recommend taking NBME and show your dedication and readiness even if you are NOT REQUIRED to take it with your numerical NBDE

Good thread you got here... I believe you can check out the Pass/Match website for details regarding the NBME/ CBSE. Select OMS program overview and look to see if the NBME is a matriculation requirment.

What are your thoughts on doing externships prior to the next application cycle? Some programs I've contacted (Vandy, OSU, Emory) seem hesitant to let a licensed dentist complete an externship.

Last year, I found that the Pass/Match website often contained incorrect information. I would learn different information when I e-mailed or called the residency coordinators or program assistants.
