Carly was sitting upstairs in the Space Needle at the SkyCity restaurant alongside two security guards. Due to their identification they had full access to the Space Needle, even though their uniform seemed a bit futuristic to the others. Carly had worked it out with the restaurant to help bus tables and wash dishes in exchange for meals. Her, along with several others from the group, had even been able to get some decent clothes to wear by pleading at various thrift stores. However, not many of them knew where they would be sleeping tonight now that full security had returned.
"What'll do we do, Cliff, for the rest of the time that we're stuck here?" Carly asked one of the guards. "It's getting late and I don't even know where I'll be staying after the restaurant closes."
"We talked to some of the other security workers. It's definitely not an option to stay here, but they mentioned there are shelters and hostels in the area."
"Yeah, but I'm not sure you'll want to stay at the shelters." the second guard chimed in, "At least, in what we know as the modern day? There are a lot of shady characters that hang around the shelters."
"No. Not the women's shelters." The first guard, Cliff, corrected. "Those are fine."
They looked at Carly at noticed tears glistening in her eyes.
"Yeah. Okay. At least they'll be warm." She said, with an obvious lack of enthusiasm. "I'd love to make some money if we're going to be stuck here for a while... so that maybe I could stay at a hotel or something of the sort."
"Well speaking of which," Cliff said to Carly, then turned his gaze to the other guard. "Simmons and I have to get back to our guard duties. Since that's our cover. Best of luck, Carly. I'm sorry we didn't get more done today."
Carly nodded, and the two men stood up and left.
She decided to move from the table to the bar, first clearing her plate to the back room. She sat down next to a man who was probably one or two decades her senior. The bartender served her a glass of water. The man next to her noticed.
"Aside from reversing dehydration, that's not going to solve any of your problems." he said to her.
"I'm not thinking it is."
"Seriously, have a real drink."
"I'm not even 21."
The man shrugged, but ignored her and asked the bartender to make her a Moscow Mule.
"No, I really don't want it." She insisted, and got up to move.
"Come on, fine, you don't need to drink it. Sit back down."
"I'm good." she responded, clearly become irritated and uncomfortable by the interaction.
A younger man at the opposite end of the bar, who was actually in her group, noticed the situation and came over to interrupt.
"Jenna! I just looked up and saw you and thought, do I know her? And sure enough, wow, it's been a long time!" He turned to the older fellow, "Hey, look man, sorry to interrupt, but I gotta invite her to come catch up with me." He turned back to Carly and put his hand on her shoulder. "Is that cool? You got time?"
A smile crept on to her face. "Yeah! It's great to see you. Let's go walk around for a bit."
They left the bar, and the older man, behind. Once they were out of ear shot she thanked him.
"You're from our party, right?" she asked
"You mean.... the New Year's Eve party? The freaky one?"
"That's the one."
"Yeah. I'm Nick. I was with the group that stumbled upon the machine in the closet downstairs."
"Right. I was searching earlier for a woman I met who introduced herself as an electrical engineer. I think she's the best one to ask about fixing it."
"Oh, cool. Did you have any luck?"
"No, the city is so big, I don't know why I thought I'd find her. No one else remembers her, either."
"Well, hopefully she'll come back. I have to say, I've just been milling around today, reminiscing about this time period. I was 9 when I lived through it before. Being an adult now, you pick up on a lot of things you didn't before."
"Interesting. I wasn't even born yet. What have you been noticing?"
"For example! Did you see that show Dinosaurs?"
Carly shook her head.
"Oh. Well, it was this show I watched as a kid and it had this family of puppet dinosaurs. I just found out that the baby of the family was voiced by the same guy that does Elmo. It kind of changed the illusion."
