Ok, so, we all know about the pre-medical committee LoR: most medical schools say if you've got one, use it. Well, my university does indeed have one--and I intend to use it--but I thought of something else, due to my circumstances.

I'm getting three degrees, and therefore have become entrenched in three separate departments. I was thinking, of course the pre-medical committee would comment on relevant science/medical features I may have. But what about the other disciplines? I have great relationships with multiple professors in each field, though obviously asking for individual LoRs from them would be too much (for the application).

What if I asked each department for a sort of "communal" LoR, in addition to the pre-health committee's that I would submit? Is there a precedence for such a thing? Would that even be acceptable on the AMCAS? I think it would be efficient and, perhaps, more comprehensive, though I don't know if it would be possible due to restrictions on the part of the AMCAS system. What do you think?

I'm not sure how your school's committee system works, but mine had me submit 4-6 individual letters of rec to them that they (presumably) drew on for their letter. They also interviewed me and asked about other aspects of my life than science and medical ECs. Maybe check to see if your school is similar--if so, the committee would be able to draw on each department's evaluation of you and put it in context of your med school app.

Coming from a similar multi-disciplinary situations, I had several "joint" letters. Here was my breakdown:

- Pre-Health Committee Letter (8 contributors)
- Research (1 contributor)
- Professional, clinical (4 contributors)
- Professional, non-clinical (2 contributors)
- Military (2 contributors)
- Character (1 contributor)

Each school varies with their requirements, and some may read only the pre-health letter. I submitted based on what the school wanted/recommended.

Dear lord, did you get one from the pope too? How has it been working out? Do adcoms speak about it in your interviews?

You were able to submit all those letters? Jesus.

Worked out great! Looked at each school's letter requirements and submitted exactly what they asked for. Sent research-focused schools my research paper. In fact, one school requested another set of LORs prior to giving me an II.

Some adcoms/interviewers asked me about specific topics, but in no appreciable pattern.

AMCAS rejected the papal LOR outright because it was sealed in wax.

I think this is more the exception, not the rule. Most people have 4 letters, max.
