Accepted, Fall 2011!!!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
ReproHlthPlz,

When did Emory receive your application? It's only been a couple of weeks for me, so I know I still have a bit of waiting. The waiting is killing me.

I got the application received email 1/27 and the application complete email 1/31. It was an insanely quick turn around time, hence I nearly choked when I saw that the admissions decision was already posted.

@JMM051 What does your roommate plan to do for her practicum and what are her career plans?

Congrats on everyone's recent accepts!!

Did anyone receive an email from BU about the application being sent to the adcom for review (a decision should be sent via mail in 4-6 weeks?). This is three weeks after I received an email saying my application was complete and preparing to be sent to adcom. I'm wondering if it's a mistake...that's a long time to still wait!

____
Here are my stats because I've never posted them.

GPA: 3.4, double Finance and Economics major
GRE: 620V, 700Q, 4.5W
Work Experience: 3.5 years working with NIH, HHS, and EPA at a top consulting firm...2 professional LOR & 1 academic LOR from health care econ prof
Applied: UNC, UW, BU, GW -- all health policy/management type tracks
Status: Invited to interview at UNC but still waiting on decisions from all! I am anxious to see how (if) somewhat non-traditional experience works for me. Is anyone else going a bit nutso waiting?

mphmotivated- Last year I had a very long delay between both of those e-mails similar to your time frame. I wouldn't worry!

Hey guys! I think I might be the first Emory rejection posted. Last night OPUS said I was rejected from my second choice program....oddly I never received anything about my app being forwarded to the second choice program, but oh well. I didn't have a third choice. I'm really holding out for good news from Columbia, but right now I'm not feeling too good about that.

GRE: 540 V, 680 Q, 4.5 AW
GPA: 3.34, recent undergrad
SOPHAS mailed: 12/8/10, but last LOR submitted 12/16/10
Programs: Epi, Global Epi, or Infectious Disease Epi where applicable
Acceptances: Tulane, GW
Rejections: Yale, Emory
Still waiting: BU, Columbia

Just got my first acceptance letter! 🙂

So here are my stats:
GPA: 3.57 overall Bio and Economics double major
GRE: 540 V, 800 Q, 3.5 AW
MCAT: 31
No working experience, still in college.
All materials submitted in Dec 2010

Applied to: Columbia, Berkeley, BU & Yale
Programs applied: environmental or global health
Accepted: Yale environmental
Waiting for: the rest.

Good luck everyone!

So logged into Emory's OPUS and saw some items on my to do list and went, "Que???" And saw that they were the Enrollment Decision Form and the Enrollment Deposit. I almost choked on my tongue! I got into Emory for Global Health!!!!!!!!! WOOO!!!!!! SO EXCITED!!!

Accepted: Emory (GH), Pittsburgh (BCHS)

Waiting: UNC, BU

The same exact thing happened to me today, with the exact same program at Emory as well (global health). I submitted my application to Sophas early in December, got the application received email on Jan. 27, and the application complete message on Feb. 1.

I also saw my acceptance to JHU (Dpt. of International Health) on Jan. 31.

My stats:
GPA: 3.2
GRE: 610 V, 740 Q, 4.5 W
Previous experience: worked for a human rights NGO in South Africa while studying there for a semester during undergrad, and started up a maternal health project in ghana approximately one year ago.

Acceptances: JHU and Emory
Still waiting to hear back from: GW and Columbia (apparently, like many others, my application there is still incomplete...)

So far I've received no funding info from either JHU or Emory - but that's going to be the ultimate deciding factor.

Here's hoping you get better news from Columbia. You have 2 accepts, you're still in really good shape!

thus far i have only gotten into u of michigan hbhe
but rejected from emory bshe...
isn't michigan higher ranked?

how have you guys been hearing from u of washington?
thanks!

As you'll see in many other threads, the rankings don't really mean that much. That said, the adcoms look for a variety of different things. People have gotten rejected from "lower" non-ranked schools and gotten into Hopkins, Columbia, etc. Congrats on Michigan!

i don't mean to be a debbie downer but i feel like u of michigan might have liked me more because i would be paying out of state tuition...

anyone willing to list some pro's/con's for u of m?

I have not heard back from any of my schools. any of them.
bu, hsph, uw, and emory. sophas submitted on dec. 5th.

this sucks x 1000

Oh man, that's depressing! Have you contacted all of them recently to see what the hold up is?

Has anyone else still not heard back from Yale? It's been 7 weeks since I received my application complete e-mail and I'm starting to get nervous...

I haven't heard either 🙁 I think I might call admissions Monday though. Hope knowing you are not alone helps 🙂

My application was complete on January 5th and I received an acceptance letter in the mail 4 weeks later. I imagine it depends on your department and whether you listed a second choice. I applied to Chronic Disease Epi and did not list a second choice. Hope this helps and good luck!! I'm sure there is lots of good news still to come for all

Thought I'd chime in with my status as I've been following the thread for some time now.

GPA: 3.9 at a Midwest liberal arts college, majors in biology and spanish
GRE: 630 V, 670 Q, 5 AW
Experience: I'm coming straight out of undergrad with two summers in public health survey research and a semester abroad studying global health
Applied: Minnesota (MPH Epi) Michigan (MPH Intl Epi), Emory (Global Epi), Yale (EMD), UCLA (MA/MPH dual degree in epidemiology/Latin American studies)
Accepted: Minnesota, Michigan, Emory, Yale
Waiting: UCLA

I think I'll end up deliberating between Emory and Yale. I appreciate perspectives of any current students or alumni from any of these schools.

May I ask why you're not considering Michigan? I'm debating between Michigan and Emory for HBHE/BSHE and the decision is a tough one!

so, when do we think BU and Columbia will actually begin to notify? (My friend applied to BU and i did applied to Columbia.) i'm guessing Columbia will be sometime last week of Feb/beginning of March. I'm confused as to why it's taking so long (Dec. 1 deadline)....

Applied to: Brown (mph), Columbia (mph), Emory (mdiv), Oxford (mphil), and 3 more schools.
Accepted: Oxford, Brown, Emory
Still Waiting: Columbia, and 3 other non-mph programs

I dunno about that deadline. I started to apply to Columbia and chose not to. On January 25th I got this email:

Our records indicate that you have started an application for the Fall 2011 semester. As I courtesy, I have extended the deadline date until February 5, 2011 if you would still like to submit your application. If you have any questions, feel free to email us at [email protected].

Sincerely,
Admissions, The Mailman School of Public Health
Columbia University

I'm not exactly sure why they sometimes extend deadlines. But maybe this is why they are taking so long?

Hi.. You're not the only rejection!! I got rejected by Emory too. Global Health... Saw it on Opus yesterday as well and felt really bad for the rest of the day. So cheer up.GW and Tulane are really good schools and the reason we apply to so many schools is to increase our chances of going to grad school. Cos eventually we can only attend one school... Even if we get into all of them... So 🙂 you'll get into Columbia n BU. Be positive!!

I'm not exactly sure why they sometimes extend deadlines. But maybe this is why they are taking so long?

I checked the Mailman website and under the application FAQs it says that: "Decisions on applications for Fall enrollment will be sent in early March." So I think we just need to hang tight and not expect to hear back for another few weeks on Columbia.

Just wondering, though, does anyone have other information to the contrary?

Oh! Also, I think Columbia had a "soft" deadline of Dec. 1st and a "hard" deadline of January 15. When I called admissions last fall, they said that applications that met the soft deadline would be considered earlier, but maybe that's not actually the case, and there is no real difference between the so-called soft and hard deadlines. Oh, well...

well, on a lighter note: who's making chili today?

i'm just about to get started on my roasted jalapeno, black bean recipe. go packers!!

So far, UW is my only acceptance. Luckily, I think it's also my first choice! I had great meetings with UW profs in the application process, and the Epi program with maternal child health specialty is really perfect for me!
I need to see what the funding possibilities are, of course.

Any idea how many students they admnit per year?

I will wait to hear from JHU and Harvard to decide for sure, but I'm pretty sure UW is the best fit for me!
I'm curious why you may consider emory over UW?

Yes, I'm going to go to the visit day. I live in vancouver, so it's a quick and easy trip. After messaging each other on gradcafe then here over the past several months, it would be great to meet you!

Hey guys

I heard from UW last week. Got an admit to the MPH in epi program !! I had only applied to UW as I have family in Seattle. Did any of you receive funding of any sort ?

Congrats on your admits and good luck to the others !

LOLL!!! Thank goodness for superbowl... taking our minds off checking for decisions 😀

The Dean told me that they would send decisions early February.

I'm definitely still considering Michigan. I guess my leaning toward Yale and Emory is more of a vibe thing than anything, which could be proven wrong at any moment.

For those of you guys who have applied to NYU (don't really hear about much on here), I called three weeks ago to ask about when I would hear back from them about my status. They told me that it takes about eight to ten weeks from the time it's sent to the admission committee. It sort of sucks because the NYU website doesn't tell you if it has been sent to the adcom or not.

Has anyone heard back from them?

I contacted them too for the same reasons as above. I was told my materials had all been received and my app was complete and that I would hear back in 8-10 weeks from the date I applied.

Just got my first acceptance- UPitt! I got an email that my application was under review on Dec 13, and then another this morning (Jan 24) that I have been accepted and the official acceptance letter is in the mail.

So nice to finally hear something!
hi,zjwah.
I've just got an admission from UPitt too. So excited 🙂 Do you consider this school? Btw, I'm an international student.
My stats TOEFL:90, GRE: 1310, GPA: 3,48 (WES evaluation)

Is anybody else planning on going to "Visit Emory" on March 24-25th? I'm in the process and getting my flight ticket arrangements together.

Hi epiepi,

I found out recently that I got into UW and Emory and those two are my top choices, so I won't be considering UPitt. It's still a good school, I just feel UW or Emory would be a better fit for me.

Good luck!

anyone bothered BU today? 😛

I don't want to harass that poor woman anymore but I'm reallllyyyy curious about applications! I know someone said above they might go out this week, but now that this week has actually begun I'm wondering if that still stands...

I think it will be via snail mail from what I've been told. I'm also wondering if anyone has bothered them today. I feel like it's been forever since I finished my applications.

haha i feel like its gotta be one of us...

rock
paper
scissors...
NOT ME!

You guys, I think you wore her out, at BU.

Me: Hi! I was wondering if you knew when public health acceptance or rejection letters will be sent out?
Her: When they're ready.
Me: oh, you don't have a specific timeline or anything?
Her: No.
Me: Oh, okay. Thank you!
Her: Bye.

Thanks, snarkypants (Not that it's her fault)

haha oh swaffles, way to take one for the team! she probably hates us all so much...

What a pain to wait. Thanks for the feedback, RAMPA!
I think I should avoid this forum for a while - it's making time go 10x slower @_@

I dont get it

Oh no it's just this whole wait with Columbia (and all other big names) is really getting to me, like it has for many others on this forum. I personally felt that the deadline for submitting the app for Columbia was too early...the extension would've done wonders for me at least, because after I submitted my app to Columbia, somehow I figured out ways to drastically improve my personal statement and now i have a feeling I won't get in because I don't believe it to be well-written at all (i know I could've done way better). It was just a really bad time...exams, assignments, apps, work, me getting sick...anyway, it all matters little now. 🙂
