Hi People,

I was shortlisted for an interview with University of Washington MPH Global Health.

Please can anyone highlight the opportunities in Seatle, cost etc. Are there lots of hosptals for residency training there? How is the International standing on UW? How competitive are their graduates?

Responses will be highly appreciated as I am an international student.

Thanks

yay! congrats on more columbia acceptances! 😀
this was probably a terrible idea to check actually, i have an exam in 2 hours and I'm SUPPOSED to be cramming....toooo excitedd! haha

What departments are you all hearing back from? I applied to Sociomedical Sciences and I don't have a decision yet. I submitted in 11/6 and my app was completed on 1/4 (although with the glitch in the system I don't know if that's accurate or not.)

Everyone and their mom has heard back from Yale and now everyone and their mom has heard back from Columbia! Ahhh! Anyone else still decision-less?

COLUMBIA IN!! for health management!!!! still haven't heard from yale but i'm pretty sure this is my first choice!!!!!!

Yes. ME! I submitted later than you did (December 10th) but some of the people who have heard back by this morning have submitted later than I have. Dun dun dunnnnnnn

Is the acceptance on the first page, the one you see as soon as you log in to the application site?

Where on the website did you guys see your Columbia decisions? I don't have any messages or anything below where it says everything is received. 🙁

Hi, this is my first time posting, as up until this morning, I hadn't heard back from any schools. I got accepted to Columbia - Sociomedical Sciences - Health Promotion track! I submitted my application to Columbia on 11/7/10.

When I logged into the Columbia "apply yourself" website, I saw at the bottom of the page:

Decision Status: Available beginning 2/9/2011
spacer.gif;pv74463024071c66a5
Your application decision is now available online

After clicking on the link, the decision letter popped up!

So excited!!!

In at Columbia for epi!!!!!!!!
Submitted: December 1st
:biglove::

Congrats on your acceptance!! 😀

If you don't mind me asking, how long after your application was received and forwarded to the department for consideration at UCLA did you hear about your admission decision?

also was it by email/postal mail/phone?

Thank you!

I was also accepted for Health Services.

Applied on Sophas November 31st. Application received by department on Jan 6th. Got an acceptance phone call on Jan 25th from a professor and official acceptance decision on the website yesterday.

I guess no news from Columbia means I didn't get in since everyone that checked today seems to have gotten accepted. 🙁

So after working the last 4 nights (12hr shifts in a pediatric intensive care unit) I come home and read this thread and now I can't sleep bc I just checked my status at Columbia...

In for health management!!!!

Acceptances: UCLA, Columbia
Rejections: Yale
Still Waiting: Hopkins, Harvard, NYU, UTHSC Houston (applied last minute)

Columbia takes over a month to give out all of its acceptances (according to last year's acceptance thread).. don't worry yet - it's still early (for Columbia)...

So do they send them every weekday for the next month or will they come in weekly waves or something? It's my first choice so the fact that other ppl are getting in is making me nervous. I know it's very competitive and I don't have an MD unlike some of the ppl applying to Epi.

I think that it was once per week but I'm not really sure.. I guess in any case we'll probably be checking compulsively until we hear anyway.. 🙂

Just wanted to wish the Columbia acceptances good luck, and extend a public-healthy warm congratulations! For those of you still waiting, I wish you good luck, strength, and patience! I love these threads, because it really gives people an idea of the arduous process of submitting applications to Pub Health schools, as well as the, in many cases, monumental payoffs that people receive, or will receive for their hard work. Good luck to you all!

🙂

Swaffles and Epi....I'm still in the waiting boat with you. I submitted on Dec. 2nd but my GRE scores didn't come in for another 2 weeks and my app didn't register as complete until recently due to the glitch. Congrats to everybody who found out recently though!! Fingers crossed for the rest of us!

Thanks to everyone for posting about some of the Columbia decisions being online! I checked this morning and am in to Epi!

Accepted: Yale (EMD), Columbia (Epi), BU (Epi), GWU (Epi), USydney (Tropical Medicine MPH)

Debating between Yale and Columbia.

Congrats to everyone who has received news and good luck to everyone waiting to hear back from some places. Wherever everyone ends up, I am excited to cross paths with you all in the scholastic and professional world!

When did you hear from BU? I thought they weren't sending decisions until late this week.

In at Columbia for health policy - 10k per year merit scholarship!!!

As of right now i am debating between Columbia and GW. Anyone want to weigh in? I know Columbia is higher ranked (as much as you can trust the rankings) but I want to work in policy and DC is the perfect place for it. I also got into the Chair's policy scholars program at GW where they assign a 1:1 mentor and put you at the top of the list for assistant-ships. Everyone I have spoken to at GW has also been so nice and so responsive. There are also couple of professors in the policy department that are researching exactly what I am interested in.

Columbia on the other hand, well I went there for undergrad so I know the bureaucratic mess that the school can be. But I also know how amazing and smart everyone there is. I took a couple of classes as an undergrad at the public health school and loved them (mind you it was 10+ years ago...) I also got a merit scholarship from Columbia and haven't heard anything about money from GW (the program I am in doesn't include any money.) I am slightly worried about being just a number at Columbia...

I guess I will wait to hear about money from GW and from the rest of the schools I applied to but was wondering if anyone was struggling with similar issues.

I also turned down Emory this morning - so hopefully someone on the wait list will get my spot!

Applied: Emory, BU, GWU, Columbia, NYU (their global health degree),Harvard, NYU Wagner
Accepted: Emory, GWU (health policy scholar), Columbia (10k per year merit award)

Sorry, I wasn't clear. I had been accepted to start this spring, but heard from Yale before then and had to make a decision. To my knowledge, BU hasn't sent out stuff for the fall, but I could be incorrect. Hope that helps and I apologize for the confusion!

Wait, there was financial aid info on the columbia admit?

Also, just got into YALE too!!!
Columbia and yale the same day. oh man oh man oh man. 😀

Hi mphhopeful12, congrats on your acceptance! Was the merit scholarship posted online as well? I saw the acceptance letter but did not see any scholarship info, I guess I didn't get.

anyway, congrats to all those who're accepted by Columbia today!

Congrats on your admit!!!

my acceptance letter had a second page telling me that i got a merit scholarship....

I got my decision earlier today and it didn't have info about a scholarship. But i checked again after getting the email from Mailman letting me know that my decision was available and saw a page 2. 10k merit scholarship!! 😱

So does Columbia post all of the decisions in the morning or do they post them throughout the course of the day? Sorry for all the questions, but I'm getting very nervous now that they've started to notify ppl. I was prepared to wait until at least March, but between them, BU, and the app confusion with Emory, I could really use some good news.

I also wonder if they look at them in order of submission or alphabetically or something. My application was submitted 10/12/10 and complete on 12/3/10 and I'm guessing a lot of the ppl getting responses today were submitted after me....some even for the same department.

A current student would probably know better, but I've hard it's pretty difficult to switch between the departments. I would guess they might not let you switch at this point. Did you also apply to Epi?

Submitted: 12/23/10
Completed: 1/12/11
Accepted: 2/9/11
Columbia, MPH in General Public Health (need to complete in 1 year prior to starting residency so I couldn't apply for longer MPH programs and I wanted an interdisciplinary MPH anyways)

Waiting: Harvard MPH

Congrats everyone and good luck to those still waiting to hear!

Today must be some sort of laundry day for a bunch of universities because I have received a few emails today about certain schools finally forwarding my applications to the admission committees. Whee!

Also, I called Columbia to see if there was perhaps something wrong with my application and the person who answered the call said that a decision was made on my application and that I should be hearing from them soon. I asked if she knew what the decision was and she said she didn't but she definitely sounded somber =\

Anyway, seems like they're just taking some time to send the actual emails out, so whoever didn't hear yet (like me) might in the next few days.

Hmmmm, where is this second page? I got an email saying my decision was ready to view, but don't see a scholarship. 🙁

I also got in, to the reproductive and family health specialization within the population and family health department. I was also awarded the 10k merit scholarship. Now I just have to wait to see if I got into my dual degree program.

I also have an interview with UW global health tomorrow.

I'm a little nervous.

Congrats to everyone that heard from Columbia today!

Hey Awk. I think that these scholarships are based on the scholarship addendum that you could include with your essay, so not everyone will get a page 2. However, there is a whole list of other scholarships on the Mailman website that we can still be considered for once we submit the Mailmain financial aid forms (this year's aren't available yet, but should be soon, I think).

Check it out: http://www.mailman.columbia.edu/pro...nding-options/scholarships-fellowships-grants

I'm sure her somberness didn't mean anything for you.....she's probably had tons of ppl calling her about their status and the fact that some ppls apps probably still say incomplete. I'm sure this time of year is really stressful for the admissions personnel....and just think, they have to deal with it three times a year!!

Congrats on both accounts! In re: your interview with UW, did you already have an informal phone interview before you submitted your application? I did that (as the app said it was strongly recommended), but now they are counting it as my real interview. I am wondering if that was a disservice, as I'd prefer a "real" interview once my app was submitted.

What a great day!! UCLA and Columbia within the past 24 hrs!

So far:

Accepted:
Columbia: Population and Family Health
UCLA: Community Health Sciences
WashU: MPH/MSW Dual

Waiting:
JHSPH: Health Behavior
UNC: Health Comm.

Well, I was accepted to Columbia -- MPH in Sociomedical Sciences. I also received the merit scholaraship.

I guess it's between Brown and Columbia (only applied to two mph programs). Honestly, though, I'm not so sure about Columbia now. I didn't know they accept 62% of the students last year that applied, and that over 500 attended. Doesn't that seem like a lot?

I'm kind of lost -- is it better to attend a smaller program (Brown -- 10 to 20 students) or a larger program (516 students)?

Thanks in advance.

I've been wondering the same thing. Personally, I feel like a larger program might be better because big student body = more faculty = more research opportunities to get involved with. But at the same time I want the professors to care about students and I don't want to feel like just a "number." I'd love to hear feedback from current MPH students on this subject.

yes -- my thoughts too. seems like there's both pros and cons to such a huge program. on the other hand, my program (Social Science Research in Public Health) seems like a great prep for the doctoral programs i want to apply to eventually. ah, the decisions 🙁

Well, as a former MPH student, making a good decision should be based on what environment do you think you thrive better in. Do you think you would excel in a much larger program or a much smaller program? Do you prefer having a student-faculty ratio of say 1:1 or say 50:1 (these are random numbers)? Columbia and Brown are great schools. And at the end of the day, your experience is what you make of the available opportunities.

Not sure where youre planning on ending up after school but I currently work in NYC gov't and everyone and their mother went to columbia. Going to the school would be incredibly helpful for getting a job in NYC as I have learned the university is very much connected to the city gov, and the contacts that youll make as a student will go a longgggg way during the jobhunt...

I never thought about it that way. Wow, thank you for some great input!! I very much appreciate it!

all other input is appreciated too, as I'm sure many of us thinking about attending Columbia. thanks in advance!

I agree with a lot of what mezmerized points out. I don't know how many students would prefer the hypothetical student-faculty ratio of 50:1 over 1:1 but I'm guessing the former ratio implies having more classmates to work with and network with, as well - something I like about large classes over small ones. There are more people doing what you're doing and therefore, you can potentially get more advice and help from each other (based on my personal experience with large vs. small classes).
