Accepted, Fall 2011!!!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I know there aren't a lot of you out on this forum who applied to Berkeley but I just wanted to let you know I got my acceptance email from them this morning. I applied to their MPH Epi/Biostats program and they've asked me to get them my decision before April 15th. I'm assuming after that date, they cast out for more students to fill in spots that might have opened up from people who choose to go elsewhere.

My stats, again, for anyone curious.

Undergrad: Graduated Berkeley 2001, GPA 3.89, major History
GRE: Q700, V700, AWA 5.5
Work experience: 2 years in health policy, 3.5 years in epi research
Additional coursework after college: intro to stats, 1 semester general chemistry, 1 semester molecular cell bio, 2 semesters calculus, general psychology

Hope to hear from other folks out there who applied/got accepted to the Epi/Biostats program.

Alice

Sorry if this has been covered on this thread-

But for Emory Epi people who have gotten acceptances/rejections- how long did it take to get your decision after you got the email stating your application had been sent to the dept for review?

I know the email said 3-6 weeks, I was just wondering if there was a general trend in length from the Epi Dept specifically (it's also been three weeks as of today for me, so I'm becoming even more obsessed with checking OPUS).

Thanks!

EMORY:Application sent to dept(EPI) on 11/18/10
Rejection from Epi and forwarded to Envirnt. Health on 12/8/10

on 1/27/11 i received the following mail

"The Environmental Health (EH) department has received your application for the EH MPH program for fall 2011. Your original personal statement was geared toward another program. Please submit an additional paragraph geared toward the EOH program outlining your experience and interest in the field. Please create a new document and send as an attachment; be sure to put your name, date, and “Environmental Health” on the top and email the statement directly to me.

Please submit this information within one week so we can review your file for next year's class.

Thank you for your application for the EH program. We look forward to hearing from you soon"

Now i'm working on a new sop🙁.

Anybody here applied to Envirnt health in Emory?

i've been accepted in Tulane and Drexel but my top choice is Emory:xf:.

Good luck ZJWAH

ooh congrats on the acceptance! I'm waiting to hear back from them too, when was your application complete with sophas?

Hey MPH11,

If you don't mind, when did you hear from Yale and Michigan? And when did you have everything submitted? Thanks 🙂

I heard from Yale early this week, and from Michigan about three weeks ago. I had everything submitted on Thanksgiving (11/27, 28ish?), and they mailed on 12/15.

Hi MPH11,

Congrats on the acceptances.

Please when did you submit your application to Yale? I submitted mine on the 7th of Nov and still haven't heard from them. What department did you apply to?
Do you mind sharing your stats?

I applied to EMD and ECD.

Thanks

Sorry, forgot about the basics. Like I said, I submitted to Yale around 11/28, SOPHAS mailed 12/15. I was accepted to EMD, which was my first choice; Hospital and Molecular Epi (HME) for Michigan.

Stats:

GPA: 3.4, graduated last year, a year early
GRE: 680V, 800M, 4.5W
Other: 2+ yrs. undergrad RA in various labs (molecular bio, social psych, etc.); summer research program in China; 2 yrs. e-board for campus club; 3 yrs. leadership in a bunch of music ensembles; random hospital volunteering, tutoring, elementary-age reading assistance. Currently working full-time in two different RA jobs, one genetic/molecular bio, the other social epi.

Accepted: UMich, Yale
Waiting: UW, Berkeley, UCLA, UIowa, Columbia, BU

Alice, Congrats! That is wonderful news!! I'm surprised that they already started sending the news out though. Thanks for the post - it's sooo very satisfying for someone like me who is desperate for Berkeley news!

Congrats again!
Angie

for those who have heard from Pitt, did you get an email?

I got an email on 1/24 letting me know I was accepted (SOPHAS was mailed 12/8) and then another on 1/27 with more detail. I also got a letter (small envelope) on 1/27 with the acceptance notification.

Hey, for those of you accepted to Tulane's MPH-epi program, does everyone have starts with "J" ends with "He" listed as faculty advisor? He was in my acceptance packet as advisor and I wasn't sure if this was a specific assignment or if he is advisor to all.

Thanks!

It should be pointed out out that it is not a good idea to mention specific names here, since these posts are freely searchable forever on Google and other search engines. Whenever someone searches on a faculty member's name, your post will always show up in the search results, and this may not be desired by that individual. I suggest editing your posts to remove the names. This issue comes up from time to time, and people need to be reminded.

I guess I didn't read the rules...

Post edited.

Thanks REM for the reply, this really helps with the decision process!

GRE 280 V 300 Q
GPA : 3.0
Accepted : UNC- Chapel Hill
Rejected- University of Washington

I am an international applicant I have 7 years experience working with as a public health physcian in disadvantaged populations in South America and Africa in rural communities. In this time I have investigated outbreaks of yellow fever, chagas and Dengue in Peru. Currently in charge of a health district. I was accepted by UNC- Chapel Hill. I have a G.P.A of 3.0, attended summer course at JHU and had distinctions. Honestly I am surprised I was accepted, but I am very religious person and I know God saw me through this one.

Posted to let everyone out there know that you can never know your chances till you try

Congrats on your acceptance to UNC- Chapel Hill. Which department did you apply to and how did you receive your notification (email/ snail mail)? How long did you have to wait between submission of apps and receiving your decision?
Waiting for my decision from UNC.
Really looking to attending UNC since it is No.1 on my list

Has anyone heard anything new about the Columbia financial aid app? I emailed them 2 weeks ago, and they said not to fill out an old one, but as of tonight, I don't see the new one up. I already filed my estimated FAFSA, but I wanted to make sure I wasn't just missing it.

I haven't seen anything either on the website or via email.

Has anyone out there applied or heard from UC-Denver? I'm wondering what their decision timeline is.

the email I received in january said that people would be informed about the school's decision in late march to early april. i don't know if the later date this year has anything to do with the application deadline being pushed back by two weeks.

i applied to the epidemiology program as well. good luck!

Finally heard back from a school today!

Accepted into Tulane's Department of Community Health Sciences and UGA's Health Promotion and Behavior program

SOPHAS mailed apps on 1/12

Me too, I finally heard from my first PH school. Drexel Environ. Health Department. My SOPHAS site says 'Admitted'. But, I don't have any other information. I take it they will be mailing things? I mean....I didn't even get an email. SOPHAS sent in everything on 1/11-12?. I heard from Drexel on Saturday. They move pretty quickly I guess.

Hi everyone,
just wondering if anyone else applied to the BU program with a bioethics concentration?

Yeah Drexel updated SOPHAS about a week before I even got an email from them. Then they send you more information via snail mail. But they are quick about updating SOPHAS, which is nice. Congrats!

wow literally was reading this forum sitting by my window, looked outside, saw the mailman, went out and...

UIC acceptance to MPH program in Epid! 🙂 🙂
YAY!!

Do they announce any scholarship / financial aid stuff in the snail mail? Is it a school that you are considering to attend....or are attending now? If you are, can I PM you with some additional questions? Thanks!

@ToxMan1: can you PM me too with any details you get? Are you considering Drexel? I also got word from them and am currently considering them 😀

I just got my first response this morning by email: rejected from Berkeley for MPH in Epi/Biostats. 🙁

I think the Epi/Biostat department may be processing more quickly, since I see only one other post about this today.

I applied to 7 schools total, so fingers crossed for the rest!

My stats, for comparison:
GRE: 770Q, 670V, 5.5AW
GPA: 3.61 in a semi-related field from Canadian university
Other: 3 years of health research experience in a university setting, first had 3 RA positions, then Research Coordinator, running multiple health services studies for 2 years; I've authored or co-authored 5 articles and several conference presentations.

braveheart22, what program in Tulane's Community Health Sciences did you apply to? My apps were sent out 1/5, and I haven't heard back yet. The wait is killing me. I applied to the Global MCH through Community Health Sciences.

Ah sorry about the rejection :/

But now looking at your stats (very impressive btw), I am more sure than ever I will be getting a rejection from them along with you 🙂

Hi ToxMan1,

Yes, they did send me scholarship info and financial aid stuff via snail mail. It was a school I was considering, but I think it is out of the running for me just because I got into other schools I was hoping to go to! But I did read a lot about it so you can PM me if you'd like. 🙂

ebp:

I applied to Tulane's dual MPH program in Maternal and Child Health and Health Education and Comm.

Good Luck. Hope you hear back soon! 🙂

PeriEpi2011,
I got a deny letter from Berkeley, too! Looking at your stats, I know immediately why I was denied.
My stats:
GPA: 3.52 by WES, Pharmaceutical Science
GRE: 630V 800Q 4.5AW
Come straight from undergrads, so no work experience.
Some volunteering experience, 1 year research experience in a pharmacology laboratory, chairman of several students' organizations(if that counts)
Accepted: Tulane, UPitts, UMN, Emory, UMich
Rejected: Berkeley
Awaiting: U of Washington, JHU, Harvard, Columbia

when did you submit your berkeley app?

MPH4life,
I submitted my SOPHAS app and Berkeley app on November 4th. SOPHAS mailed my material on November 24th.
Good luck with your application!

Undergrad GPA: 3.8
GRE: 1300
Rejected because of lack of work experience? Research, community service, campus activities, and volunteering didn't count. What am I supposed to do if companies to which I apply continuously reject my application, especially when they require either an advanced degree or work experience (or lighter skin tones)? Rejected because of low GRE scores? Can I sue my middle and high school math teachers for lazily teaching classes, or do I look at the school holistically? Given that the school's facing discipline for being one of the lowest performing in the area, it seems others besides myself have already suffered.

I never blamed the "systemic inequity" before this application season, but being rejected from schools because I don't have the work experience needed to compete with 30 and 40 year olds, who quit mid-career to suck up rare spots in admitted classes?

These schools would rather experiment on the causes behind depression and suicide in black men, than accept them into their schools to compete with the Indian and Chinese nationals, who'll end up taking what they learn back to their homelands while people in the US languish. Murdered in droves, I'd imagine an applicant from Detroit or Compton would be viewed in the same manner as someone hoping to escape Calcutta.

Maybe the hostage situation this past year was the "last straw" and "Diversity" has assumed a different meaning. Good news: Hispanics who escape the poverty in Latin America, you have a shot at the American Dream. Bad news: Black people, you've had your chance. Take the crumbs of what society leaves behind. The dream was just a dream. Wake up and finish mopping the floors. You'll need 3 references to mop Johns Hopkins Hospital after-hours, though, so don't get your hopes up.

Black people, stop having children...for the children's sake

Um, I'm black and have yet to receive an acceptance letter and I go to an Ivy, so trust, don't blame black procreation on your rejection. Thanks.

Although it definitely sounds like you have a strictly objective and obviously well studied approach to the issues of racism/poverty/other oppressive things, this is neither the forum nor the thread for your specific grievances. Please take your issues to the relevant discussion sites. SDN even has a whole thread for the underrepresented. Use that.

Got accepted to Tulane today, epi department. I've been kind of preoccupied with hearing from Yale, so it was surprising to hear from a different school. So that makes:
Acceptances: GW (received mid Dec.), Tulane (received early Jan.)
Waiting: Yale, Berkeley, Emory, UCLA, UPitt, BU, SDSU, Columbia

Also as some people above mentioned, I don't think I am getting into Berkeley either with the way my stats look (posted earlier if you want to know). I talked to a woman at a grad school fair and she said that they didn't care about work experience for the epi/biostats department, but I don't really know about that. Seems like they do.

For those who have heard back from Tulane, how were you notified?

I received my acceptance packet today for the Epi MS program at Tulane. I am wondering how selective/competitive is an MS program? I know there are very few students currently enrolled but is this simply because not very many people apply for an MS vs an MPH?

For those who have heard back from Tulane, how were you notified?

srpspartan i was notified via snail mail. Tulane received my application sometime around the second week of January and I received my acceptance package today. The acceptance letter was dated January 24th.

I submitted SOPHAS on Dec 1st!

Was mailed on December 21st.

To the others that are waiting for Berkeley: did you apply to Epi/Biostat specialty or a different one? Good luck!

Still waiting: University of Washington(!!), Harvard, Columbia, JHU, Emory, and UBC (Canada)

Hello Friends,

Yale sent me my decision email today......BANG....a rejection!!!! Well, I don't know why i feel so bad about it even though I was not planning to go there in the first place?
I'm still waiting on JHU, Harvard, Uni Wash, Columbia.
The rejection even gave me bad dreams. I saw their stats for last year, Out of 2200 applications they only accepted 117!
Harvard and Uni Wash I am waiting oh!

I posted a while back with stats, if anyone's interested but - I just heard from UNC in an e-mail this AM.

So as of now I am

Accepted: Emory (Global Health), Yale (SBS w/ Global Health conc.), UMich (HPM and HBHE), UNC (HBHE)

Waiting: Harvard, University of Washington, BU, Columbia, NYU, Berkeley, Hunter.

I submitted my FAFSA a while ago and am hoping for financial aid. UMich HPM has offered 1/2 tuition for both years - but it is still quite expensive!

Ooh me too! Although SOPHAS didn't mail mine until the 28th...

I applied to Epi/Biostat as well, guess I should get the rejection soon 😛

I submitted SOPHAS on Dec 1st!

I applied to the Epi/Biostat MPH at Berkeley as well. My app was mailed by SOPHAS 12/08. But based on the posts above, I'm not too hopeful! Oh well.

PHprospect,
Did UMich offer you 1/2 tuition in the admission decision email? I was accepted by UMich, too. But they said nothing about the fund.🙁

MandyL,

The offer was made in the acceptance e-mail - they wanted me to reply by the end of Jan, but I asked for more time (esp b/c I am applying to a dual degree and haven't heard from the other school yet). They gave me until the end of Feb (with a possible extension if I still haven't heard).

I'm really excited about Michigan - but even with 1/2 tuition it is still more expensive than UNC. - I guess I'll see what happens!
