Accepted, Fall 2011!!!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
MandyL,

The offer was made in the acceptance e-mail - they wanted me to reply by the end of Jan, but I asked for more time (esp b/c I am applying to a dual degree and haven't heard from the other school yet). They gave me until the end of Feb (with a possible extension if I still haven't heard).

I'm really excited about Michigan - but even with 1/2 tuition it is still more expensive than UNC. - I guess I'll see what happens!
I applied to the Epi program. The tuition is really expensive...sigh...I'm an international applicant, so I'm not eligible for financial aid🙁
Congrats on your acceptances!

UPDATE: I know someone mentioned BU a while back, just received an email back stating that they will be sending out the first round of decisions in the next two weeks.

I didn't get that BU email, but I called them this morning and was told the same thing.

BU has become "The Little Boy Who Cried Wolf" for me, they've told me and others on this forum "decisions will be out soon" or "in the next week or two" so many times that I've stopped checking the mail for it. Someone else posted that they said the last week of January/first week of February specifically (which was last week and this week we are in). Not to say they aren't telling the truth this time, but I won't be stalking the mailman 🙂.

I know schools are busy and the weather affects some days, but I guess this is one of those times that explains the positive side of schools giving uber vague responses to timeline questions. When they start giving out specifics and then not following up on it it's a little disheartening.

At the bottom of this page on their newly redone website (so it should have been changed if it's incorrect): http://sph.bu.edu/Application-Requirements/application-process/menu-id-235.html

it states that it should be 2-4 weeks before you get a decision once you application is complete. It does say in fine print that they don't review Fall until Spring applications are reviewed but I just think it's false advertising, if you aren't going to start reviewing fall apps until after the New Year then just say that.

Anyhoo, BU was my first choice about 6 months ago. The way that they have handled the application process for me has made me write them off completely. Obviously this is just my opinion and I still think BU is a great school and it's a good choice for anyone who sees it as a good fit, they just soured my experience overall.

I completely agree with you. Although I haven't written BU off enough to pull my application, their handling of the decision process has not impressed me and they will have to offer me a lot of non-loan aid to get back in the game.

I do admit it's annoying to be told one thing and then have another thing actually occur, but I wouldn't write off BU just yet. This winter weather we've been having has really slowed things down for a lot of campuses and the woman on the phone sounded exhausted from having to explain the weather predicament. I think if we hadn't been getting snow storm after snow storm BU would have been much more likely to have gotten our decisions out sooner!

BU has still been monumentally better than Columbia in the way they handle their applications, in my opinion...

hi.wen did u send ur stuff to sophas?i m waiting on utsph too

Checked Opus on a whim today (just didn't want to get out of bed in this blizzard) and got accepted to Emory for epi. I was so surprised. so...
Accepted: Emory, Tulane, GW
Waiting: UCLA, Berkeley, Yale, Columbia, UPitt, SDSU, BU

At so many points in the process I was convinced I wasn't going to get in anywhere, so this is great.

Really still waiting for Yale. I'm pretty nervous about it, since the program is so small and their acceptance rates are smaller than a lot of other programs.

hi, i sent in my stuff to sophas on 12/15, and it was mailed to the schools on 1/13 ..but i never heard back from utsph saying they've received my app (the other schools DID email me with that notification)

It was an informal email letting me know to look for the official acceptance package in the mail over the next week and a half.

Nice! Can't wait to get some response from them as well LOL. Any type of response will do hahahaha. Congrats!

Hello everyone,

Just got two accepts this week: UC Berkeley(Epi, 1 year MPH program), JHU(MHS in mental health)
Rejection: UMich
Waiting: Yale, Harvard, Columbia

Congrats! When was your application complete with Emory? Mine was on 12/16/10 and I still haven't heard anything from them.

It was mailed from SOPHAS on Dec. 29th and I got an email from them on Jan. 18th saying that my application was complete and forwarded to the epi department.

do you mind sharing your stats? I applied to JHU as well and the wait is killing me. Submitted my app Dec 6th due to the glitch in their system. Wasn't verified as complete until january 3rd or something.

This makes me nervous! SOPHAS mailed mine on 12/15 and I got the email saying my application was being forwarded to the epi dept on 1/7. I still haven't heard anything.

Did you apply for the MPH in epi or the MSPH? I applied for the MSPH, maybe that has something to do with it. 😕

I had the same thing happen to me, my application wasn't listed as complete until Janruary 11! Does anyone know what their timeline as been for getting decisions out? The wait is slowly driving me insane and I'm sure that this horrendous weather isn't going to help at all.

Has anyone heard back from UW? I read something on here that they would be sending invites to interview in late Jan. I am starting to think new news = bad news...

I applied to the Health Policy concentration.

Correction: NO news = bad news.

I'm getting nervous about Emory too. My app was forwarded to the department on 12/16 which was 7 weeks ago and I still haven't heard anything about them giving it to my second choice department or anything. Calling them resulted in pretty much no info. Ugh! Is there anywhere on OPUS where it says which department is reviewing ur app? Mine just says I applied for Public Health, but not the specific department.

heard back from uc davis...no go.....shrugs

Hmm, I was going to call them too. But I guess that won't be much help since you had no such luck.

OPUS just lists Public Health for me as well too. And it doesn't mention the department at all. I also haven't been notified about them sending it to my second choice either. Urgh! This is annoying.

I applied to the MS in Epi at UW and haven't heard anything from them. But last time I checked their website it said they will send out notifications in mid-Feb, so I wouldn't worry too much just yet.

For the emory people still waiting - my app was forwarded to the dept on 12/1 and i didn't hear back (accepted to my first choice dept!!) until 1/24. So about 8 weeks from when i got that forwarded to the dept email!

I did mention interviews a little while back at UW, but I think they are unique to the global health and/or PCMI track. I had an interview last week and they said we should have a final decision by early March. PM me if you want to know more, but I think it's different for different degrees/departments/tracks so my situation might not give you too much insight. Sorry I don't have any more definitive news!

Hi

I applied to UW (MPH in epi). I emailed the admin staff two days back and they got back to me yesterday. They said we should be hearing soon, sometime later this week. They just finished with the reviews.
Fingers crossed ! good luck to you !

Hi people,

Did any international Emory MPH candidate receive the Emory merit award? Has Emory made decisions on the merit awards?
What are other funding options available for international students at Emory?

Thanks

I'm not an international student, but this link from the acceptance packet has a list of all the merit awards. It says that contenders for the awards will be notified via email at the beginning of March and interviewed by phone mid-March. It says that final decisions are made after Visit Emory (scheduled March 24-25). However, someone on this forum said that they received a full funding offer with a stipend, so maybe there are other merit opportunities outside this list that they provided. This is what they say is available though. Sounds like there's nothing extra for us to do other than to just check our email for an invitation to interview for the scholarships...good luck!!

I applied for the MPH. I don't think the timing should make you more nervous than the normal amount of nervousness everyone feels. Timing seems to be random as some of the other posts have mentioned.

My Emory application was forwarded to the Epi department on 1/18. I applied to the MSPH and haven't heard anything yet...fingers crossed!

I also haven't heard anything from UW MPH. I had what I think was an interview for the MCH track in December. It was rather informal, but I think will serve as my interview. For the general programs, I don't think they do interviews.

Where on the UW site does it say anything about when we will find out?

Anyone know the timeline for Harvard or Columbia?

Also...is anyone else applying to the MHS at JHU? The deadline is Feb 1, so I don't imagine we'll hear soon...but hopefully they process quickly!

Harvard said decisions will be mailed out at the end of feb/first two weeks of march.

I think we should hear by ALL the schools within the next 6 weeks (maybe even sooner--but no later than 6 weeks from now).

I have not heard anything from any of my schools (emory, hsph, bu, uw) :-( (submitted dec. 5. 2010).

Tulane emailed me an acceptance letter today which informed me that I would be recieving the formal acceptance packet within two weeks. Funny how I already received it two days ago. I guess they are behind on their emails...By the way i live on the west coast.

Sure, it's not good though, I'm just lucky

GPA: 3.69, double major in Chinese medicine and biomedicine
TOEFL:99
GRE:V470 Q780 AWA3.0(terrible)
Exchagne student to Japan, clinical electives in USA.
Various volunteering in my country. Nothing special.

Submitted on Dec 6th, Verified on Dec 20th.

anthrovagabond, Brown has only made it through the first round of applications. These applications have not even been submitted to anthrovagabond, Brown has only made it through the first round of applications. These applications have not even been submitted to the graduate school yet. The woman I spoke with said that if the program accepts you, there's a 99% chance of being fully accepted. If you submitted early, you may be on this list. I didnt apply to Columbia so I can't speak on that.

Thanks Awapi, who knows we might end up in the same school, lets keep in touch as we sit tight and wait for the other school decisions.

thanks a ton for the reply! it's my guess that we'll hear sometime next week, or at least that's what i'm hoping.

It seems that Columbia is a bit disordered this year.

at the very minimum, i was accepted to emory and oxford for programs in the social sciences; however, i'm really crossing my fingers i hear from and accepted to Brown's mph program. hopefully when they submit the apps to the grad school the decision will be sent prompt
y -- though the weather has been awful this week.

Hi,

Can anyone who has heard from Yale let me know at what date your application was listed as complete? I received the application complete e-mail on January 4th and was just curious when I should expect to hear back. Thank you!

I hope its soon! Providence caught the southern tail of this storm. Personally, we clocked in with two new feet of snow, but I think they were only hit with rain and sleet. I dont think Brown shut down. I do know, for those interested in BU, they did shut down. From Boston to my house, there were over 1,000 school closing. BU may be a bit behind, but for those waiting just give them some time. Boston is a nightmare during the fallout of a snowstorm.

I suppose I should post my stats, etc.
I'm 25 and have an MS in Health Science from a large state school. I finished my BA in Communications from a small East Coast liberal arts school.
GPA: MS - 3.7; BA - 3.6
GRE: V - 570; Q - 610; AW - 5.0
MCAT: 30T (I took this three years ago when I thought I wanted to be a doctor. Oh, how wrong I was)
LOR: I know these were strong. I did not read them, but made sure only to ask people who Id worked closely with.
SOP: I found one error Ive been obsessing over, though my mother really wishes I would stop.
Other fun stuff: I have been a ski instructor for the past three years in the Rocky Mountains. Ive also spent a lot of time traveling the Northern Rockies to fly fish. In these travels I was able to meet and stay with many different types of people, mostly underserved. I focused my SOP on how this affected me. I have since moved back to New England. My MS research was on issues effecting quality and access to emergency department care. I also did a large project focused on estrogen deficiencies in pre-menopausal women (woot for signaling pathways!).

Initially, I only applied to Brown and UC-Denver, both in November. I had a bit of a panic attack over the break having read acceptances were being sent, so I added GW and Drexel to that list. SOPHAS was mailed in mid Jan.

Acceptances:
Rejections: None
Waiting on: Drexel, GW, and UC-Denver

Hello! I received the application complete email from Yale on November 5th and received my acceptance on December 27th. (I live on the West Coast, though. The letter was dated on December 22nd). My guess is that they may be moving more quickly now than that, but that is only speculation. Good luck to you!!
