Accepted to UPenn but not attending?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
As there are only a few more days to make that all-important decision, is anyone else withdrawing from UPenn? I also want to share some info I got from Ms. Sheffler when she returned my call from last week. She said that at this time, the committee is actively reviewing certain candidates. She will be calling those students on behalf of the committee and see what's up---what schools that they are considering and if UPenn is their preferred school. She said my application was not in this situation but is still being considered. Now, I am not really sure what that means. I am conjecturing that the students whose files are being actively reviewed are those on the high part of the Tier 1 waitlist, but my slightly pessimistic side tells me that they have started considering regular Tier 1 waitlist people and I am not one of them. Ms. Sheffler is really cool and nice and she knows how much I want to go there and she may not want to kill all my hope by saying that. Am I being paranoid? Can anyone confirm this by calling or ask some more information? Any Penn Med students or undergrads have any idea about this? I would really appreciate any information. Also, she mentioned that she could not estimate my chances for admission because it was too early and that she would contact me as the waitlist moves this summer if my situation changes. By summer, does she mean that I probably will not be considered until June or later or does she consider after May 15th as the summer. I am sorry if I seem spaztic. I just love UPenn so much and I want to go there so badly. Good luck everyone! Less than a week until major waitlist movement! 🙂 :luck: :luck: :luck:

BUMP! When I posted, the thread did not move up!

Take that, rewind it back. DrJ got the beat make the thread go bump! :d

OK, DrJ2B, that last thread crossed a line.
ANyway, I have absolutely no interest in Penn's waitlist movement at all--I didn't even get an iinterview, but it is impossible to even browse SDN and not be aware of your plight, and obsession with Penn. Plus, I remember you from the Hopkins waitlist thread. So, I want to wish you the best of luck--I think you may love Penn more than most of the faculty. I have a friend who got in off the waitlist last year, so I will see what happened in his case to give you some idea of what to expect. Take it easy. At this point all you can do is relax--chemically, if necessary, and n your case that may be necessary.

Hey Benjo!

I do sound like I need a sedative, don't I? 😴 I am just so anxious, scared, hopeful, worried,......you name it I probably am feeling it. It is just so hard to want to go somewhere so badly and not know about your chances! 😱 Good luck everyone! I will try to calm myself down. I have done all I can. I just have to wait. :luck: :luck: :luck: :luck: 🙂

you remind me of this kid, a few years back, who instead of mailing his application to Stanford, took a road trip to deliver it and along the way made a video or something. He really wanted to go to stanford so he gave them the video to show how excited he was about it.

he did not get in. they made some comment if he had put that kind of effort into school he'd not have any problem getting in.

moral: you don't know if you'll get in, but being a tool certainly won't help.

i dunno, everyone i know who applied ot penn is a high waitlist person...i think there's alot of people on it. Goodluck, but don't bother admissions (like those people that mail a door with a shoe glued on..."just to get my foot in the door").

I have read a book on med school admission, and the author quoted an admission officer that that had happened before. It was on the section about how you should do creative things, but not to the point of "weird".

Med school is different from College in that maturity is much more important than standing out in an unexpected way.

I don't think anyone is being a tool here. These schools *want* to know that applicants are enthusiastic and will often give priority to those who demonstrate a committment to their school. I definitely think that Gaye appreciated my enthusiasm, and that it got me off the waitlist a bit earlier than I would have otherwise. Anyway, DrJ2B has been nothing but supportive of everyone on these boards, and I hope he'll be one of my classmates next year!

DrJ2B is doing precisely what he should do regarding Penn. I have contacted the admissions office and they have told me that they want people who show a lot interest in the school.

Tier 1 is unranked according to the admissions people and it seems like Penn will probably use Tier 1 this year (judging by the relatively small number of people accepted so far). DrJ2B is obviously a great applicant (why else would he have gotten accepted into Pitt or gotten interviews at Hopkins, Yale AND Penn). Penn would be foolish not to admit such a good applicant with such enthusiasm for the school.

DrJ2B, I am rooting for you!

Thank you so much Grumpy Bear and Bigbaubdi! I really appreciate all the kinds words and support. I called UPenn today and have my thoughts about UPenn reaffirmed once again. Not only was the secretary awesome, she took my name and number down. I was promptly called by one of the admissions committee members who was so helpful in answering all my questions and offering the best advice in pursuing my interest in UPenn. Although I may never get in, I do not regret at all applying to UPenn. I want it so badly as I mentioned to the adcom member, but they accept to many awesome people (Grumpy Bear included of course). It would be a privilege to grace their campus with my footsteps. Regardless of the ranking systems, UPenn is and has always been the best medical school for me. I appreciate everyone's support and, regardless of the outcome, I will be okay. I am happy in the fact that I at least made it to the waitlist and was interviewed for the EDP. Good luck to everyone accepted to UPenn and all those on the waitlists! Make sure UPenn knows how badly you want to go there! 🙂 :luck: :luck: :luck: :luck:

I know I will probably cause a bit of a stir, but I've got to say this anyway...
DrJ2B, it is very obvious that you have an interest in UPenn. You know it, we know it, and they know it. Equally obvious is the fact you are using SDN to "communicate" to them. You are aware of the fact that they can deduce your real name by the information you are providing (i.e. you talked today to an admissions dude) and are hoping they read all of this and think "Gosh, we should really admit this kid." I honestly think your obsession is a bit over-the-top, making your real motives painfully obvious.

I really do wish you the best of luck, but you've just got to relax. Go for a jog or something.

DrJ...it's official. I've written the check to Pitt, and I'm going to send it out tomorrow. Tomorrow will also be the day I'll click on that "withdraw application" button on Penn's website (or get a friend to do that since I don't know if I have the heart to). This was an incredibly difficult decision for me, but I think it's for the best. I hope you get the spot! :luck:

Dude. You're causing a stir because you don't know anything about the people you are making claims about. DrJ2B has been just as enthusiastic in his (her?) PMs with me. So there =P

I concur.

PianoGirl -- wow you withdrew from UPenn to go to Pitt....that's pretty cool...I'm glad you found a connection with that school. I'm deciding between two schools, including penn at the moment...my god is this a hard decision!!

Neuronix said:
Congrats pianogirl! I wonder how you made your decision? I know you were waiting for financial info, and I wonder if Pitt made you an offer you couldn't refuse 🙂

Good luck!

I wish! Unfortunately, none of my schools made me any such offer. So I considered each school and how it fit my needs, learning style, budget, etc. My decision had a lot to do with location (Pitt is in a smaller, safer city that is slightly farther from home) and finances (the PA resident discount helps a little, and the cost of living in Pittsburgh is very affordable), because in terms of curriculum and reputation, Pitt and Penn are both top-notch. I don't think I could have gone wrong with either school. This was definitely one of the hardest decisions I've ever had to make, but I'm confident that it will turn out well.

BTW, Neuronix, thanks for all your advice along the way. Keep in touch! 🙂

Thanks Newquagmire and thewebthsp for having my back! I am just overly obsessed with UPenn and always want to talk about it. My friends know I cannot have a conversation without mentioning UPenn in it at least once. That is just me. I use SDN as a group of premed buddies that know how I am feeling and can empathize with me. For the most part, my friends are not premed and those that are will be taking a year off before applying. This is sort of my journal or diary of sorts where I can just be myself and have people who are in the same or similar situation to chat with. SDN has been such a great support for me. I get the best advice here and more support than I could imagine. I apologize for being overzealous and I am really going to try to calm down. I will keep everyone posted with anything that happens and I thank you all again for all of your support. Good luck again to those waiting. Waitlist movement is right around the corner. 🙂 :luck: :luck:

Now that May 15th has rolled around, has anyone else withdrawn from UPenn? 🙂

So the start of massive waitlist movement is today! Good luck everyone! :luck: Please post if and when you get that important call and please mention what waitlist position (high part of tier 1 or tier 1) you were on. Thanks so much! 🙂

Anyone get some good news today? 😀

I got an email today from Director Sheffler asking me to call her tomorrow morning. I am really, really hoping that this email is what I think it is... :scared:

I am on waitlist tier 1 (not top top)

Congrats! I really hope it is an acceptance although I doubt she would contact you for any other reason than that! Way to go! You definitely deserve this! I am sure the same will happen with Hopkins since I know that is your top choice! 🙂

When you mean not top top, do you mean that your status page said just "Waitlist Tier 1". If that is so, UPenn has moved on to the regular Tier 1. I might have a chance! Thanks so much for the update! 😀

i talked to her also. it is good news, but i think she wants to know where penn stands, and if you commit you're likely to get in...best of luck, i got the call last week and i was at the "top" of tier 1.

Anyone get some good news or found anything new about the waitlist movement? 🙂

Hey Brickhouse!

Long time no chat. I moved back home so I no longer have fast internet access. I hate dial-up. I would be happy to win an award for persistence. Any new info I can gain is important. I really hope waitlist movement will continue so I have a chance to get in. I honestly do not know what else I can do but try to wait and be as patient as possible.

With that said, anyone hear anything new today? 😀

Anything on just the MD class or is everything at Penn Med full up?

TheFlash and DrJ2B, thanks for all of the support. It has been a long road but I think I can see the light at the end of the tunnel.

The news definitely was good when I called on Wednesday morning! Basically, she told me that I had a spot at Penn and that she was not going to place any pressure on my decision. She asked me what my status is right now - where I am accepted currently and where I am waitlisted. She said that she would assist by scheduling revisits, opportunities to talk with other students etc..

Right now, I am in the process of scheduling a revisit.

Congratulations man!! 🙂 🙂 Penn is an AWESOME school. I would love to go there (too bad I'll get rejected when I apply..but still...I'd love to go there). What an accomplishment!! **tips his hat for you**

Congrats man! UPenn is phenomenal and I am sure you will see that is the case when you go revisit it. 😍 Did Ms. Sheffler happen to mention anything about how waitlist movement is going? Since she is not pressuring you, do you think that you were among the last people given a spot? Is UPenn full as of now? I would really appreciate any info. Thanks and once again congrats and all the best! 🙂

Bumpity bumpalicious bump! 🙂

Harps and Berkeley, thanks very much for the support. I am really fortunate that things have shaped up this way.

DrJ2B, I will be calling the admissions office this morning and I will try to get some more info on the situation with the waitlists.

Ahh, but Wawa has much more than just slushies. They have great inexpensive coffee, decent subs (especially for late night), a full line of inexpensive and yummy cold drinks (try the diet iced tea or iced coffee drinks), Wawa ice cream, free ATM, and more stuff I'm forgetting. If I moved away from this area, I would miss Wawa alot.

Not on Wawa's payroll,

Hey DrJ2B,

I know all about the Wawa! My uncle and his two sons work at Penn and I had a nice vegetarian sandwich at the Wawa when I visited them.

Because of Memorial day weekend, I will put off my visit to Penn until next Friday. She implied that I probably need to come to a decision by the end of next week.

I asked about the general waitlist situation but she didn't tell me anything too specific. I couldn't get her to tell me how many people would be pulled off the waitlist but she did say that Penn would be pulling people off the waitlist throughout the month of June. She said that if you are interested in Penn, keep sending stuff because the admissions committee is always interested in finding out if you are still interested. I will try to get more information as time goes on.

Good luck to all (esp. DrJ2B!)

Thank you so much bigbaubdi! I cannot even express how much I appreciate you calling for waitlist info and posting it. I will wait as long as the day before class starts to get in. I will make sure to send some more stuff (my Spring semester grades and a new LOR). When I visited UPenn before I applied, I must have gone into the Wawa 5 times. I am happy to see you know all about it. I am sure it will be a staple place to get munchies when you hopefully decide to go to UPenn. I know I do not have to say this but please take your time to just walk around the UPenn campus and feel how welcoming it is. 😍 When I first visited there, I knew it was the place for me. 😍 I think you will find the same thing. The campus is so gorgeous during the Spring time. I really hope you enjoy your revisit and thank you once again for posting new info. 🙂

Any good news lately? Any more info about waitlist movement? Holla at a brotha! 😀

Well...one more spot should be available at least...

I was in the top of the top tier of the waitlist group and got the call from Gaye about ten days ago. She kind of unofficially offers you an acceptance and asks what she can do to help you make your decision- revisit, speak with students, faculty, etc. They put no pressure on you to rush with the decision or to choose Penn, although maybe this will change as orientation approaches. It was hard turning them down, but another school gave me an offer I couldn't refuse (lion's head on my pillow).

It's a great school and I hope those of you who want to go there are accepted! I did my undergrad there, as well as post-bac, and I think Philly is a great, laid-back city. In case you are accepted, here's some of my favorite places to hang out after living here:

1) Ortlieb's Jazz Haus on North 3rd Street. It looks like a dive from the outside, but inside it's beautiful, had a great New Orleans style menu last time I was there, and attracts some of the best live jazz in the city. The owner is a saxophonist who sits in with the band sometimes. They've got Anchorsteam on tap too, which is pretty rare in Philly. Just don't sit right next to the piano...

2) Sugar Mom's in the Olde City. It's hard to find- half a block north of Lucy's through a parking lot. One of the most mixed, unpretentious bars in the city. Good music, friendly bartenders, a foosball table, and you can sit at a grand piano and drink if you get there early enough. Sort of punk rock atmosphere but attracts the business crowd too.

3) Monk's for the mussels and Hoegaarden. Oh, and Fergie's, owned by the same guy (Fergie), has a great juke box with plenty of Pixies, Pogues, Johnny Cash, etc. for your listening pleasure.

4) White Dog on Sansom on Penn's campus has one of the best happy hours that i know of. That's where I go for local microbrews (really cheap every Sunday-Thurs from 10-12). Surprisingly not many people tend to know about this.

5) I'm an avid hiker too, and just a warning- while the Appalachian Trail is very accessible from Philly, the trails are covered with rocks almost all the way through the state. The Delaware Water Gap on the Jersey side has less rocky trails and if you can find the right camp site, I've seen some incredible lightning storms over the river.

Hope that whetted your appetite!

Anyway, best of luck DrJ2B et al.
