Have any of you ever owned one of these books? It's published by Purdue Press and costs $20 (with the 10%.) I'm thinking about ordering the one for 2012 but, didn't know if it was worth it or not.

Also, do any of you know when this book will be mailed out? It's currently on pre-order and unless I'm missing something the date isn't posted anywhere.

Nevermind, found the publishing date

I got it many years ago when I was in undergrad and it was very valuable to me! I loved it. It was very organized and told you information about the town the school is located in, how much everything costs, dates, and breakdowns of anything you can imagine in different charts in the back of the book. A lot of the info in there like requirements for schools is free on that same website you apply for VMCAS on, but I like having everything in 1 place and can look through on my own, or anywhere I take it.

Type "VMSAR" in the search this forum tab....

I had tried looking for a thread before posting and did not see this one. I know how to search the forum though...

I was just trying to start a more recent conversation about it.

Thanks for the link too.

I bought it and found it useless. Essentially, it's just a compiled list of each school's requirements and statistics.... which you can find on each school's website... for free. I was nice to have all that information in one place, but I could have easily just printed the information out on my own. I wouldn't recommend getting it.

I thought the VMSAR was very helpful in terms of making choices about which schools I wanted to apply to. I was able to flip through and, in a matter of minutes, cross off all the American programs that required prerequisites I hadn't taken/didn't want to take. I then spent another few minutes nixing any remaining programs that accepted too few OOS applicants. From there, I was left with a much shorter and more manageable list of schools to investigate further.

I would buy it again in a heartbeat.

Ditto on the convenience of having all the information in one spot. Very helpful when you're lying in bed at night obsessing about what schools to apply to - reach over to the book on the nightstand and look up that one statistic or whatever that you need to know RIGHT THIS SECOND. 😀

I'm a little impatient when I get fixated on something...

When I graduated undergrad most of the schools had minimal info online...and we still had to type applications. So then the VMSAR was golden. When I revisted the concept of vet schools last year, VMCAS had so much info linked in that I didn't feel the need to buy it.

ditto.

I got it for the 2015 cycle (even though I've decided to apply for the 2016 cycle). Very useful to have everything in one place. Also, it's helpful to have the acceptance rates to compare in order to determine whether it is worth it to apply OOS 👍👍

If anyone would like a gently used free copy (I'll even throw in postage!) of this year's edition, PM me and it is yours! I also found it a handy way to compare pre-reqs, ect, and I doubt the info changes dramatically each year...

I'll edit this if it gets claimed... Book has been claimed!

Sent you a PM 😀

I like the idea of having all the information together. It will save me time and effort I'm sure.

Does it have information on what schools are looking for? I'm sure it has statistics but, didn't know if it had anything other than that.

Not so much what schools are looking for, but it does have a nice blurb on the school (which may say something about diversity in applicants or whatnot), and it does have breakdowns for many schools about how much everything is weighted in the process. There's also info about tuition, # applied vs. # accepted/matriculated and deadlines for each school.

I have ones from 2009 and 2005 that I'm happy to mail any SDN members for free if they pay shipping and handling ($2.50 each, ime, from shipping a whole bunch of other books.) PM me if interested!
