not a big reader, but in january, I think reading Martyr by Kaveh Akbar changed that for me. it was so good. it was honestly just immediately captivating. i read it in a day and a half which is a record breaking for me, because i normally take my sweet time. also read What Lies In The Woods this summer and it was really good for any thriller/mystery fans!! for non fiction i recommend both of Ed Yong’s books.

i have a ton on the shelf waiting to be read. in the middle of sister outsider by audre lorde. slaughterhouse five by kurt vonnegut. jazz by toni morrison. trying to get some more classics under my belt.

any queer recommendations, PLEASE drop them! especially sapphic, i am desperate at this point for something good. not big into the romance genre specifically but if it’s good, i will try it.

She Who Became the Sun by Shelley Parker-Chan. My absolute favourite book of all time! It's a historical fantasy retelling of the founding of China's Ming Dynasty, sapphic focused & with a lot of queer characters.

Off the top of my head, some other great books with sapphic & queer main characters, but not necessarily fully romance focused books I adored were Detransition, Baby by Torrey Peters & Siren Queen by Nghi Vo. Our Wives Under the Sea by Julia Arnfield (this is a horror). I also liked This Is How You Lose the Time War by Amal El-Mohtar & Max Gladstone, though I would say the romance in that is more the main focus.

I have also heard good things about Gideon the Ninth but I haven't read it yet.

I’m still reading Onyx Storm, so scared to finish it
…but if anyone needs any book recs and is a fan of romantasy, I just read A Feather So Black and it’s SO GOOD

:smack:Yall officially pushed my “to read” list up to 60 books.

Since everyone seems to be a fan of fantasy/adventure, if you don’t mind a young adult book, I LOVED the Skulduggery Pleasant series by Derek Landy. Never finished it because they kept coming out as I got older, but planning on going back to it soon!

Harry Potter series. I know JKR is problematic, but I grew up with the books and they were a true light for me at a hard time.
The DaVinci Code by Dan Brown
Crazy Rich Asians trilogy by Kevin Kwan
I loved Nancy Drew as a kid, along with The Saddle Club series.

I WAS OBSESSED WITH THE SADDLE CLUB!!! I've never come across anyone else who has even heard of that series! I also watched the TV series obsessively.

I'm still a Harry Potter fan. JKR does suck though

Also loved the Thoroughbred series as a kid! 🙂 I was a horse girl with no horse as a child.

Oh hey…check out my “childhood books” bookshelf currently in my guest bedroom. I was a horse girl WITH a horse. I’m hoping my bestie’s kid is also obsessed so someone can read these again someday. I did reread them in college.

Tuesdays with Morrie is one of my favorite books too!!

I love Chuck Palahniuk, so I'm currently reading Pygmy for the first time. In his usual fashion I feel sick to my stomach only a few pages in. Palahniuk truly uses his talent for evil & I love him for it... the more horrified I get the more I want to know...

-The Lunar Chronicles by Marissa Meyer (love love love these books!!)
-Septimus Heap by Angie Sage (definitely intended for a younger audience but who cares lol - these books held a special place in my heart as a kid and I still think they are so well done and underrated!)
-The Illuminae Files by Amie Kaufman and Jay Kristoff (absolutely blows my mind)

The lunar chronicles are such incredible books!!! One of my absolute favorites of all time

Just finished book number three of the year! Finally read The Handmaid’s Tale and was not expecting the ending. Feeling some feelings at the moment.

Next on the list is The Last Murder At the End of the World by Stuart Turton, then Mothearer by Linda Codega.

Queer-inclusive fantasy books that are also excellent include :

Godkiller series by Hannah Kaner
The Priory of the Orange Tree (and its prequel) by Samantha Shannon .

Apologies if these have already been discussed!

I just finished The New Couple in 5B by Lisa Unger and thought it was really good! Thriller, a little spooky at times. Some good twists.

Wheeee book thread book thread

I think I'm at 10 finished books so far this year. Mostly garbage romance and romantasy. My current TBR is about 140 books/series long and I RNG whenever it is time to pick something new 😂

I'm currently rereading via graphic audio Iron Flame, and reading These Hollow Vows. I do maintain a up to date Goodreads and Fable account that I started in January also so I can actually remember the books I've read and better keep track of books I want book trophies of

Does anyone have an alternative to good reads? I'd love not to support Bezos or Amazon (recently was able to cancel my last autoship), and it looks like they acquired it back in 2023.

I've heard really good things about Fable! I'm pretty sure I saw that it's queer women owned too. I don't really track my reading (oops) but yeah definitely staying away from good reads

I love garbage romance and romantasy!! The only way that I can keep all my books straight is Goodreads and spreadsheets

I've heard good things about Story Graph. I tried transferring all my stuff from Goodreads but I don't have the time to make the full transfer. I also do some ARC reading and need to post reviews on Goodreads so I'm stuck with it for now

I'm maintaining both Goodreads and Fable and I really like the Fable platform. I'd stop updating Goodreads entirely but I have friends that use it so we keep track of each other's reads on there.

Oh and Fable let's you import all your Goodreads lists and friends so you can switch over pretty efficiently

Link for referral code to get $5 towards an ebook if anyone wants it: https://fable.co/invite/?referralID=ZC0tvAKpjA
(I don't usually buy ebooks off Fable but I also get a credit if you use that link, for full disclosure)

I used to be an avid reader... then vet school happened. Now, I really only listen to audiobooks, but I do listen to A TON.
I found an emerging genre- litRPGs- that I've been obsessed with reading since discovering this genre around 8 years ago. I have hundreds of books still yet to read/listen to!
If anyone is interesting in getting into these kinds of books, some good starting series are:
The Wandering Inn
Ascend Online
Chaos Seed series
He Who Fights with Monsters
Dungeon Crawler Carl
Life Reset

Ha, yes I am! Chronic lurker but I try to keep up with SDN. I love my audible subscription! HWFWM is not my top audiobook but love the narration! Honestly I'm impressed with some of these amazing narrators! Especially The Wandering Inn! Andrea Parsneau is amazing!

Red Rising, Fam. Read it.
Okay I genuinely loved that book but that series went off the rails after the first one.

Um YES Saddle club and Thoroughbred books! Horse kid with no horses here as well and now my niece has inherited them from me and loves them (except my purchased collection was less complete than yours @JaynaAli and I did a lot of library reading, and she's having trouble finding them these days)

Audiobooks 100% still count as reading, because otherwise I haven't read a book for fun since like 2013...

Okay I genuinely loved that book but that series went off the rails after the first one.

I was totes fine with it until the second trilogy. Am I still going to have the complete series? Yes. But the second trilogy was disappointing

My holiday gifts from parents and grandparents were always books. And when I was in undergrad many years ago, I went on eBay and picked up the last few I was missing in order to complete the series. Got lucky!

Well, I've got two weeks until my #1 school releases their decisions, so if people want to recommend me some books to take my mind off of it I wouldn't complain!

Definitely love fiction, never really explored the new adult genre but down to do so! Not sure if I'm ready to sell my soul to high fantasy/unseelie court yet lol. I'm more of a found family/friends to lovers person than enemies/rivals to lovers. Favorite series of all time is easily Percy Jackson, and last book I read was the Simon Snow series by Rainbow Rowell. Let me know if y'all have any suggestions!! Good luck to everyone else currently in their VMCAS cycle rn <3

Ready Player One & Two. I read a series called Colony One Mars with a pretty good first book, more science-y. In the same vein, The Martian is excellent. Different than what you asked for, but The Turn of the Key by Ruth Ware, Listen for the Lie by Amy Tintera, The Only One Left by Riley Sager are all top reads for me last year.

I cannot recommend The Lunar Chronicles by Marissa Meyer enough! Seems like it may be right up your alley.

If you like more of a middle grade/YA vibe, Lockwood & Co. was a super fun read.

The Aurora Rising series was great too! Definitely more sci fi than straight fantasy. 100% has the "found family" thing!
