Totally random but how many of you were obsessed with the warrior cats series when you were young?
Ah yes. This series truly defined my life in elementary school. My childhood best friend & I would create extensive fan character lists at every opportunity & then go outside in the woods behind my house and act out cat drama more intense than the Bachelor. #ShadowClan4ever

Jan list: was reading through the zodiac academy series, but honestly needed a break after book 8.

Currently reading: returning to the TOG series after a brief break. Currently on Empire of Storms

TBR: Onyx Storm (on the waitlist), The Midnight Feast (by Lucy Foley), & The Wise Man's Fear (by Patrick Rothfuss)

I remember being on the official warrior cats FORUM lol and would roleplay as a warriorcat there 😂 I wish i could see what bat**** posts I used to write. Honestly, a TNR wouldn't be the worst thing for a medicine cat I guess 😭
ME TOO I was obsessed with creating warrior cat OCs 😭 I was over on FFN creating my own clans for people to join,,, those were the good ol' days 😌

I was a prolific Warriors fanfiction writer on fanfiction.net circa 2013 🙀 they're still making new series so every now and then I read plot summaries to see what insane cat drama they come up with. There's been some crazy plot lines in recent series (a medicine cat apprentice got TNRed)
So I just looked up the TNR situation because I was curious & the comments from fans about this situation were absolutely wild to read from inside the vet field. I never expected to see the Warrior Cats fandom imploding over the "moral issues" of spaying & neutering! 😵

Here for this!!!!

My absolute favorite book series is The Expanse by James S.A. Corey. If you like sci-fi built from real science, plus an exploration of humanity, with themes of justice, genocide, oppression, colonialism, scientific ethics, and resistance, THIS IS FOR YOU. I’m on my third read of this series now.

There’s also a very good show on Amazon Prime and it covers the first six books. Final three will probably be adapted at some point- but the show and book are solid, diverse- and has KICK-ASS female, LGBTQ+, and gender non-conforming characters. First book is “leviathan wakes.” Seriously, this series changed my life- I’d always been a fantasy person, hated sci-fi.

The book and show have both delivered some of my favorite badass characters and quotes. They’re both amazing as a pairing, slightly different. (For those in the Expanse club, OPA forever, BELTALOWDA! Lol.)

Reread The Daevabad Triology by S.A. Chakraborty (first book, City of Brass) - excellent fantasy based in middle eastern tradition and lore (versus a western locus).

Reread The Priory of the Orange Tree and A Day of Fallen Night by Samantha Shannon (!!!!) If you love Fourth Wing you will love these books! They are MASTERPIECES of modern fantasy.

Babel” by RF Kuang, amazing speculative historical fiction where Oxford houses a translation department capable of magic. Handles racism, colonialism, resistance - got a bit annoyed by the main character a lot- but perhaps that’s the point? Still amazing!

Godkiller and Sunbringer by Hannah Kaner - amazingly unique fantasy set in a world of fallen gods and the humans they use.

The Familiar by Leigh Bardugo - fun speculative historical fiction about magic during the Spanish Inquisition. absolutely breathtaking writing, akin to her other classics (Ninth House!!!! Hell Bent!!!), love story was a bit annoying (didn’t feel like it fit) but loved overall.

The Unmaking of June Farrow by Adrienne Young. Holy CRAP this novel was achingly beautiful, about loss and time travel.

The Mercy of Gods by James S.A. Corey - by the expanse author, a supremely unique, heavily science-based science fiction work. Very interesting exobiology and anyone with experience in academia will enjoy the general viewpoints of some of these characters.

Yeah I watched the infighting happen in real time and it was interesting to see both sides 😭 I actually learned from the whole thing that the UK does flank spays so yay thank you Warriors for educating me

I REALLY wanted to like The Familiar, but i just wanted as into it as Leigh Bardugo's other books. I think Six of Crows is my favorite of hers

I agree, I loved it at first but ended up disappointed as it turned into a love story- but I thought the writing was gorgeous and I loved the first 1/2 - Six of Crows!!! High on my list! Have you read Ninth House?

Yes! and Hellbent! They rank in between six of crows and the familiar. I think I was in a weird mind space when I read them and couldn't appreciate all the nuances (but they were still incredible)

I was also a huge fan of Warrior cats as a child. Currently reading some nonfiction, but my next read will probably be Demon Copperhead by Barbara Kingsolver.

January reads: The Wish by Nicholas Sparks and The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks by Rebecca Skloot.

Reviews: SEMI SPOILERS.
The Wish: I would rate it 7/10. Very predictable ending and super corny! But it was a nice read to get my mind off of things. And I love Nicholas sparks books!

The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks: I would rate 9/10! The only reason for not being 10/10 was I felt the author involved herself too much and gave major white savior vibes. Otherwise the actual story about Henrietta Lacks was incredible and amazing to read about. She sounded like a lovely person and I wish she could have known how much she gave back to society.

February reads: Unsure right now! I am currently on a no buy year because I have so much books I need to read at home. I have to decide which book from my TBR list is next.

I was on a no buy for books until I saw some of the recent book ban pushes, so I went and got a few classics! But aside from that, trying to be good and not buy any more books, though I did pick up Onyx Storm.

Love the Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks!

January reads: Heat of the Everflame (3rd book in Kindred's curse saga), A good girls guide to murder, Blood and steel (all 4 books in The Legends of Thezmarr series), Iron flame (reread), Onyx storm (twice), and Phantasma
February reads: Quicksilver (current read)
I want to read When the Moon Hatched next and start TOG this month.

Also, in the spirit of no-buy, I have some books I’m looking to get rid of- I’m going to be moving soon and I’m not moving it all with me.

Offering some free series/books for only the cost of shipping if anyone wants:

ACOTAR series - all books
London Seance Society
Lore
The Alice Network
Where the Crawdads Sing
Circe by Madeline miller
The God of Endings by Jacqueline Holland

Will have more- can ship anywhere in the US, you just Venmo me for shipping costs! Message me if you’re interested.

I have thus far miserably failed every book buying ban I've attempted. At the start of 2024, I said I wasn't going to buy any more books other than new releases in series I follow. I ended up buying over 100 throughout the year... but to be fair, almost all of it was from charity shops... I'm incapable of passing up a book I want for so cheap. I just keep telling myself "I may never see it in a charity shop again! And then I will have to buy it for $24,99 instead of $2,99!!! So I have to get it now!!!!!"

I’m a pretty dedicated Kindle Unlimited person…that way it feels like it’s free. Physical books are shelf trophies, lol. But I know not everyone enjoys reading ebooks and not all genres have a big kindle unlimited presence.

Im on a book buying ban, but there have been a few (a lot) of exceptions. Fortunately I mostly read audiobooks. Unfortunately, I am a book dragon who buys herself trophies of the books she has read

I’m very much a physical book person, but I struggle making time to go to the library. Libby has opened up a ton of options that I didn’t have before, so I’m willing to read in the iPad if it means reading more!

I’ve been good so far one month for the no buy year! My exception for new books is the library. I was able to read 7 books off my TBR list last year. I still have 25-30 books left. I AM DETERMINED TO GET IT DOWN. Then I will get kindle unlimited and use Libby with my kindle.

Lowkey the reason I decided to double major in English and bio in undergrad was to force myself to prioritize my love of reading lol

Admittedly this year I’ve just been working my way through my billionth reread of the Twilight saga (something about this rainy weather) hehe

I'm also a KU person! I have so many books and not enough space for them, that I'm trying to be better about not buying them (though that won't stop me asking for them if people want gift ideas for me). I used to very much be a physical book person, but having books available on my kindle is just so convenient.

Fam, how do I use the spoiler tags? I want to put my thoughts out there for Onyx Storm.

Omg we should totally do a book swap or blind date with a book! Instead of going out and buying books, we can send eachother books we have already read that others might not have but want to! a way we can do it is we can write our interests in this thread with a template and keep a tally of who will send who a book? Thoughts?

I LOVE THIS! I have a gazillion I’m sorting through as I get ready to move. I’d be happy to send things for free this way!

Onyx Storm 🌩️

I'm so glad that I reread Fourth Wing and Iron Flame in January cause it definitely helped me pick up on these random ways that Yarros uses to drop hints. My fave: when Xaden casually mentions Vi becoming a duchess, and then way later when Vi notices the missing gem out of the Tyrrendor dagger.

I loved that VI's ex was the crown prince and he ended up being a jerk. Cliche? Yes. Did I still love it? Absolutely. Almost all have that one person who we did or almost did date that would have been a bad choice, and I really identified with that 🤣

Now, predictions:
- Bodhi or Gerrick is the new venin
- Panchek being the rat was somewhat out of left field. What did he do to his dragon for it to not tell the Empyrean?
- Book 4 will be an easy 12-18 months out based on her statements
- Lots of politics in regards to her claim to Tyrrendor since 1) she doesn't remember and 2) there's still no heir. So even if they at some point accept her claim, there's going to be a mad rush to pair her with someone to get an heir taken care of. Probably either Halden or Aaric.

I'm determined to make this my More Reading Less Doom Scrolling year. I have started so many books in the last several years and finished exactly 0 until this weekend when I read Normal People by Sally Rooney in 1.5 sittings. Now I'm reading People We Meet on Vacation by Emily Henry (trying for some lighthearted stuff to take my mind off *points in the general direction of everything*).

Fiction books I've started and want to restart and actually finish:
The Book Thief
All The Light We Cannot See
Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow
Homegoing

Would love general recs of awesome books you've read recently to get me back into reading!

Trying to find time to start Onyx Storm, third year not allowing it currently. Was previously rereading the twilight series (my guilty pleasure.)

Wandering Stars is really fantastic. I read halfway through, but found it so moving that I've actually stopped and restarted so I can fully take it all in. I was worried that I wouldn't get everything out of it as I haven't read There, There, but I don't feel that has affected my understanding of it at all yet. My only issue with it is that I haven't been able to read all week because I've been grinding for my Macroanatomy midterm and it's killing me!!!

YESS BOOKS!! I only have time for audiobooks generally during my commutes, but still better than nothing!

January: Fourth Wing, Iron Flame, and Dune (while waiting for Onyx Storm to come out), also some parenting books that are probably less interesting
Currently: Listening to Onyx Storm, will probably head back to the rest of the Dune series afterwards.

Has anyone read house of leaves? Its been sitting on my shelf for ages im just so intimidated by it

My friends and I also have a book club!

January: We read A Novel Love Story; I usually don't love romance novels but it was a really fun read

February: We're reading "I'm Glad My Mom Died" by Jennette McCurdy. I know I'm late to reading this but so far, it's a great book. Highly recommend.

Has anyone read house of leaves? Its been sitting on my shelf for ages im just so intimidated by it
I read House of Leaves a few years ago. I wouldn't necessarily call it a difficult book; it's a bit long but I seem to recall not all the pages are actually full of text so it might look longer than it actually is. It's a bit gimmicky but I enjoyed the main story in the book.

Has anyone read house of leaves? Its been sitting on my shelf for ages im just so intimidated by it
So I haven't read it personally, but I got it as a gift for my boyfriend and he is enjoying it so far! It's a pretty interesting premise and I agree with @zenarcade it's a little gimmicky, but I've never seen a book like it before. Interesting story with puzzle-like aspects due to the clues scattered throughout the book in the weirdest places.

yes! I honestly really liked it, it’s fun to turn all around and feel super interactive with the book. sometimes it can be hard to follow along so I marked pages that had important info on it to turn back to
