If one wants to work with adolescents and adults (age 12 and up only), is it necessary to do a fellowship in C&A psychiatry or is it enough to take additional electives in 4th year and request adolescent patients for psychotherapy starting in 3rd year?

Thank you!

I've been wondering pretty much the exact same thing.

According to Mrs. Doc Samson (a C&A psychiatrist): you don't HAVE to do a C&A fellowship to treat adolescents, but you should because:

1) You won't really know what the f@#$ you're doing since "adolescents aren't just little adults"

and

2) Your legal liability is massively increased if you're treating kids and you're not a fellowship trained C&A psychiatrist. Imagine yourself under cross-examination "So, doctor, even though the APA, AACAP, and the ABPN all recommend at least 2 years of specialty fellowship training to treat someone of this age, you figured you were all set after just the standard residency?"

Really interesting points. Thanks a lot!
