This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Contratulations to all of you that got acceptances today...I would go celebrate if I were you. That's great news!

As for me, I recieved a postcard from USACOM today...application on hold.

Hope everyone is taking finals in stride.

Congrats to everyone who got accepted!
29P here, interviewed 9/20 at uab, still haven't heard anything. 🙁

question for everyone else... i'm in state, i turned in my 2ndary app to uab on the 25th of september along with my letters of rec thru virtual evals and have still not been marked as "complete." i've emailed and called numerous times but it doesn't seem to help. did anyone else experience or is experiencing this much of a delay?

I'm in the same boat as you. They sent out an e-mail a week or two ago about being behind in updating secondary applications. Everyone is supposed to be updated by December 18th and if you are not call or e-mail the office then. E-mails or phone calls only hinder them from updating secondary applications. (according to the e-mail)

care to share yall's stats so we can see what they are accepting at this point in the cycle?

30S instate 3.5 top 20 univ
little research
a lot of comm service/leadership

Good luck to everyone!

Congratulations to everyone that got accepted! Meanwhile, I am having trouble being patient with this process. I interviewed on 10/4 and have heard nothing. I got a 32 on the MCAT. I just finished my MPH with a 3.9. What else could I possibly do to appease these people?? Granted, my undergrad GPA was low. It was about 3.4 with the science GPA closer to 3.1. But it seems as though almost everyone that gets accepted has lots of research experience. I barely have any at all and expressed no interest in it. I want to be a doctor. Like a clinician. Not a scientist. So sue me!! I mean, I was a nursing assistant for 5 years! I put in thousands of hours on the floor actually taking care of patients! It seems like they want robots, not doctors. Maybe I'm wrong. Am I just losing my mind over-analyzing the situation?? Sorry guys. I just needed to vent for a minute...

Congratulations to everyone who got accepted and to everyone else like me, just keep hanging in there 🙂 . We will hear soon enough and if we don't somehow learn soon, we'll hear something in March.

I think I'm going crazy! And I feel pretty helpless...how to cope?

don't fret man, no point in stressing out now; its all a waiting game. i've found that if u drink more and sleep more you won't think about these things as much... but being with family and everyone asking me how medical school is going is def stressing me out.

I'm in the same boat as u, interview at uab 10/11 and still nothing... interviewing at south on 1/9.... hopefully that goes better 🙂

merry Christmas all!

I'm gonna need you all who are freaking out to absolutely chill...I've had my application in since August and haven't heard a thing! I did check on my application status and it is complete, but I think the ad coms used it as TP when they ran out.

Oh, and Merry Christmas to everyone!

here something interesting,

i haven't been on the status page in a while so this morning i went on to see if anything's different.... so it appears that i can pay my deposit ($50) for the entering class ... they have to accept me if they take my money, right? lol 😎

same thing's there for me. i bet they just put it on everyone's page... haha, i'm not going to pay them any money until they accept me!

Mine says the same thing. It would be pretty awkward if you paid it and they were like "Umm...you're not exactly accepted yet. Yeah...go ahead and hold off on that."

Now that it's January, do any current students have any new opinions on the new curriculum (or has anyone heard anything about what people think of it)? Has it been succesful so far, or do people not really like it?

Anyone have any UAB or USA updates? I haven't heard of anyone getting accepted to UAB in weeks, I think maybe the week before christmas?

Hey guys,

I am a current member of the UASOM Class of 2011 (aka the guinea pigs of the new curriculum!).... I was just surfing through the page like I did about a year ago this time. If you guys have any questions, please feel free to ask them. I would be glad to help in any way that I can. 🙂 We have a test this Saturday, but I will check SDN periodically! Keep your spirits up and hang in there!

Replying to abbadabba...I think that the new curriculum is fantastic. There are definitely ups and downs. Right now we are in Cardiovascular- our first organ systems modules. It is a 4 week course. We have already finished ethics (3 weeks), fundamentals I (biochem, genetics, histo, and a little physiology)- 8 weeks, fundamentals II (path, micro, immuno, and pharm)- 8 weeks, and intro to organ systems (crash course in macro anatomy) - 7 days. Except for ethics, the courses have been pretty intense. Fun I and Fun II have been really encompassing and at times random. However, the information is now being integrated into what we are learning now. We also have completed Intro to Clinical Medicine I. Now we are in Intro to Clinical Medicine II - physical exam.. which runs through the middle of our second year. Being the guinea pigs, there is alot of trial and error in this curriculum. But the BEST thing about it is that the administration is LISTENING to us. We have a town hall meeting with the deans frequently, and we voice our concerns. Within a few days, weeks, or even by the end of the module (depending on the situation), we have a response to our complaints and requests. Overall, so far so good. It will definitely be a much smoother process in the future. I think my class is going through the most bumps, because there is no precedent.

Ditto to this opinion. The only thing I'm disappointed is very little dissection. What little dissection there was was fascinating, and I feel it would have been beneficial to have more.

As far as other people liking it, there have been quite a few bumps and plenty of b!tching, but I will attribute that to med students being med students and the first few modules being a somewhat chaotic mishmash.

can you keep a secret? I think the dental and PA types still do a full anatomy course.... which would be running now. Might ask tubbs or salter if you can hang out down there and learn, without getting in the other students way......

I have been accepted to UAB and I have a question for you current medical students. I went to a small college and don't know anyone who is going to be in my class. While all the current students and other pre-meds interviewing were really nice I am still kind of freaking out about making friends. Partly because it seems like you will have so much studying going on that there is only limited free time. Mostly though, it's probably because I have never gone to school anywhere that I didn't know anyone beforehand. The experience will probably be good for me. I know i am most likely just being stupid and I am sure there are alot of other people in my situation but I was just wondering if you all had any imput on how things went socially for you.

Hey! Congrats to you... as far as the friends goes, really nothing to worry about.... MUCH of our class came in to this new situation that you asked about... while some knew people in the class, things can change... i know several people who knew people in our class before med school started but they really do not talk to them as much anymore. I knew only a few people in the class before starting, but all of my friends that I sit with, chat with, hang with, etc. are new people. While an anxiety ridden process sometimes, you really have nothing to worry about. As far as all the studying goes, it is alot, but you still have time to make friends. Also, going to class helps with the bonding. I think that our class is much closer than the other classes at UASOM. Mostly, because we actually see each other at times other than while taking the test. Congrats again 🙂

The second year class is pretty tight knit as well. There were plenty of social events planned to break the ice and help people meet each other when we first arrived, and we certainly enjoy hanging out outside of school. I'll admit, since we don't have the mandatory attendance that the first years do, there are some people in my class i've only seen a dozen or so times since anatomy ended... 🙂 But UAB in general is a friendly place, I think you'll enjoy yourself here 🙂

Thanks for the reassurance. Everyone went out of their way to be geniunely friendly at my interview so I know I shouldn't be worried about it. I guess that it is just anxiety related to a new situation and the fact that I want to succeed in school so I know I will have devote alot of time to studying. Although some of my fondest memories from my undergrad years were times that I spent studying with people so I guess that can be a bonding experience also.

When are interviews wrapping up this year for UAB?

If someone is interviewing late in the cycle, say February, what are their realistic chances at getting in?

Well it's thursday. Maybe UAB will send out acceptances. Its been a long time since I have heard of anyone getting in. I think since before Christmas. Anyone hear anything?

Yeah I am pretty sure the last acceptance was December 12th. It is almost 5pm now so unless someone hasn't posted it, it looks like they haven't released anything.

haven't heard of anyone getting in since before christmas either; are they (UAB) still interviewing/ accepting ppl? also anything about USA anyone?

I interviewed this month and I know there is today for sure and another next thursday so I'm assuming that they will tell some more people next when january is over. or at least I'm hoping.

UAB has said they will release "final decisions" in March sometime. That should include rejections, acceptances and a 60 persion, 3 tiered waitlist and you will know which tier you are in.

So it seems that things are wrapping up at UAB for this application cycle.. good luck to all of you who are still waiting and who still have interviews! Wish you the best.

I wanted to know if any of you were interested in or were planning to apply the rural program at UAB?

Do you know exactly when they finish interviewing?

has anyone heard anything from south lately?

vmp200,

Per uab guidelines for 2008 application cycle, interviews most thurs. thru mid march. Final decisions made by April 1. However, I have friends who applied last who said the final decisions came around middle of march. So who knows?

Good luck! Hopefully you will hear something soon.

Anyone have any UAB news? Or is this another Thursday with nothing? We haven't heard anything since December 12th, so I am thinking either UAB hasn't accepted many people or people who are accepted are probably not on SDN.

I hope so too, I used to live only 40 miles away from school before we moved to VA. I would love to go to school there, but being OOS applicant and a bit late with secondary makes it tough.

Thursday again, I didn't hear anything, anyone else get some news? There has been no acceptance posts on here since December 12th still. Any ideas as to if this is because they haven't accepted anyone since then, or are the people who have got accepted just not on SDN?

Yeah, I was wondering the same thing! I figure that if there were acceptances given today, at least ONE might be on SDN. So I'm guessing there weren't any?... :so frustrating:

So who else is excited about Spring Football, besides me. We got the number one recruiting class in the country, according to Rivals.Com. The Old Ball Coach is earning his money. We had 92,000 fans for the Spring game last year, and we should top 100,000 this year for the Spring Game, given the direction things are going with the Old Ball Coach (and I don't mean that Old Ball Coach up North). Best wide receiver in the country, who wanted his mom to watch him play, so he stayed home. Love it. Sweet. I am going to go whistle Dixie. Fire up the barbecues and get ready for football!

I can say I didn't get an acceptance today. Bummer. I feel I am aging one year for every-week that passes.

DoctorPardi doesnt know how to ride a bicycle. It is sad!

If this is a joke, it's in incredibly bad taste.

Why? Aren't you a fan of the Old Ball Coach? By the way, Spurrier is no longer the Old Ball Coach. Nick has assumed the title. Sure, Nick has his detractors but nobody can deny, he is a mother of a recruiter. This medical school stuff gets tedious, so focus on what really is fun and important, focus on what unites us all, football!

I'll hand it to you. You know how to distill all sorts of southern stereotypes into something that resembles absolutely nobody. Congratulations!

You bored or something?

For those of you already in med school/accepted:

How long til all the financial aid events begin rolling? I completed my FAFSA weeks ago and still have not heard of anything.

To all of you that are waiting to get accepted, don't stress too bad. I waited all last year (upper third of the waitlist) and didn't get in. Good luck to you all.

Anybody hear anything from UAB today?

If we are accepted later than everybody else, what implications does that have for our financial aid situation?

Let me remind all of you to hurry up and wait.

Yeah your probably right I mean no one in alabama likes grilling out or watching football.

Think we'll get any word from UAB or South this week?

I'm more frustrated than ever, I can't make plans for next year until I know something. What to do?
