Alternate here too - no rank (MD/MPH Applicant)

Yes - med students can put in for parking passes (but they aren't guaranteed one) or buy them daily (much more expensive but either way it's way expensive). My understanding is that they have separate lotteries for carpools.

Hi. Does anyone know what the current stand is on the MD/PhD acceptances? I interviewed back in Nov. and was placed in the hold pool in Dec. Since then no word. I see that the waitlist was supposedly ranked but still have received no word. So, I e-mailed the new director of the program and got the response that they decided not to participate in the NIH/Oxford program.... Does anyone know if that just mean they will not be a MSTP or does that mean they are not accepting MD/PhD students at all? And if they don't, do I still get put on the alternate list? Hope that made sense. Any info is appreciated

OK, I just found out the answer to my previous question. For anyone that cares: OHSU is just not participating in the NIH/Oxford program which is apparently something different than what I had interpreted it to be. They are still NIH funded. I also found out I was placed on the alternate list after talking to someone in the admissions office but they couldn't tell me my rank.... supposedly a letter is en route. Does anyone know if there is a website to check the current standing of the alternate list? Thanks.

just to let you guys know, i just got my letter from ohsu. i am on the alternate list and ranked in the low 20s.

but i'm actually going to withdraw from oregon. i will be staying in ca! =)

and here is the website to check your ranking on the alternate list according to the letter and the ranking list will be online mid-june: www.ohsu.edu/ohsuedu/academic/som/MD/admissions.cfm

hopefully that will shorten the list a little bit for other students! good luck everyone!!!!!

just got a letter from OHSU saying i'm on the alternate list (in the mid-140's). damn. basically, this a soft rejection. guess those interviews didn't go as well as i thought.🙁

it's all good though because I'm heading to Michigan!

Best of luck to all you folks waiting to hear. :luck:

Thank you, kaliphornia... hopefully many others will withdraw also 🙂

Yes, thanks for your reply kaliphornia and congratulations! In my estimation, that just moved me up one spot (I'm in the early 60s). I really hope I get in here as I love Portland. Good luck to all the other alternates as well!

how are ppl on the alternate list notified of acceptances? snail mail?

i got an email that i was on hold but so far no letter to prove it...i've had letters get lost before...i wonder if that is the case or if they didn't bother to send me a letter 😕

When I called and asked, they said either way, everyone in the hold pool will get some sort of letter--stating either rejection, acceptance, or waitlist (with rank #). They said letters were mailed on 5/12--mine was dated 5/12 to confirm. Maybe give it a few more days?

The letter I received, dated May 12th, says that "if a placement can be offered to you, we will contact you immediately." The form they have you return to them asks for your current phone number, email, and home address. I would assume that for the sake of expediency, they will be calling or emailing.

They also provide a link to the website where updates on the alternate list will be made (starting in mid-June). That link is: http://www.ohsu.edu/ohsuedu/academic/som/MD/admissions.cfm. I checked earlier today just to be obsessive and nothing is on there yet. Is it mid-June already?

OHSU does the snail mail thing until I believe mid-July, where they start with the phone calls. My letter came June 6th last year.

I am applying md/mph, and found out my rank on the md list (<15!!!) But that doesn't matter, because Dr. Stull doesn't rank the alternate mph candidates. There's only 6 spots or so, and I gotta think that the people who were originally accepted are gung ho, and a spot won't really open up. Sucks!

don't be so sure...there might be a little somethin somethin floating your way sooon...

I will be withdrawing my acceptance from OHSU today. I got into a UC, and it just doesn't make sense to pay OOS tuition at OHSU. Its a great school and Portland/Oregon are amazing! Hope someone from this list gets my spot!

so i just called ohsu...apparently my letter was lost and i am currently still on hold..not on any alternate list. i have never gotten any letter from them.. they still haven't made any decision on me. i wonder what that means? 😕

So I got my unranked alternate list notice from OHSU last week (MD/PhD), but I also got a call from the director of the program telling me that I'm very high on the list and that he is "optimistic" about my chances.

So now I'm going absolutely insane waiting to hear from OHSU. Sigh.

Here's to hoping guys!

Just sent my letter of withdrawal today. Hope one of you enjoys my seat =)

It has begun. As of today, the website shows that they have accepted through #19 on the alternate list. I'm sure many of you are already quite aware of this fact. Let the nail biting begin! :scared:

withdrew my acceptance, g'luck to those waiting! :luck:

Were you MD/MPH???

Okay, I've checked the website about 400 times daily now and it's still holding strong at #19. Does anyone know how this mysterious process works? Do they update the list each time they accept someone or do they update the list at specific intervals (like weekly, etc.)?

Also, when they say that they've accepted through #19, does that mean that they've sent acceptance letters out to #'s 1-19 and are still waiting to hear back? I assume this is why it may take some time. And just because they've accepted though #19 doesn't mean that all 19 slots have been filled, right? Argh, I wish I had paid more attention during this admissions speech at my interview!

So how is everyone else biding their time?!?!

I was told (by Lorrie Toner) last week that it gets updated as soon as there's any movement on the waitlist.

Well, ask and you shall receive! The website has been updated. They are now at #26.

Just to relieve some anxiety, they only update it once a day, if there's been movement. So it's okay to check once, and then feel okay about not being near the computer an hour later. 🙂

I won't be applying to medical school for a couple of years, but OHSU is currently one of my top choices. I'm an Oregon resident. Will this help me at all when I apply to OHSU? I know that some schools favor in-state applicants more than others do. What about OHSU?

Being IS will help you get the initial interview at OHSU, without a doubt. However, your residency is not considered post-interview. Everyone who interviews at OHSU is on equal footing at that point and residency (and gpa, to a certain extent) become almost irrelevant. The interview at OHSU has a lot more weight than at other schools.

Is that how it works for most state schools? Or do some schools give preference to in-state applicants even post-interview?

I disagree. According to AMCAS, in 2007 only 8.9% of applications (~389) to OHSU were Oregon residents, but those applicants constituted a whopping 68.6% of matriculants (~81).

http://www.aamc.org/data/facts/2007/2007school.htm

Another site has these statistics (http://www.medschoolready.com/app/schooldetails.asp?ID=124&DH=11):

(Instate / Out-state)
For interview invitation: 1 in 2.0 / 1 in 14.5
Applicants accepted: 1 in 4.1 / 1 in 99.9
Interviewees accepted: 1 in 2.1 / 1 in 6.9

I know they claim that it doesn't make much of a difference, but I'd say being an OR resident puts you in a whole other league...

Lshapely is actually correct. State of residence is no longer a consideration for the ADCOM here post-interview. So is pretty much all your numerical stuff. The interview is big, big here. Being IS will give you a much better chance of garnering an interview, however.

The numbers are inflated by Oregon's small population and applicant pool. Only 65% of our class is in-state, which really isn't that high for being the only medical school in Oregon.

Yes, but it is high considering that only 9% of the applications come from OR residents. If state of residence is irrelevant post-interview, that means that roughly 75-88% of IS applicants are given interviews (assuming 420-500 interviews per season and the AMCAS stats for 2007).

So, OP, at least it's good to know that you stand a better chance of getting your foot in the door.

Apparently, I have made myself the official OHSU alternate list scorekeeper. We are now at #31 and counting! Come on big money, no whammies, no whammies...

Also, it seems to me that there aren't a huge number of people in this thread this year waiting to hear results. I can't decide if that's good or bad...

Lastly, are there any post-meds or current-meds (or maybe even pre-meds) out there who would recommend some reading material before starting med school? I've heard a lot of people say not to read up on anatomy since you'll be doing enough of that during first year. How about any helpful literature on what to expect during the medical school years and beyond? I've already found a couple of blogs that offer pretty different perspectives of life in the trenches. Or hell even movies.

If you are going to Oregon, then just read "The River Why" by David James Duncan. Then buy yourself a 7 weight fly rod and drive up the Columbia George in September and when you get to the point where the Deschutes River pours into the Columbia, turn right, park your car, wade in the river and try to catch a steelhead. Fish late, just when the sun is going down, and keep your fly dancing on the surface of the water.

DO NOT pre-study. Anything you teach yourself you'll surpass in the first week of class, and if you study during the summer you'll just get run down faster in the fall. Channel the excitement into some fun reading.

Last summer I had a shoulder surgery (my 2nd) and spent a good amount of time on the couch recovering so I spent a buttload of time reading. Some of the books I read which I liked (ranked in a vague order)

-Complications and Better by Atul Gawande M.D. (helluva writer)
-Hot Lights, Cold Steel by Michael J. Collins M.D.
-Final Exam by Pauline Chen M.D.
-When The Air Hits Your Brain by Frank Vertosick Jr. M.D.
-Just Here Trying to Save a Few Lives by Pamela Grim M.D.
-A Life In Medicine (an anthology)
-On Doctoring (an anthology)

A lot of people recommend House of God, but after reading it, I think its a book you really can't fully appreciate until you've been in medical school a while. The negatives tend to stick out more as a pre-med/MS0, instead of the dark humor.

Wow...they're on #31 already! Moving right along. Does this seem to be going faster than previous years?

Haha well I didn't make an excel graph plotting the progress of the list last summer but it seems about right. Our started to slow down around 60 (I think it was stuck on 64 for 2 weeks) then crept along to 80-something.

So we've now gone from #31 to a whopping...#32, for a total movement of one measly space in a week. Boo to the list! Boo I say!

yes..super boo! only i'm still not on any waitlist. i am actually still on hold. hum....

Sigh. Well, the list moved to #35 today. It seems to be moving very slowly, which is very worrisome to me. A student somewhat involved with the admissions process at OHSU mentioned that he didn't think there would be a whole lot of waitlist movement this time around, since the class size had been cut from 120 to 115. That didn't make a whole lot of sense to me, but it does seem to be very sluggish. And I've read somewhere that more people apply to schools when the economy goes sour.

Looking back at old threads, I see a trend to lower and lower numbers on the alternate list. Last year was around #76, I think. As someone in the early 60s I'm really starting to freak out at this point. Someone slap me or shake me! :scared:

I talked to one of the deans today, and he verified that the list has been moving more slowly than usual this year. Although if it makes anyone feel better, he did attribute it to people "dragging their feet" with making decisions as opposed to an overwhelming number of initial acceptances.

Just passing on the second-hand knowledge!
🙂

Whew! Thanks for that positive second-hand knowledge. I rationally know that there is a good chance that I won't get in, but there is always the hope. It just sucks having to wait day after day and seeing the same number again and again when I refresh my computer screen. It makes it tough to focus on important things, like keeping my job in case it doesn't work out this year.

And to answer your questions from another thread, I know that Craigslist for Portland has a lot of people looking for roommates, housing, etc. I would offer you a place to stay myself since we have a second bedroom, but we have two cats. I'm not sure how they would react to ferrets and vice versa?

Wow, natureboy, your statement turned out to be exactly right. Late this afternoon, the website was updated to show that #36 had been accepted. What a slow, agonizing trickle! Who knows, next week it could pick up and carry on right past your number. Good luck in any case!

Ladies and gentleman, we have reached #44. We are finally out of the 30s! So says your faithful scorekeeper, so that other obsessive pre-meds generations from now can look at these writings and obsess over how their cycle compared to this one.

This next week or so should represent the biggest jumps, I think. I just received my finaid packet yesterday, so all of the people who were holding out to see what the packet would contain are likely making their decisions now. FYI, the packet is all loans because scholarships/grants are awarded in October, but it looks like people were hoping against hope anyway! Good luck to everyone who is waiting.

For those of you in the know, when does orientation start for OHSU? When do classes start? Will OHSU continue to take students off the waitlist until the first day of orientation or do they do that throughout orientation week?
