Hey guys I need some advice. I have already been accepted into my state school, UMDNJ. I also interviewed at University of Illinois at Chicago and Temple. I haven't heard back from them yet. However I just received an interview for NYU today which is awesome. But my initial deposit of $1,500 for UMNDJ is due by December 31st. Do you guys think it is ever worth it to go to the NYU interview? I kind of what to check it out since it is NYU. But I really want to know if they provide a better quality education than a state school or even other schools? Also would going to NYU give me a better chance to specialize if I decide to go into that direction?

any input is appreciated

Don't go. Or go if you just want to visit. But the tuition + cost of living is so high at NYU, you'd be crazy to turn down low tuition at your state school. The education isn't going to be 5X better even though you're paying that much more in tuition.

Do you honestly see yourself going there? That's the question you have to ask yourself if you decide to go.

Attend the interview if you feel like you'd matriculate at NYU over UMDNJ otherwise don't. It's really that easy 🙂

Attend the interview, you live so close it's a no brainer. That way you'll get a chance to actually see the school and ask questions. It's not as if going will obligate you to anything, so you've really got nothing to lose. Besides, this will also make it so later on you don't feel any regrets or "what ifs" at not going.

I envy your position, with an acceptance in hand and living so close, you actually have the "option"! *gets ready for the 6000 mile flights back home tomorrow* 😉

Go to the interview and ask your interviewers: What make your school stand out? Why NYU?

I always want to do that lol.

Since you can get instate at UMDNJ, I would definitely take it over NYU.

Nonetheless if you want to check out NYU, I see no reason not to? Since you live in UMDNJ, the traveling expenses going from NJ ~> NYC is pretty much nil compared to flying from NJ ~> Cali 😀

Edit: Sorry typo LOL

Go to the interview. It's close by and low pressure since you already have an acceptance. See if the school and Midtown Manhattan are places you'd like to go to dental school.

Is it Jan.20 by any chance?

I am going to go just to check it out regardless of whether I have an acceptance or not. You are so close to the school. There is nothing wrong with just checking out the school 😉

Congrats on UMDNJ acceptance by the way. You're already biased towards going to your state school and true it makes a lot more sense that you attend there lol. But hey just go and enjoy the day @ NYU.

I am not sure I am going to schedule the interview tomorrow.. and thanks!

You guys definitely convinced me to go to the interview and check out NYU. Honestly I would love to go to dental school in New York. Or at least the idea of it at this point. However is NYU's program that superior to other dental schools? I have been doing research and have been getting mixed results. Some say it doesn't matter where you go to school, some say a more prestigious school gives you a better chance at specializing. I am not sure if I even want to specialize yet, but don't want to leave it out of the equation. Right now my first priority is to get into a dental school that will best help me become a great dentist.

Anyone have any info about that?

A lot of people will tell you that schools like Temple and NYU will give you one of the best clinical educations in the country. You will definitely see a lot there. Just wait until you see the clinics: packed!

You should check it out. Honestly, NYU is not a bad school. It's just that huge price tag (huge factor IMO) that makes people turn down their school. What do you expect though. Everything in NYC is 10x expensive anywhere else lol.

NYU doesnt cost that much if you plan on commuting. However if you are an NJ resident offcourse UMDNJ is great. Based on what i know though if you want to specialize if you (considering you pick umdnj) and another kid from NYU were applying to speciality program, he (NYU) would be given the preference. you have nothing to lose by checking out NYU....in my opinion, NYU is a much nicer school than UMDNJ...facilities wise and everything. even my interviewer said that all the good teachers at umdnj were brought by NYU cause they are the "yankees"..........i would pick umdnj only for cost factor.....but then again i dont want to specialize

I just registered for the interview. Its on Jan 20th. see you there!

Glad you decided to go, and good luck. I just got home from NYC, ready to collapse, Hawaii has its perks, but the remoteness is a double-edged sword.

Make sure you have a vacation or two down here once you're able, that's my advice. 🙂

NYU has more patients come in than Newark, obviously, but do keep in mind that NYU has such a gigantic student population that it might not necessarily translate to more patients for you. Patient pool in Newark is awesome. I did Gateway and got to see some really insane stuff and the students seemed very blase about it, like it was par for the course and not some rare case that everyone was fighting to get.

Glad you're going to the interview, though. You paid money to apply and if the only cost to go to the interview is the bridge/tunnel fee there's no reason for you not to enjoy the breakfast pastries and lunch you've earned. I'm a Jersey gal myself but go to school 1500 miles away and was kind of kicking myself after the fact for shelling out $400 to fly back for the interview. Breakfast pastry spread wasn't even that expansive.

Ugh thats heartbreaking news. The idea of a expansive breakfast pastry spread pushed me over the fence to go to the interview 🙁.

NYU is a nice school but its not worth its price tag vs. UMDNJ which is probably on the same level. Enjoy your interview and see if you like it, but I wouldnt change my mind all of a sudden because you've seen a prettier building or neighborhood.

I was in similar, close to nyc but it really turns out to be an 80 minute commute each way. i turned down the interview and am paying umdnj. couldn't realistically see myself commuting close to three hours a day or being in that much debt.

I'm in the same situation, I could commute. But I'm not sure that's a good idea with a D1 workload.
