I honestly think I'm going insane. Here's the deal. I'm still a junior but I'm applying to schools in november (early bird gets the worm) and I have a conundrum. My parents work at UVM in Vermont. It is a good school, it ranks about 80 on USNWR. Since they work there I would not have to pay a dime in tuition. I would still need to pay for books, fees, and R&B. Also my parents could help me with tutoring and stuff.

But here's the deal; in some ways I would rather do this on my own. I'm thinking about applying to LSU, ASU, U of A, UF, and some other schools as well as UVM. LSU is my top choice currently. My parents seem somewhat disappointed at my consideration of other schools. Basically they will only pay a tiny amount (maybe just the R&B) at any school that's not UVM.

Yet, I still have this drive. I don't know what it is. Maybe I feel that I need to prove that I'm independent. I've spent my whole life dependent on others. Maybe I just want to get away and start fresh. I know it's psychological but I just can't pinpoint it. I'm probably the stupidest person in the world. I want to go to a different school even though I would have to take out loans and go into debt and probably get a part time/summer job.

Personally I'd take a tuition free school with knowing I would be able to get help from my parents over others that aren't + are in other states, any day.

But hey, I guess for some it ain't all about the $$ 😛

srs tho, take the free tuition 😉

If you really want to go your own way, you should go. Start looking up full scholarships. Washington University in St. Louis is a great place to start. They give out a couple dozen (or so) a year, and lots of partial ones. It's also an amazing school. If you work at it, you could have a shot. University of Alabama = full scholarships based on pretty much nothing but test scores/GPA. Great school, great honors college.

There are tons of ways you can do your own thing. Try all of them, and then when May 1 rolls around, and you have to make your final decision, weigh your options. Maybe in the end UVM will be the best option, but at least at the end of the whole process you'll know it was all you. Good luck!

P.S - keep in mind that not having to worry about money during college will probably make you a bit stronger as a student. This is the only reason I'm suggesting these schools that give out a considerable chunk of money. In the end, you want to apply to medical school (right?) so you'll need a nice GPA that doesn't need to be sullied by money worries. These things are complicated though, but my basic advice is to open all the doors you can, write great applications, and then consider carefully when the time comes

If I were you, I would take the free tuition! It's not a bad school. And you won't have to worry about money when you're studying.

Apply to othe schools seeking full scholarships. If you get one then great if not then PLEASE take the free tuition! The cheaper you can get out of undergrad the better. Med school is going to be expensive. Debt accumulates quickly and then snowballs before you are earning enough income to make a dent. Again, if you can go somewhere for free DO IT!!

Have you been to the campus talked with students?

I have been to several schools and from state to state undergrad is fairly similar. Whichever school you choose, just make sure they have a degree program you actually care about. That should be fairly easy to find if you are pre-med.

Take SurvivorDO's advice and apply to the schools you are interested in and then apply for every scholarship you can find. If you get a full ride at any of the schools you like than go for it. Otherwise, go to the free school for four years. In the grand scheme, four years is a short amount of time and the money you save now will make a big difference later.

First off let me say congratulations for trying to prove that you can do it on your own! I think that's really cool and mature 😎

I can't offer the best insight as I've never been in a similar situation like this before. But here's my take:

First off, Take your parents out of the equation and remember that this is your decision. While they will have to accept it, YOU will be the one who has to live it.

Still apply to those schools. You would never want to look back and say "what if"

Think about what and who you're trying to prove this to.

And finally, and most importantly, choose what's best for you! Don't worry about impressing others or disappointing others, because at the end of the road, you are the one that traveled it.

Just my 2 cents. Hope this helps 🙂

Just take the free tuition. You can use the money you save towards medical school.

I think getting away is a great idea but in practice, it is very difficult. Going very far from your home is difficult to say the least with travel and flight. Having some family support is great.

I would go to UVM. Being close to family is awesome while you are studying.

I think I will choose UVM as my prime target, with LSU as a close second choice.
