Hey guys,

I've been on SDN for a few months now, and one thing that hasn't changed is the amount of MD vs. DO threads out there. Even though the webmasters for this site have said that they are not tolerated, they still exist in many shapes and forms and tend to get nasty, personal, and serve as a way for people to insult each other and not help, which is ultimately the point of these forums.

I came across this link from the U.S. Department of Labor. I hope all of you will read it and realize that the rumors are true, M.D.'s and D.O.'s are equal and they're the only two degrees that allow you to practice medicine and surgery in this country. This is obvious to a lot of us, I know, but being a 22 year old future medical student, it's an issue that pre-meds starting out are still unaware of.

Shocking. Wow, these thread will finally go away.
ROTFLMAO!
This guy has "been on SDN for a few months now" with a join date of 3-13-2005 and "one thing that hasn't changed is the amount of MD vs. DO threads out there." Really, the whole 52 days and nothing has changed. Where is this forum headed? What will it be like next week, or next month? We'll all have to wait and find out.
I know he is only trying to help, but man, talk about being a newb.

Yes, I'm a "newb", but it's telling that I've only been on for 52 days (glad you counted) and I think the amount of these kinds of threads is overwhelming and pretty tiring...that's all

Amen Vivek311r...and this crap really only seems to fester in here in SDN world (and amongst old crotchedy DO's and a few MD's). It ain't worth worrying about!

In the words of the immortal R. King.

"Can't we all just, get along?"

lol.... So how long 'ya gotta be a member before you are considered "legit"? 6 months? A year?

Is there some secret handshake or hazing ritual you must go through?

"Thank you Sir may I have another!"

Vivek311r,
Just wanted to let you know that there will always be people and usually premeds who will want to have the "MD vs DO" threads. It is in the nature of people to want to bash those that are not like them. So there will be some MD's who think DO's are inferior. This is something that is not going to change. Do you think that just because slavery is no longer legal in this country there are not still racists. Its sad but there are. People will continually want to put themselves above others. This has been going on since the beginning of time and will continue. But, in saying this, you must understand that people will see you for who you are as a physician and how you provide care. As you go through the medical education process you will find that being yourself in administering care is the single most important thing that will affect how your colleagues and your patients see you. If you work hard at learning to be a good doc, get a good education, and show empathy and compassion, you will have colleagues that see this and admire it (Both DO and MD) and you will have patients knocking your door down to get an appointment. If you suck at being a doc, well you get the picture. This is true for MD or DO. So when you see this type of thread, read it, laugh, and move on or you can offer some words of encouragement to an up and coming premed. Then, let the premeds continue to beat it to death. Always remember that being a physician is based on effort, hard work, and application not the letters after your name.
Hope that helps you increase you self confidence and good luck in Med School!!!

I have to disagree. I hate how DO have to always defend themselves or jump at the oppurtunity to defend themselves, but Premed are asking to find out if it safe to go to a DO school not to bash them. Everybody here researched DO schools before applying, no different. I just feel the only ans. to this question is look at the match list.

Anyone ever seen statistics about first choice matches from DO vs. MD programs? I'm very interested in DO schools but the thought (myth?) that it can (slightly?) affect your chances at competitive residencies would be the only thing to stop me.

I know there are a thousand threads covering this topic, bashing DOs and extolling the virtues of them, but can anyone point to any sort of statistics? I know that ultimately, a good physician will get matched with a good residency regardless of their med school.

Thanks

There goes the hopeful end to DO vs. MD. 🙄 This just isn't as cool as Alien vs. Predator IMO.

You got me wrong, I don't hope to instigate more controversy. I'm just wondering if anyone has any real data about the sucess rates of DO vs. MD graduates getting into top residencies. Oh well...

Define "top residency."

I'd be interested to see a ranking list for residencies, since I've never heard of one.

I would like to see a dramatic increase in the number and caliber of vituperative and recriminating DO vs MD threads.

They are fantastic.

Dude, surely you know the gist of what the he meant by "top residency"... why do you have to belittle a good and perfectly legit question? Im sure everyone going into a certain specialty can name what are known to be some of the "top residency" programs in each of our specialties. Im sure you know some of the programs that are considered to be "top" programs in ER. I can tell you what are top programs in anesthesia, etc, etc.

You dont have be be annoying and say crap like "well there are no lists ranking each residency program".... yeah there may be not, but we all have a gist of what are considered "top" programs in each of our specialties.

dude, you should check out the match lists for the different DO and MD schools and decide for yourself. I think if you see the match lists you will know the answer. Follow the links below to see match lists...

I believe the poster I was replying to was asking for "real data."

I was stating the fact that there is none.

(As you would agree.)
