Peds cardiac anesthesiologist uses wife's free transit card and gets his license suspended for 6 months. The British equivalent of the medical board said he behavior was undermining the public's trust in the profession.

I was about to say well they don’t pay NHS docs much over there but he lives in a $2mil house so this is just plain stupid. Stupid even if he was a broke resident.
All because of trying to save $300 over six months? How stingy can you be? And this is coming from a cheap person like me!!

Im not sure that all of the resources, time, and energy justify a suspension for something like this. Make him pay a fine and allow patients to remain receiving care.

Nah. Pediatric cardiac anesthesiologists are a dime a dozen. Easy to to replace in a heart beat.

The NHS and British government clearly don’t care about physician shortages. Just cue the line.

Very American Way to look at things. We are talking about a different country here with different rules but somehow Americans are gonna criticize. Their country their ruling.
That's not what we would do in Amurrca!! Doctors get special treatment here!!
Y'all are funny.

1. It is likely that 95% of the people who come to this board are US based or have ties here. So an American perspective is what you should expect.
2. It is doubtful that in the best interest of the community to sideline a pediatric cardiac anesthesiologist for six months for this infraction.
3. It does seem a disproportionate punishment.

I guess I should check my bias at the door. Seems to be counterproductive to penalize licensure due to something seemingly so minimal in nature. Maybe physicians in the US are more privileged. But, if I could lose my license so quickly then I’m not sure I’d have committed 9 years to medical education.

The British are great at standing in queue...

But I'm actually not surprised at all. The NHS doesn't care about patient wait and backlog of surgical cases. Fewer cases means less expense. Just talk to anyone who has worked in the NHS before. Horribly inefficient coupled by severe understaffing and a terrible training model designed to create the equivalent of perpetual residents

Hold up I am guilty of fare evasion too... It's a little challenge for me basically lol. I remember when we were in Rome we paid once for the light rail and then realized no one actually checks the tickets, so free transport 😉 I mean yes I can afford it...

That being said, wow that's an extreme punishment for this poor chap

Any other profession or job, nothing happens except for the fine. So hypocritical of society. As if being a physician has to dictate every aspect of your life. Especially disappointing given all the mistrust and hatred towards healthcare workers with all the mask and vaccine stuff with Covid.

Bull****.

If he was any other profession than a physician nobody is suspending him from his job. Heck if he was an MP nothing would have happened to him.

“Others labelled it as 'pathetic', 'appalling', and 'a travesty', with some noting that as Dr Ip cannot work while suspended it was equivalent to issuing him a £50,000 fine. ”

Anyone else surprised by this? Consultant peds cardiac anesthesiologist gets about $10k/month. That’s the same as a 22yo new grad RNs at our hospital who get $60/hr. Hopefully he has a lucrative private side gig.

Thousands of tech bros at Burning Man vs a pediatrician at Burning Man. What do they think happens at Burning Man?

Sure, maybe you and others have a point. Maybe the government there is trying to make a point. But when it comes to other countries and how they punish their crimes I don’t judge unless we are taking human rights violations. Which we have in the US as well and I judge it too.
I am looking at it strictly from that point. If that’s BS then whatever but Americans are very well know to judge the World based on what happens here.

Nope. The world knows thad US physicians get paid well and often the most but they also know of our inflated school loans and Capitalism that runs healthcare.
I would equate working for the NHS to working for the US military.

That's fair, but it's certainly reasonable for us to look at this kind of silliness and laugh and raise an eyebrow - same as it's OK for Europeans to look at what we do and laugh (or judge) also.

They’re not paid that badly. Income and workload came up at a dinner I attended a couple of years ago with an NHS anesthesiologist. It actually didn’t seem terrible. He had later starts, early days, and lots of time off. Also had a side job about 1 day a week in his down time.

No wonder you guys can't keep nurses. Our nurses won't stay for 180k a year
